Yo,

5 Hours I have so far, just got to new ascalon. Level 6 Nec/Ele. Spent a long time in old ascalon doing quests and such. The PvP part was so freaking easy for me cause I was a level 6 with all the kick ass skills, and those poor level 3's that tried to stand in my way! Firestorm rules.

Anyway, I think this is gonna be a long night.

Eric

BTW: Who else is playing, I tell ya, if your not your missing out on some fun.

Edit: A picture of me character as of 1 minute ago:

Arrived in the mail at 9am immediately booted it up and started playing.

Got to level 4 as Mesmer, but I'm confused. They changed the creation section... the menus are better, but I miss the whole mountain-top thing. It just seemed better.

Still the menu system for everything has seriously improved. very nice stuff, and I like the whole expandable backpack thing now.
Keep running out of space though, and what's worse is no one in Old Ascalon or the Outpost want to buy anything.

(Cheapskate bastards!)

I had some very very nice powerful weapons. Considering most people were lvl4-7 you'd think they'd want something nice and powerful as well as some good shield.

That said almost everyone on the Districts I'm in speak bloody French or German. I was playing for an hour before I met anyone who could actually speak English... Think I'm going ot see if I can't move on to an American District, cause even when you do talk French/German, they still sodding ignore you.

I swear I hate playing with european players cause they're often so damn rude!

I was very interested in this game for a long time. (Just after first screens were shown)

Want to know opinions of those who already played it.

1)What's the combat system like? Because I don't want another Dungeon Siege.

2) How long does leveling up take? Again, I played many RPGs to date and I seriously no longer have hours to spend leveling up. I want a RPG where you can play for an hour and a half everyday just to quest, trade, chat, duel etc..

3) How populated are the worlds? (I realize the game just launched...)

4) How's the connection?

1) Think a 3d version of Diablo 2.

2) At the begining it usually takes 45 - 60 minutes to level. That also depends on what your doing (trading etc...)

3) As of last night, the American servers were pretty medium as for how many were on.

4) I only had 1 lag spike, and it was caused by my wireless router not liking my microwave All in all, the servers were nice (atleast the American ones, haven't tried the European ones).

@Raven - to go to the american servers Its in the options list (when I get home I can be more specific) before you load your character. But be warned you can only switch them a few times...

BTW, theres a storage system in Ascalon Ruins now, not sure about pre-destruction Ascalon though... I store all my hides and such in it. And the War Pick that I got (and will never use) for preordering from gamestop. Probably will make a War/Ran or a Monk/War next time so I can use that fancy War Pick.

1/ Never played Dungeon Siege. It's works much like Priston Tale, or Diablo. (not surprising as most of the developers are the original Diablo creators)

2/ Well it depends really. Quests vary in length, and are fun providing you with large amounts of EXP. You can still go off killing monsters for smaller experience, there are more than enough near the start to keep any adventurer busy.

While the Exploration killing won't get your levels up quickly, the Main Quest will.

You can easily get Level 3-4 within an hour. Level 10 shouldn't take more than 4-5 hours of gameplay.. but that's if your set on just leveling up though. The worlds are huge and completely linked.

In terms of fun with trading, and battling I think the game is on-par with Final Fantasy. It's good on your own, but much quicker in a party. To that effect though your experience isn't cut based on your party... Instead you all get what you would if you'd beaten a creature on it's own. So I think that is better, especially when your trying to level at 15-20.

This all said, as you go up in level an experience, so do the monsters in the area your in. So you'll be able to level up slightly quicker than other games.

Still I think that if your trying to go up higher than 30, it's going to start taking ALOT to achieve. The balance is there to make sure that gamers who play day'n'night, won't have a completely unfair advantage. Something I've often found to be an issue given I tend to only play these games for an hour or so a night.

To give you a rough idea of the total time, I played almost non-stop over the weekend of the beta's.. from Level 1 I was able to get to Level 20... that was like over 3 weeks worth of my regular play time though.

3/ A LOT. More districts will appear the more players that are online. Each area tend to hold something like 50-60 people. Even at 09:00 GMT (this is on release day which is like 2hr in to release servers going live) there were a good 8 European Districts.

