The PS2 has a great design, but the Xbox is a much much better console.
Anyways, I like the design on the old Xbox more than this. It's just... Ugly...

WOW! Pretty ugly!
You've got small hands if you can't hold a Xbox controller in your hands Have you tried the smaller controllers? Or the original ones?

Ok wtf is this?

Looks like a 486 fused with an air-conditionar.

They old big xbox controllers were ok. I never used the select/start buttons so holding it was ok. People whine too much.

I prefered the old style chunky controllers - the weight and size were ideal for Halo, like aiming is easier when you have a steady controller. The best thing was the black and white button placement - on the new controllers they're sat under the A button, on the old one they were actually visible and in a great position for using the flashlight without having to look at the controller. I can see why they went for a smaller controller style, but not the stupid position of the black and white buttons. This new controller scheme is worse for Doom3 as well, that flashlight is vital damnit!, on the PC I had it mapped to the scrollwheel click-in, perfect, just like the button on the old style controller.

First or Second Generation controllers?
They started putting the X-Box Controller-S with most Boxes released in 2003-onward

I never liked either because while the size of the original was a little too big for people who didn't have ungodly sized hands, it's more the button positions that were the problem. It's like they were designed for the Sudoban. :p

Old one looks just like the DELL/Compaq (i forget which) 386s from '88 :p
Or maybe a Betamax tape deck.

The Playstation 2 looked like one of those ground floor raidiator heaters. I'm still a little sketchy about this, because those are just images from the CG Concepts... the X-Box 2 they had at Rare, looked more like a Waffle Iron, with Xenon down the side.

Why does everyone keep saying the xbox controllers are too damn big! What is their problem? The ps2 ones are just too damn small. In fact, I use the "big" mad catz one and it works just fine. My hands btw are actually smaller than most...so i just dont get it.

Yeah, the PS2 controllers are kinda small. The newest Xbox controllers (the X-Box Controller-S ones) fits perfect into my hands...
The older ones were too big...
By the way, I've read in the OXM 40 that the next-gen Xbox could support models with 30-50.000 polys. That's all I know.

i've got to say that i have an xbox and a ps but not a ps2 - the reason i switched to an xbox is because of the controller - more buttons and sticks which are used more - i also liked the triggers

by the way i use the s type controller as that was the one it came with

From what I've read on it, it supposedly is going to have 3 processors in it... Each will be able to handle a different part of the game, so we could have one processor handling AI, another the environment, and another handling everything else... I also hear they're going the ATI route this time, rather than the NVidia route.

Other rumours I've heard: All wireless functionality built in, including wireless internet.

3 different versions, a no-hard drive version, one with an 80 gig hard drive, and a PC version, basically a really simple, user friendly PC that hooks up to your TV.

I think it's going to kick arse. You can watch it in action May 12th on MTV... They have the times online somewhere, and that's not a rumour, that's a fact.

I think the big black box and the big black controllers were rather masculine, and sexy in that sense- if you were effeminate or a woman. If you're a guy you felt connected to it because of its manliness.

I have big hands, as soon as I saw my new box came with a controller S I ran out to target to grab the last beefy controllers. It kind of just rests on the curves of your fingers as if you were holding a lunch tray, and since it's so big and curvy on the sides your thumbs are in the perfect position for button-pressing and analog-tilting. I like the analog shoulder buttons too, because they were analog unlike the PS2, and they didn't click like the Gamecube.

Praise to the xcrate mondo controllers. That new design for X2 looks flaky. Who can even say it's the real deal?

I think the Playstation 2 controller is too small when you've got to perform a tonne of multi-button combinations, but generally in most games now you have your thumbs over the Analog sticks, and your fingers over the shoulder buttons.

The design feels comfortable, but not to the point where you completely forget it's there like the GameCube controller.

Despite it's crazy design, I think the Cube has the most intuative controller. The N64 did as well when I think about it...

The Cube controller's shoulder buttons click because you have Analog mode and then the click = Button mode. They can be used complete independantly of each other too.

I actually prefer the method used, because it has A LOT more give than the other controllers.

The PS2 are very very very small zones, I'd swear they only have 3 settings... Off - Half - Full, even then Half settings are a pain in the arse to do in Soul Calibre, than god the 'analog' feature wasn't used much in games.

