I saw on the news today that a new law was passed that you have to get a ID card with like a bar code on it or something. i heard about it today they said the president already siad he'd sign it. I think this is a load of crap but we'll see.

Have you heard about this?

Do you think its a load of crap?

Didn't hear about it yet...but that is outrageous! Government wants to track us as we move around inside our own country? Absolutely crazy and absurd! What happened to being FREE?!? Damn we need a new president.

First of all an ID card with a barcode, if that's what it is, is hardly a way for the government to track you. I mean, don't most driver's licenses have a way to be swiped? (I know mine has a magnetic strip on it). Let's not exaggerate here until we know what it really is--- do you have a link?

How do you think they would track you w/barcode? A barcode would be used to identify you, but I don't see how you would be tracked.

1. Where did you get this news?

2. Where did you get the President saying that?

3. We already have to have an ID with a bar code to live a normal life. It's called a driver's licence.

4. If the government really wants to, they can find you pretty much anywhere in our borders already. Nationwide surveilence camera webs, complete phone network/record access, and complete credit card use access make it virtually impossible to hide for very long.

But the details i heard where

You would no beable to get into government buildings without the ID card as well as liek 2 other palces i don't remember. But it dosnt sound good eaither way.

My dad wants to move to van couver because he is also a citizen of canada so looks like i might need to find a room mate soon lol

Actually, he was biking.

What's so abnormal about that? Is he not allowed to have a life ? Is riding a bicycle considered less responsible than getting a blo...?

Biking - Running... same damn thing, with the exception of a 2 wheel device propelled by a chain, gears, and pedals.

I fail to see how an ID card will stop planes being hijacked, if it's easy for these people to get fake passports, I'm afraid it'll be easy for them to get fake ID cards.

But what next, when ID cards fall flat? - dna scans?, chip implants?, maybe they'll just make it illegal to own a front door.

A place where I used to work has a small id card with the thumb print identification on it..

only people who were accepted for that level, could use that card.

So say you have like 3 levels of authentication and 5 people

Jack and Jim are LVL1
Jill and Greg are LVL2
Peter is LVL3

Everyone could use LVL1
Only Jill, Greg and Peter could use LVL2
Only Peter could use LVL3

Would mean you could use anyone's card who was equal or lower level, but not anyone who's card was high level. Ofcourse it ment having your thumb-print scanned in when you started work, but considering my IBM Laptop also uses Thumb-print Password Security ^_^ it only takes like 2seconds nowadays.

Obviously with systems like that it no doubt was some independant system that was physically guarded to prevent interjection, and getting the correct thumbprints isn't easy given no-two are the same.

Aparently the major credit card companies were thinking of implimenting this technology instead of Chip&Pin a few years back.

I like the system ^_^ .. I doubt it's case of keeping tabs on people, just a way to help prevent identity fraud from happening so much. It really is rampant right now.

IDs have always existed, from passports to driver licenses to even credit cards. This is nothing new, and I don't see this going to work either tbh.

Before this has been posted here...I have heard rumors of it so I belive it all to be quite true. Sure, you may not think it's a big deal, but believe it or not, things in this country have been getting worse and worse and most people are failing to realize it.

I don't really see why thumb prints are being ignored - I mean you can buy little usb pen-drives with thumb print security, it's not like the technology is expensive at all these days.

Thing is, with a thumb, you have the choice - to prove your ID you stick your thumb on a sensor thingy and your set, people who need it will use it, and people who'd rather avoid it could chop their thumbs off, or tell them to get stuffed. The whole argument is against us all being tagged and watched by big brother, the problem is we have no trust left in these commercial security solutions because 1 in 5 of us are victims of the gaping security holes. My little sister got targeted just last week, 80 bucks disapear from her bank account and the bank has absolutely no clue as to who it was, there's no contact details for it at all - surely ID cards can't help that, the only thing that can help that is if the banks and credit companies get a clue. Frankly whoever did it wants cut - she doesn't work and has 2 kids to support, they don't care who they rip off or how, they don't mind taking your last few bucks - these people are the problem, not us so why should we carry the solution for the people we pay to carry it for us.

The government has failed miseribly to sell this idea to us, they should accept that and move on to a system that suits us, not them.

You can't just get pissed off because you hate Bush. Show proof that 1)this will be a law 2)it is intended to invade your privacy 3) you will be tracked. I can't find any news of this anywhere.

Agreed Van B

My bank was the same way USbank is a horrible bank to bank at i think ima go back to my credit union as they arnt total idiots. The first 2 months of my banking at a non-credit union where horrible i had funds disappearing like crazy so i confronted my bank and they reinbursted me for what i had lost or i was going to sue them and im sure there is something weird going on there because the people seemed uneasy when i came in and started complaining.

But it could just be the fact that they don't like people who complain. heh.

From what i ehard the cards are sopost to help stop illegal aliens from staying in the US and so on but i think it's going to end up like how the nazi's had it 50 years ago or so "Can i see your papers" is what im thinking i'll hear everytime i go outside in the next 10 years along with the idea that the US will evolve into a 1984 type of nation (1984 is a book go find it and read it HL2 is sorta based off it or atleast there are a crap load of similaritys)

UnderLord if there are 5/3 banks in your area I would recomend them. I have used 6 different banks in the past and not happy w/any of them. I have been using 5/3 for five years and very satisfied. I used BancOne for awhile and had similiar problems that Van B explained, and Key Bank
just does not like customers(I think).

What news?

There's been rumor of giving people barcodes for YEARS. It's just a rumor, and if there is any truth to it, he most likely misinterpreted it like a hotdog hugging a bonfire.

He probably heard it from one of his 10 year old friends during recess. Let's all take off our tin foil hats and get back to life as we know it... like camping out for Sharkboy and Lava Girl in glorious 3D!

Wait.. is this about giving people barcodes, not giving them an Identity Card that can be scanned?

Cause it sounds like someone saw an episode of Dark Angel and though it was a news report.

I think it also bears mentioning that it's the Democrats, not the Republicans, who have historically pushed through new required forms of government controlled identification.

Thumbprints is a risky idea, people already get murdered for the sake of a pair of trainers, you think a mugger thats willing to kill you for your shoes is gonna stop at cutting off your thumb in return for total access to your bank account?, I can imagine the conversation now....

I see Bert got mugged last week

Oh! realy?, how do you know?

He has to use both hands to hold his coffee cup

umm yeah! right!, I`ll stick to a PIN, taking care of my card and making sure nobody can see me type the number, at least that way the only person spending my money is me.

Governments are generally stupid and operate for THEIR best interest rather than the people's(like many "free" country's are supposed to do), so all in all since I live in the USA, i still have one freedom. The freedom to say:

I HATE THE UNITED STATES GOVERNMENT!

p.s., not the country, just the government

Ah don't worry. This happens here every few years. Basically somebody remembers we are supposed to be a free country and all that, and the subject fades away.

Anyhows, did anyone see that documentary a while back with 2 blokes in a pub with a laptop and some devices, and they basically fake a thumbprint that bypasses the scanners. Someone will always beat it.

Cheers