4/ Excellent, it was bloody good even on 56K during the Beta. Cable though I've not experienced any lag, even when heavy downloads are going on in the background.

The game automatically updates areas as your playing, so the game engine updates are only minor. Often it's done in-game too so all you have to do is restart the game.

Cool, I was gonna start a Guild wars thread today! Ya the game is sweet, my char name is "Brone The Barbarian" so hope to see some of you guys on.

@Megaton
1) Click target it auto attacks... but then you get to customize your character with up to 300 skills (150 for each class and you can have 2 class combo War/Ranger)

2) Only 20 lvs in the whole game and it doesnt take long to lv at all (Played about 6-7 hours yesterday and im already 7) You can also automatically create a lv 20 char but he can only be used for PVP and he can only use the skills that you unlock with a RPG char. You can also use the templates that the game gives you but they suck.

3) Its one Server/World so its really populated, but it uses "Instance" zones and "Districts to divide popular areas.

4) Connection seems fine for me, but there is the ocasional lag.

In conclusion if you can afford the 50 bucks you should have this game on your comp.

I was wondering about the PVP Characters. I'm sure you cna level quicker though.

Oh I'm 'Tesoi Raven', forgot to mention that. Was going to go for Oni Raven again but then I felt this name had more impact.

^_^ I'm sure some members would understand why.

Well I'm glad the combat is similar to Diablo2. I was going to mention it but I didn't know if you guys played it or not.

As for the experiance gain, it's as bad as I thought.
I don't mind leveling up, but what I hate is mining weak repetetive creatures. Back when I was a Diablo2 Junkie, I could take ay char from Lv1 to 79 in 6 hours. But this game sounds difficult...oh well I guess I'll try it though. Thanks for answering.

Quote: "it doesnt take long to lv at all (Played about 6-7 hours yesterday and im already 7"

NO.
This is exactly the OPPOSITE of what I was saying.
I go to school, I do community service, and I'm starting work (part-time) this Friday. I DON'T have time to play 6-7 hours per day. I was hoping for a rewarding game where you could play 1-2 hours per day and still be good at it. (I don't want a game where you miss 2 hours of gametime and when you come back all your friends are riding f***ing pumas or dragons or something)

The game is less based on "what level you are" and more on how good you are. Its also a little bit of "can you con enough people into giving you crafting materials for cheap so you can get some kick ass armor" too.

Speaking of conning, the last thing I did last night was get 50 hides for 50 gold from some moron newb in ascalon. 10 hides were selling for 380 from the materials trader, so if you take that into account, you can see how much I ripped him off

I see your being as nice to newbies as ever.
I guess I'll have to make it to New Ascalon first, but I don't want to leave the area I'm in right now. Having a blast doing all of the mini-Quests.

You get this little girl that if you buy a flute for her follows you around, healing you. Kinda nifty.

The highest lv in the game is 20. So the first day I played and Im already almost half way to top lv. You also have to realize that the game is not hours played, but skill. (Thats what the makers are trying to push)

That's because it's purley skilled based. I'll probably be Adair Shadowblade and either an elementest, necromancer, or warrior. I just have to wait until I go get it at 4.

I'm not sure I like the idea of being capped at level 20... although yeah that's goong take a while to reach with the time I put in.
The fact is, without leveling up.. I tend to find gameplay boring.

It's weird because getting to new levels doesn't actually bother me, but it's the need to take on new quests just to get new levels and see new things. Also to know 'wow this thing was tough, i'll just nip off to level for a while and try again'

After a while either it'll get frustrating to beat something because I can level further, or the thrill will have gone because things just drop over dead after a few attacks.

No doubt this is to encourage the whole PvP and Guild action... but to be honest that part of the game just doesn't interest me greatly. While I like having a guild for the snazzy cape, I don't care much for actually going against other players. I mean it wasn't exactly amazingly fun because all you did was mostly a brawl fright, there didn't seem to be much skill involved.

I mean sure there was skill in choosing the skills you took and how you played to get the kills, but on the whole there was no-one objective or such... it was just 'kill the other players more before time runs out'.

