Not bad for your first MIDI. It's better than what I can do.
Good job!

My name is Underhill. Commit it to memory.

It's good for a first try. No doubt others who do music will comment;

Personally what I'd say is work on your timing, it sounds like a jumble of notes in some places.
This is exposed more as you are not keeping to the same Key, it makes it clash as tune, when combined with notes that appear to being played individually rather than flowing. It makes it feel a little primative.

I could be wrong but it's playing at 4/4 right? When what it needs to be given the tempo is 3/4, but then that would still clash as the tune is designed as a 4/4 hmm

:: shrugs :: well I'm no expert so really can't give much helpful advice on correcting what I felt could be improved, but it's a good start.

It's certainly a start. Can't say I've made anything better(or much at all for that matter). Just keep practicing and you'll be on your way in no time.

Just got myself a Yamaha PSR 295 recently, so I'm hoping to start my music career very soon.

I'd love to have a contest. I know EricT and Aaron held something like this awhile back. What software and tools did you use to make your composition btw?

Keep up the good work.

A book? I hate book. Book is stupid.

I used Voyetra Music Studio Kit's record producer. I just got it yesterday and ive already made about 5 compositions. I think you should make a Forum on here just for MIDI composers because it does tie in with game development in a way.. So people could go to the forums and ask for MIDI tracks to load into their games.

Sounds pretty good!

Here's a quick ditty that I wrote a few years back. MIDI is fun to work with but challenging as it's quite limited. Play this one in Windows Media Player, not WinAmp, as WinAmp doesn't play MIDI files properly.

To overcome midi challenges I record mp3s of my midis
http://www.cdpgames.com/pub_files/orchestral.mp3
Not my first musical idea, but definitely the first one I put into any form.

Have any of you guys looked into the little more advanced side of theory? I just got a nice book, Elementary Rudiments of Music by Barbara Wharram. It's a workbook, so you get the chance to apply what you learn and all that fun stuff.

There's a whole bunch of rules about composition I've never even though about, but abiding by them certainly makes your tunes sound better. I'm assuming since we're all here we're wanting to write game music, and game music typically uses classical theory.

Good idea and not bad for the first attempt. I don't know anything about the Voyetra Music Studio Kit's record producer but I hope it has a usable Quantize function that should become a very helpful tool.

@Jeku

First i'd like to note, don't take anything I say to harshly, its not meant to be taken harsh.

I gave both tracks a quick listen, I like the opening to the first midi, but it soon fell apart at about 17 seconds when the second piano track came into play. Timing errors up the ying yang . Are you using a metronome? If not, you oughta. Whats the name and brand of the midi controller your using?

The second track suffered from the timing errors instantly.. I suppose your recording each octaves part seperatly then combining them via tracks in the progam? Or are you playing it all out at one time?

Its a good start, but you have a VERY long way to go.

Edit: Sorry if nothing makes anysense that i typed, i'm a bit sick today and my brain isn't working quite right.

Sigs blow.

What did you do? did you only listen to the first 5 seconds of the track and then stopped it? It's like techno it's supposed to start off kind of lame and then add more notes and beats and get better as the track goes. I'm not trying to counter-flame or anything but I'm just saying try listening to the whole song.
Thank you for the comment though

a quick listen as in one listen through while i am eating my chicken...

Edit: I know what you mean by "like techno" but remember, techno adds items that work off the beat of the basic bass track. its like a roadway through the center of a city... you have the main street (the bass track) then the offshooting streets (the various sounds)... and they all work togehter in sync to provide a enjoyable driving (or in musics stance, listening) experience.

Well when the special olympics committee adds a Piano Composition event, you should be a headrunner for the gold.

I thought all the notes were pretty much in sync but I guess that's just me.

Let's end this debate.

Do you got any MIDI's that you made?

dc -- I like your second one better than your first one

Here's another one of mine--- it starts simple, then adds one layer at a time. I have a better version that I made in Reason, but this MIDI file is what I started with. I don't think it sounds too bad actually

EDIT:

Remember to use windows media player to hear...

I found one:

http://www.liquidzsnake.dbspot.com/untitled.mp3

This was written as a test of 3 things:

1. Sonars "groove clip" (loops, but you know how companys love to name things different then what they is) support
2. Micing my amp on my guitar (2 tracks)
3. Hooking my ol ESQ1 up to my mirage, and using a sample from one of them old floppys, and going straight into my motu.

It ended ok... but not great.

dc, all the parts are in tempo, but it just sounds awkward in some areas. If you're wanting a little techno style in there you definitely want a strong downbeat that's obvious to the listener right off the bat.

EricT-That was pretty sexy. I love the saxophone, the overlapping thing was a little weird around the middle though, and it didn't always connect with the rhythm section. You could turn that into a rockin jazz thing.

Jeku-It was weird hearing the major arpreggios at first, but the whole tune was happy, a nice contrast to what I normally hear from techno guys.

Some of you guys have probably heard this before, but what the heck. I did it in FL Studio. If you listen it sort of follows a blues form in A.
http://www.cdpgames.com/pub_files/Rocka_du_Electronica.mp3

If any of you guys are into classical stuff, I just got the Phantom of the Opera soundtrack. Really beautiful stuff in there. The Music of the Night is particularly exquisite.

Winamp doesn't render my songs properly for some reason :-|

As long as we're showing off old songs, here's one I wrote 10 years ago in Grade 9... I was sick one day and thought I was in love with this girl, and I wrote it. It's in MOD format and WinAmp plays it just fine. I'm particularly proud of the melody in this baby.

EDIT:

Ouch--- it sounds particularly bad with headphones as there is NO BASS whatsoever. Oh well--- I still say the melody is good!

Also check this song out--- I still regard it as one of my best--- it's called Isolation and it's about 3 years old:

http://www.jeku.com/audio/jeku-isolation.mp3

Sorry if you've already heard this song before...

EDIT:

It has thunder, rain, and a nice guitar...