Button-wise though the X-Box controller has the least. Your welcome to count them, but it comes up 1 short compared the the GC controller which has 3 less than the PS2 controller.

The more buttons don't make the controllers better though.
I mean honestly, in games that actually use the Black & White 'triggers' I tend not to use whatever is attached because... either i'm trying to stretch in order to reach them, which means looking down at the controller. The alternative is that i'm trying to dislocate my thumb tp reach them, which again means looking down at the controller.

As for the specs.. they're at the patent office.
But if your not going to check:

2.5GHz PowerPC 9xx 3xCore Processor
128MB DDR 2700 RAM
ATi R520 FlipChip BGA
16x DVD-HD/RAM
4 Controller Ports
2 Memory Ports
Video Out
7.5v DC/AC Power

Raven,
Yeah that's main chief gripe with the new controllers over the old chunky ones. On the old chunky ones, with the middles of your thumb on the green button, you can clearly see and access the black and white buttons - but on the new controllers with your thumb in the same position, the buttons are covered up by your thumb . The problem is that the white button is mostly used for flashlights, like in Doom3 and Halo1/2 - so it needs to be somewhere that you can get at it quickly, that's why I still use an old chunky controller for FPS games.

Personally I like the GC controller - I like how instead of having 2 or 4 shoulder buttons it has 3 - quirky but that 3rd 'mini' shoulder button is ideal for map access. The GC pad just feels like it's been engineered for serious gamers - and the way the yellow analogue is used for camera panning most of the time is great - it's not just there for the benefit of FPS games if you know what I mean.

I prefer the new design, the old one looked like a brick with black paint on it. The new one has a nice curvy look, but would be good if it had a flurescent blue version.

I have rather large hands for my height (8 1/2 inch handspan, 7 1/4 inch long) and I find the PS/2 controllers better than anything. The 64 has a good button layout, whereas the chunky X-Box controllers are chunky and horribly designed.

whenever i play a game on the xbox, i loose.
mostly because i sucks, but the reason i suck is the controller.

i hope some of my friends by the smaller version, then i can join them in their multiplayer battles with halo.

i know i said halo sucks, but after playing the multiplayer online game (as van suggested some time ago) i found the game pretty interesting. but i prefer to watch rather then playing.

any pictures of the xbox 2 controller?

What the heck are you guys talking about, that XBOX 2 looked cool! In fact, the X-box 1 looks cool! Man fanboys annoy me.

But I wonder what the new xbox is going to have, maybe something like the Cell technology of the PS3?

And we still await news of the Revolution...

Playstation 3 - BluRay (Sony did invent it though so no surprise)
Revolution - BluRay-P (Pansonic\'s version combining thier own DVD-RAM technology with Sony\'s BluRay. Result being the same 3\" Discs (yay) but just as much space as the X-Box games (approx. 23GB iirc))
X-Box - DVD-HD, I\'m actually to a loss to why Microsoft didn\'t try to make a deal with Sony over the technology. Still this is considered the \'Next-Generation\' DVD format. This is really the same as DVD-RAM vs DVD-ROM, and as we all know Panasonic lost despite having the better technology.

So we\'ll just have to wait and see who\'s made the wisest choice in which of the Next Generation Disc format\'s to use. Once again Nintendo however are sticking clear of the \'we\'ll give you multimedia center options with your console.\' route..

While this no doubt lost them business in the previous generation. DVD-Players are not cheaper than VCRs, so really I doubt people are going to migrate to these new formats as happily as they did with DVD. The take up of both CD and DVD formats has been very slow and methodical. We\'ll be looking at BluRay and DVD-HD making a difference probably in about 2-3years time really. When stuff becomes more publically available and companies start supplying for it regularly enough for the cost to come down.

It\'s why DVD in the PS2/XB were so popular. Rather than a stand-alone player that cost like £200, you could get your games console with the player for £250-300. When you thought about it, was a nice cheap solution. DVD\'s however were already on the market. This time it\'s a case of the technology comming long before the market is there. This happened with CD-Rom\'s and it took us more than 5-years to move on to the technology.

Quote: "But I wonder what the new xbox is going to have, maybe something like the Cell technology of the PS3?"

I\'ve been told a few times by Playstation fans, that the PS3 has a more powerful version of the Cell Processor that uses the same technology as the 360.

