i was thinking that it would be a cool effect in an rts if you could watch your units training and your vehicles constructed, just like buildings display gradual animation as they near completion(like aoe or starcraft) you could watch your little marines doing drills and practicing with their guns in a small fenced in area near the barracks. vehicles could be gradually constructed in a yard outside the factory. they would, however, be vurnerable to enemy fire. what would be the best (and fastest) way to do such a thing? just having it have a few frames of animation that are played ?

Yes, maybe have 5 states and switch between them manually to show progress ... Maybe have a few more states, to show damage too.

Too keep poly's down, you could switch textures, and have transparent
areas in the spare textures ...

You might be able to do it by having preset animations. You load your models a modelling program, animate them like you want, glue them together, and save it. You then load it into DB and play the animation.

You could also have images of the objects(units) moving around and texture a ghosted plain with them. The first idea would work better and be easier though.

Yeah i think that would be a great idea. However implimenting the idea of units training will be a lot easier, as this can be easily incorporated into the A.I., however I believe using animation to view units being constructed will be the best way of doing it, by gradually having the unit being constructed over time.
