How do i convert a Hard drive into a server? I've got a Spare 200GB Hard Drive in my PC which could be used as a server. How do I go about this? All help will be most appreciated!

I'm guessing webserver?

First off, we need to know what OS your going to be running on it. XP Pro or a Server OS is required... then you'll need to setup IIS (unless its a linux server, then things are played a bit differently)...

I like IIS a bit better then apache, just because of its ease of setup... so thats why I always suggest IIS to people new to this. Apache is good though...

It depends if you want PHP or not really Apache offers more that IIS I believe ($_SERVER variables for example, I'm not wholey sure though)

IIS is free aslong as you have an OS that allows it...

You'll have to add it though by going to the control panel, then "add remove programs" then "Add remove windows components". You'll need your OS disc when you add it, though it might DL it (can't remember, I always have my discs with me though).

IIS only comes win win xp pro - it doesn't come with home

Used to be Phoenix_insane registered in september 2003 despite what the date says to the left <--

forget IIS, use Apache. It CAN be easy. Download "IBServer" and it sets it all up for you. Comes with PHP and MySql for free also!

Use KNet - I wrote it and it's really, really easy to use and set up. The last full version (1.04c) is floating around the net, but there is a beta of version 2.0 out:

IIS is useful if you like windows, it can support php, mysql, access, asp and asp.net and does everything you want it to do in a matter of minutes.

Apache is more advanced, it supports mysql, php, and can be a pain to set up, unless you use something like what Leys suggested.

Desktop: AMD Athlon XP2800+,Radeon 9800 128MB, 1GB DDR RAM
Laptop: AMD Athlon 64M 3000+,Mobility Radeon 9700 128MB, 512MB DDR RAM

1) Download KNet
2) Install KNet
3) Run KNet
4) Click 'Open'
5) Select the directory your website is in
5) Select the home page of your website
6) *OPTIONAL* Select a 404 error page
6b) Click on Adress > Get URL to get your web address
7) Click on the close button, then hit 'Yes' (mimises KNet to Systrary)
8) Forget about it.