The reality is that the Revolution and X-Box 360 use the same Base-Processor. The Cell is still based on the Emotion Engine 2, which is very firmly a 128-bit Toshiba TX81 RISC Processor. It was\'t exactly surprising that after a year of hearing the X-Box 360 was going to have more than one processor, that the Cell (also developed mainly by IBM no doubt where the misconception comes from) also surprising appears to have been designed with more than 1 Processing Core.

It\'s interesting really. Rather than redeveloping the Core\'s of the PPC 9xx and TX81 to being CISC rather than RISC... what they\'ve done is created SuperScaler processing routines that rely on multiple Cores.

While it\'s claimed they can process A LOT more than your standard Desktop processor, there are some major design flaws that actually prevent this from being true.

The Share 128KB of Cache for example. Both Processors run from so little Cache it\'s just shocking!

Revolution however uses a Dual Processor (rather than Dual/Triple Core) Solution. It also runs at a much cooler speed, as well as requires much less power. While thier 2.0 GHz Dual PPC 64-Bit 950FX solution isn\'t likely to technically be able to process AS much as the other processors... it has a combined 1MB Cache on a PCI-E Bus of 2.2GHz. The end result is it is capable of pushing almost 4x more data through than the other machines.

Quite funny when companies get caught up in the raw power and forget that a systems overall speed is the ENTIRE design, not just one component. To that end the Revolution also uses a slightly slower R520 variation, that has an enhanced Shader Core.

From the rumours, the X-Box 360 has basically what\'ll be in desktop systems. R520 running at 575MHz 16MB Framebuffer via HyperMemory, 16x8 Pipelines... in essence it\'s a Radon 850 XT PE but with Shader 3.0a (::rolls eyes: access. There are still some major omits that ATI have made though, like no Virutal Displacement Mapping (aka Hardware Parallax Mapping), no hardware stencil enhancements (so Doom3 will still run crappy on it).

They\'re small niggles and don\'t affect the overall performance but still they\'re quite major omits when you compare what the NV50 has in store.

See this is where the difference is... because Nintendo took the card and integrated it directly, much like they did with the Radeon 9700 for the GameCube. The end result, well just play Resident Evil 4 on a HDTV. For the Cube\'s technical power, that game is just freaking amazing!

They\'ve also gone and added an Asyncronous Pipeline. This is important, because what Matsh*ta has been able to do was cut the R520 to 12x4 Pipelines, which runs cooler requireing less power.. but then added an Async Core, that doubled the processing capabilities of the Shader Unit.

Effectively speaking your looking at 2x 12x4 SuperScaler Pipelines. While this does mean that you can\'t link Shaders running in the two pipelines much like a Non-SuperScaler design, so you\'d need to take a second pass.. the result is that you can do two distinctly different shaders pipelines at once.

They also changed the design from 128KB Cache From Frame Buffer, to 256KB Cache From RAM.

This means rather than waiting for something to be processed, sent to the VRAM, everything is streamed. Something Microsoft have yet to realise how to do yet.

I read an article that was on the msn frontpage the other day about the next xbox, ps3 etc coming out..

It was talking about the multi-core cell system the PS3 is supposed to have, but it also said that the playstation 3 would run at 4.8ghz.

It also claimed that the fastest processor from intel at that time was the pentium 4 3.8ghz.

In any case, for a game console that's pretty amazing if they can truly get it running at those speeds.

All in all, the next game consoles should really kick a lot of ass.

Found that Ourcolony.net thing....funky. But I believe the leaks now.

Didn't the press release say Xbox 2 would have three 3ghz processors though? They love loading it up don't they? Should eliminate the need to scale down ports from PC to XB2.

Heh, not really Hawkeye. Most of this is from the Patents and several articles both companies have been putting out... that said my information on the Revolution is mostly rumour stuff.

So how reliable it is, we'll have to wait and see.
Given I've seen alot of people mistaking the rumoured specifications I've heard for the Revolution with the other two consoles quite a bit recently, I'm happy with the fact that a three consoles are going to be pretty close in processing terms.

Not sure what speed the Cell is going to be exactly... rumours fly about it being 4.x GHz, but realistically speaking Intel have the 4.2 GHz Pentium 4 HTC64 EE, which sucks up power like a dyson on speed. While having a powerful console is one thing, having it being able to replace you Central Heating as well as cost more than every other appliance in the house to run. Well it just seems kinda stupid, specially given thier introduction market.

