Geek Culture / Using VNC through a Router - anybody help?

I have installed VNC on 4 PCs, sitting behind a Netgear router. I wamt to be able to access the PCs (or one of them at least) using VNC.

Some questions I have include:

1. What IP address do I use?
2. How do I work out the external IP address of the router? All I see is internal IP addresses.
3. How does VNC know which PC to go to once it gets past the router?

Never used VNC, but given the situation:

Foward the ports that VNC uses to the local IP that you need it to go (ipconfig to find out the ip... you know the deal).

To access it, i'd bet you'd use http://whatismyip.com/ to find out your ISP given IP (external), then 205.127.11.173:555 (the first part before the colon being your IP, then the port number after the colon) and it should bring you to it...

then again, i've never used VNC.

Edit: to use multiple PC's, there should be a option in VNC to make it use a different port? If so, you'll have to configure each installation on each computer to use a differnt port

ex

PC1 - 5675
PC2 - 8483
Pc3 - 8888
PC4 - 64363

Then in the router settings foward each of those ports to the coresponding PC's...

But like I said, i'm no VNC expert.

Found some useful info. Apparently you can set ports 5800 onwards for different PCs on your network. When using the VNC viewer, you select a display number, 0 being 5800, 1 is 5801, and so on.

My biggest issue was knowing how to configure the router. Apparently it has a web interface. Don't know why I didn't think of just testing it, my D-Link router has a web interface.

I'm still struggling. Tried to get into the Netgear Router admin page, and can't find the damn thing!

I found a login to a page (internal address 192.168.254.254) which had the ISP domain name displayed, and a message saying "Connected". There was no ooption to log in to the admin.

Anyone with knowledge of Netgear routers?

My netgear router's admin is 192.168.0.1

Default Username is usually: admin

Default password is either: password or 1234

Yes, tried it, that's the address of my D-Link. There's no literature for this thing (I've inherited the support of this network), and no extra literature on the Netgear site.

You have two routers connected ? If so the Netgear could be conflicting with your DLink if they both have the 192.168.1.1 address, in which case decative the DLink for the time being...

If your using a different IP range on your PC's then you need to get one to obtain the IP address automatically, so the web setup can be accessed.

Ah, okay...

Its possible the DNS on the Netgear has been changed, in which case you will need to obtain the IP address automatically, which at least will narrow the IP address to one of 254...

Why not do a firm reset ?

See this is why I use Belkin.. cause I can see anyones network, hacking it is just a case of finding the right encryption and key.
