Hi guys.

I have WinXP Pro and just started an FTP server on my PC. The setup went beautifully, other then the fact I had to forward a few ports from my router. I can connect to it through telnet no problem but where do I set up thye different accounts and passwords? When I go to Properties and Security Accounts, it lets me enter username and password but it doesn't work when I try and log in. Help please.

What FTP server software did you use? If it's the Windows default stuff then you need to set-up a Windows user/password for every account you want. Would suggest something like NETFile FTP/HTTP Server instead to be honest (www.fastream.com)

Thanks. I will switch. But what would you recommend for an SMTP server? When I use the windows default the mail is never sent. I am behind a router but I set up port forwarding for that as well.

EDIT: I forgot to ask. Is that program a server or a client to connect to the server? (I need a server)

Says right in his thread title "IIS". Probably 5.0 if its on XP.

I tried to find the answer, but every website talks about using the "FTP Creation Wizard", which apparently I don't have nor does the Windows help file even mention it.

But you'll need to setup a group policy and all that junk.

Explains everything, though for Windows 2000 server, I figured my 2k pro would have the same basic web features like an ftp wizard.

It's an FTP server with built-in HTTP server as well. It's also free.

The best dedicated FTP server for high volume sites is Raiden FTPD, again free for personal use, but more complex to get running. Least you don't have to mess around with Active Directory etc to get users into it though.

Our work servers have Windows 2003 and IIS6 on them but trying to use the built in FTP server was so over complicated because you have to setup the users and passwords in normal windows admin area, and then make sure you have set all paths and permissions correctly.

We just disabled it and used Serv-U FTP server instead. Much easier!

We don't use the built in SMTP server as we have our own mail server, so can't help you there.