I think it is more likely that it'll be a more realistic 2-3.0 GHz, I mean even that will require a pretty heavy duty cooling system. One thing that ticked me off about the current generation of consoles was they all had Fans. The XB and PS2 in particular were FAR from silent running... At times the GC was quite annoying when your trying to play an atmospheric game like Resident Evil just to hear 'Whirzzz' in the background. That said it had a pretty noisy (but quick) Disc Drive.

I hope that the manufacturers remember this time that we DO actually need to be able to hear that lovely 5.1/7.1 Surround rather than trying to lip-sync. :p

I always hated the PS2 DVD player, it's so cheap and nasty - the XBox player is much better, but at the end of the day - £25 buys a great standalone DVD player with audio outputs, MP3 support, and these things will play practically any format movie you throw at them. I hope Nintendo stick to their guns and concentrate on a games console - I have 4 DVD players in my room now, and that's before I even think about buying a 360 or PS3.

Is it for sure that the next Xbox is going to be called "Xbox 360"?
I heard that Microsoft was currently working on something called "Xenon". One of my friends told me, that it was going to be called "Xbox Next". There's just so many names...

Xenon is the codename for the xbox 360.

Raven - I heard that the cell technology uses some sort of system where even though it's running at blazing speeds it's also not going to get very hot.. Truthfully, i cant remember if the article i read said it wouldnt be hot, or if it wouldnt drain energy very much.. it was one of the two.

I could easily see them creating a high powered gaming console running at 4.xghz+.. I mean, the only way to be as competitive with the other game companies is going as high as you can possibly go, and maybe a bit farther..

The only way Microsoft/Sony will stay in it, (not knowing what the other machines processing capabilities are), would be to assume it'll be the highest estimate.. and then try to beat that mark.

The bad thing is, this time the Xbox 360 comes out first.. Meaning Sony will still have a small chance to make quick modifications to possibly match the Xbox 360 before releasing the Playstation 3.

Or Sony could pretend that their console is gonna be cheaper - then people will hold off buying a 360 .

Price is a big factor for me - has anyone heard any rumblings about pricing yet?

Codename 'X-Box Next' (no seriously that was the codename)
Operating System 'Xenon', this also has become the name of the developer version. Looks bloody snazzy if you ask me.
Retail name 'X-Box 360'

finally tracked down the official images of the Box, that MTV are going to be showing in the unvieling. Pretty similar to the concepts, just some subtle differences, and the number of colours matches the N64... some of them are quite snazzy.

It does look like a STB that Cable or Sky would give out heh, but still that's probably because the most expensive version comes with Windows Media Centre 2005 and is capable of being used like PC.

Emulates Win32 x86 Executables apparently, equal speed to a 2.5GHz P4 .. again just a rumour.

Sony have rebuilt the PS3 from the ground up since the X-Box 360 specifications were unofficially leaked. Doesn't mean they'll ship it with the same build quality though... We'll have to wait atleast a year before that happens. So expect more bugs in the PS3, or just as many as the PS2.

Seriously I think that Nintendo's Controllers are going to be the most interesting. I've got to see one of the prototypes, that uses Touch-pad technology. Not sure if it was a technology preview of what it 'could' have or what it 'will' have. But it was snazzy.

The buttons appear on the touch screens, even had a Mario example where you clicked a button in the corner and a Map of the area poped up you could then hide it again. Touch screen controls work very well on the Sony-Ericsson P9xx and NDS. I think while it'll probably turn off a lot of gamers are first, it is going to be a way to truely awesomely customise your games.

[edit]

Est. Prices:

X-Box 360 - £150 / £250 / £350
Playstation 3 - £300
Revolution - £250

Those are the current estimates going around right now.
Nintendo aren't going for the cheapest position, because American's (the biggest market) didn't buy them mostly down to the fact they don't trust cheap products.

The cheapest X-Box 360 is quite cut-down, mostly for solo-gamers. Who just want to play games... The mid-range one has the online capabilities, bigger hdd, etc. The most expensive is a full Multi-Media Center PC.

That sounds good. Looks like I'm going for the Xbox 360. The cheapest, and the one with Halo. Great.
