I've been wanting to fool around with Newton and DarkSDK together, and the puzzle compo gave me the inspiration to do it. I've been working on the game for about 2 days now, and have all of the basics working. I will seriously improve the graphics before the game is done, but I think you can get an idea of the gameplay from the video.

basically you just need to get 3 balls of the same color to touch, and they dissappear. the real game will be tetris-style, where you are fighting to keep the playfield from overflowing (right now it just keeps it filled for testing).

also it's really easy right now, so I think I'll up the requirement to at least 4 balls touching. I of course will add a score system that gives big bonuses for combos

links work now, it was the filename, not the domain (just walaber.com works fine)

WOW!!! this looks like it'll turn into a seriuosly cool game!!!

Are you planning to replace the white ball with a gun sight or something in the final game?

Looking good walaber

Any chance of a tilt key so we can disturb the pile a bit in times of crisis?

yes, hopefully something more exciting than the current ghosted sphere

I also want to make the actual balls more interesting, right now they're a bit boring...

I will release some kind of a demo before the deadline to make sure the game is running properly on everyone's systems. not until I make a few more improvements though (score system, basic menu, etc).

indeed, Newton does all of the collision checking. the trick is deciding when exactly 4 balls have touched (yes, I upped the requirement to 4 balls).

here are a few screenshots to show my progress. I have added a lot, and have some fun ideas in the works now. the coolest addition so far is the smoke effect when you shoot a ball (see the video)

Sounds really good. maybe you could make something like "Bomb Balls". if you don't shoot them in time, they will explode and destroy other balls but you will lose points.

You also said that you wanted to make the balls themselves look more interesting. Maybe you could make some so they look like eyeballs, 8 ball etc..

It looks like it is coming together really nicely. i look forward to playing it.

I agree the balls could use some more variety... but I can't think of anything that holds together a "theme" for the game. I could make all sorts of balls (planets, sports balls, fruits, etc)... but I want to come up with something that meets the overall "feel" of the game, which is sort of industrial right now (with the look of the frame, etc).

by the way I've implemented the "bomb" ball effect, it's really cool

Looking good Walaber!

As for variety how about underwater mine-shaped balls simillar to this but a lot more cartoony and spikey. Would kinda fit to the industrial theme being all metallic and stuff and you could implement it so your blasts can't effect it etc... just a suggestion.

here's an early beta of the game. the basic functionality is there, and the game gets harder and harder as you play. when you lose it just goes back to the menu screen for now

no big instructions, just point and click. there is a slight delay between clicking and shooting. when you click, the bottom-most ball is dropped into the tube, and then shot. it will be shot at the location of the mouse when you clicked, even if you move the mouse after clicking.

basically try to get 4 balls touching.

there are 2 special balls, the "wild" (gold color) and "bomb" (has exclamation marks on it).

anyway, please let me know if you come across any problems, and I'd also really appreciate any input on the difficulty... too easy? too hard? etc.

d3dx9_25.dll could not be found. I know this has to do with direct x, but I have DX 9.0c, so there really shouldn't be a problem... Maybe you could find a way around having to use this or include it in your install?

I think that's because I compiled my project with Dark SDK using the absolute latest DirectX 9.0c release. if you get that error, you don't have the latest version...

DirectX Version: DirectX 9.0c (4.09.0000.0904)

Has a version beyond this been released? I could have sworn I had the latest patches... *hunts around for more*

new demo - this beta should work much better. i also included the directX dll, so it should work even without the absolute latest DX version.

all mouse problems should be fixed...

Very, very good - I would recommend making it more obvious what colour ball you have - I found it hard to keep looking across before every shot.

Keep up the good work.

Dumbo and Cool - DEFINATELY coming July 31st.

Beta release 3

this is the final beta before I consider the game "done". I have purposely kept the game very simple, I intended this project to stay a simple game

here are some screenshots from this beta:

I've said it before and I'll say it again: very impressive work, and such a short development period. I'll look into testing this later tonight. Will this only be released into the compo or are you going to put it elsewhere too?

fairly lukewarm response... anyone else give it a try? any problems?

p.s. of course I'll release the game on my homepage and in the finished projects forum when I release version 1.0