Got kind of boring to me, very quickly. The FFXI Ballisca (which I tried first time I played FFXI before the level rules cause the game had just come out) was fun because it was like a game of basketball only to tackle you killed that opponent heh

Ya thinking about the PVP and Guild stuff might seem boring now, but just wait till you get to 20 and all the PVP zones are open to you. You will have a ton of fun, and its great cause there are so many combinations of classes then all the combos of skill selections, youll be hooked for a while.

I read some where that even when you get to level 20, its only your HP and MP that gets capped, that your skill points keep going...

I'm not sure of this though, its only what I had teh read.

Alright, quick question... who completed the Bonus task on Main Quest Part 3?

Where you have to kill all of the Chaar Flame guys?
I got to the last one (who's a boss dude), my team finished off his little envoy very quickly.. we took out like 6 regular Chaar Flamecasters, or whatever they're called.

We were doing pretty well against the boss too, had him down to like 1/4 health, it seemed in the bag.
Then all of a sudden he goes on a rampage and kills all of us in 1-hit!

I mean WTF?.. how the hell are you suppose to defeat him?
What pisses me off more is that it's right at the end of the mission that takes a good 30-45minutes to actually complete.

I could've easily walked into the monestary and we'd of all gone on to Part 4 (Hold out mission) but instead decided to get the Exp from the Bonus mission. Just ticks me off a little bit, it wasn't as if we had low health... my nice regen spell was keeping everyone topped up quite well. Gah!

Got to go in and do it all over again now

Moved on to one of the American servers last night...
Totally different gaming experience.
While some American's are nice, on the whole they're a**holes to Party with.

Seriously. We were in town and I was the Party Leader. I said 'We're doing the Wayward Monk Quest first then we can decide what to do later'... We get in the area, half of them run off to do the main quest instead.

I said to them 3 f***ing times, 'Let us go back so we ALL have this quest' (the reason I told them in town was so they could get the right quest)... but they didn' sodding stop they just all ran off and completed the quest they f***ing wanted to.

That really got on my nerves by like the 3rd team who did that. Especially when one team, they rushed off in the opposite direction to do the main quest we'd decided on, but like we'd also decided to quickly do the sub-quest because it was on the way.

So an argument broke out when they all died because they didn't bother waiting for thier Monk support... THEN they expected us to revive them. What got me was Ophe revived one but then started attacking... apparently to protect him, but I thought it was a better idea to stand well back and just heal him up as he was revived so he could run and revive the others.

Needless to say we were all slaughtered very quickly. I think I'm going to stick to the International Districts for a while. There's barely any people in them so getting a team is ridiculously hard, as is trading. Thing is it's alot of people who got tried of thier own local servers... so if you go for a quest, the quest gets done without argument, without anyone doing thier own thing. You work as a team. Everyone seems to prefer speaking either English or Korean too, which definately helps.

Game screwed up my order, my banks fault though... still given each time I order I just put on standard delivery. I always get it next day. totally awesome service Game have.

I hope when GameStop try to take them over they either leave them to be self managed, and simply use it as a partnership, or they keep things running the way they are now. Game is without a doubt one of the best online retailers I've had the pleasure of buying from.

The support staff is actually helpful, and nice. Deliveries are awesomely quick (especially considering Royal Mail lol). The website is nice and simple to navigate.

Well anyways for those who are either too cheap to splash on the boxed copy, you can download using the client and order a key directly... it costs $25 iirc, not needed an extra key yet. Plan to get one for my brother though.

I'm a level 13 Mesmer / Monk.. my lil gal really looks awesome an regal too.

Wish I hadn't rushed at the start, but then I'll be making a second (technically third as I let my bro use second) charater when a friend gets it in a week or so.

Want to help her through it properly rather than only being there once she's made it past the starter quest.

I play, so does my bro, but i dont like it as much as "Star Wars Galaxies", theres not enough to do, and every aspect about it is worse than SWG besides graphics and load times. At least you dont have to pay monthly . It was probably worth the $25 split cost between me and my bro though. BTW, my names gil galvanti (what a surprise )

I've been looking at this game recently, and for the first time since Phantasy Star Online, I'm tempted to buy an online only game. My main gripe with online games is they charge you top-dollar for the game and then they have the nerve to charge subscription after just one month!

So, the reason for my posting here is a rather stupid question: Is Guild Wars worth buying?

(awaits verbal onslaught)

That's the best bit of Guild Wars - no monthly subscription!

I'd say it is worth buying, I don't usually play online games but this ones quite different and feels very similar to single player games in some bits (getting your own private map when doing quests) but it has all the upsides of a multiplayer game as well, like being able to join guilds etc.

I might get guild wars...

I have a question...

Quote: "theres not enough to do, and every aspect about it is worse than SWG besides graphics and load times. "

Is there really not enough to do?
Because some MMORPGs (World of Warcraft for example) i get the feeling that every character pretty much turns out the same way no matter what you do...

The only MMORPG that i really play is EQOA for the PS2
But since Guild Wars is free monthly I might go get it...

I say this because it gets too repetitive. You go talk to someone and they tell you to go escort, kill, or deliver something. You do it again. And again, and it gets boring.

You should try out SWG, its awesome, very few characters are the same . Theres a one month free trial.

From what I've seen Guild Wars isn't actually an MMORPG, it's an MORPG because (I assume) there isn't one persistent world.
Quote: "getting your own private map when doing quests"

If this is true, then it's more like Phantasy Star Online, where you log in with other people and play an isolated game. I'd prefer that actually.

Well... its both a MORPG and a MMORPG. When in town, your with tons other people, but when you do quests your with your party...

I haven't gotten bored of it yet, just lost time to play... thought today I have no work on anything to do, so I'll squeeze in a couple hours.

Guild wars has more because you can fight with other guilds and defend your fortress with a capture the flag type of feel and setup.

Unfortunately for those from the Beta, much of the Single Player story just isn't new. Even the design of the levels past Old Ascalon are identical... To a degree this is annoying given you've basically seen everything before.

This said some areas are far more beautiful now. Oh and there are some new armour and weapons available which is cool.

Still can't wait for Chapter 2 in November-December

My copy finally arrived the other day i'm a level 8 ranger/monk called Silent Coyote (couldn't think of any decent names). I think i've completed pretty much all the quests in the first area now so I will probably move on soon, just want to explore and admire the graphics a bit longer

ahh yes, that would be perfect

but my brother made a guild, and invited me allready by mistake (he sais he does not know how he did it.. must be because there is only one guild per cd or something).. i dont know if it is possible to join two guilds, and i dont know how do un-sign off a guild either.

my name is Grodrik Klerdiem, my fingers ran through the keyboard and that is the name they found

No monthly fee... that was their selling point. But they neglected to tell you that you have to pay for quarterly (or is it biannual) updates that are just as expensive as if you were paying a monthly fee.

I might try it out... I've tried every other MMO so I can't see this as being any different in that regard. But I think that my main focus of World of Warcraft will remain unchanged.

I read in the features for the game that updates were optional, there was no requirement to have to pay for and download the updates. It'd be rather bastard like if you forced people to pay for patches though!

I don't suffer from insanity - I enjoy every minute of it!

The game is released in Chapters. Like a book, each chapter allows you to have more items, more game areas, more monsters, etc..

But again like a book you don't HAVE to read a chapter if you don't want to. If your happy going over the same 20pages again and again then that's up to you.

I believe they said each chapter will be release ~6months apart from each other. Meaning *IF* you choose to constantly keep up with the games story and want all the items etc, then you'll be spending a one off fee for it.

This doesn't mean you'll be spending even close to as much as you would for say World of Warcraft.

WoW costs £35 Boxed (£8 more than Guild Wars)
Then costs £10/month unless you pay using a time-card which actually works out to paying almost double; but your paying for the exact time your using.

So in a yeah of playing if your on a the per monthly scheme you'll have spent £145. This doesn't include the planned add-on packs that will cost roughly £30 each.

Now unless my math is seriously bad, Guild Wars seems dramatically cheaper. Not to mention there that is ZERO COMMITMENT, either through purchasing the 'Time Card' or Month Fee.
