Well, in a way he's correct I think. If you have something and you know that it IS either hardware OR software, you could ask yourself the question 'Can I kick it?' If the answer is yes, it is indeed hardware, and otherwise it's software... So in a way you could use this question to define the difference between hardware and software.

I'm sorry for any examples of my bad english that shows it's not my native language.

My teacher used the phrase, "If you can touch it, it's hardware, otherwise it's software". Sort of the same

You can bet I'm in IRC right now...

People who do IT should know the difference between hardware and software anyway, There should be some exam before they can get into an IT class...so no retards who allways get D's...

Well if he told you the way to tell is to kick it then he obviously does know the difference.

The vast majority of IT teachers are not IT teachers by choice (they actually learnt to teach say Math and get roped into it). I'm sure this will change over time.

Besides, kids always reckon they know more than their teachers anyway.. regardless of the subject.. I certainly used to. It's a youth thing

Arr tis true. Stupid people asking questions delays the lesson so you have to do less work!!! (assuming that you already know what he's teaching you which it sounds like you do).... so be grateful! More time to screw about....

The CD itself isn't the software (you could argue it isn't hardware either, but it's certainly far more like hardware than software).

Same goes for firmware.

A CD without data, is pointless, therefor not it's own entity
The CD is the program, if the CD is damaged the data is fuct

Yes, I'm going with that. A CD is software.

A CD is just Media...

The data isnt really software either...It could just be files...

and about screwing about > I cant, They blocked access to TheGameCreators and these forums... .

and I asked for extra space today and they only gave me a measly 15mb... , I think a removable USB thumb drive is the solution to space problems...

A CD without data is a CD without data, it simply has no little grooves laser etched into the surface. A CD with software has little grooves burned on it - that is the only actual physical difference between the two. The item itself hasn't changed.

The CD is nothing more than a lump of etched plastic, nothing about it even resembles software until a CD drive passes a laser over the surface and reads: it's part of a completely hardware process. If you consider a CD as software then you must also consider your hard drive as software, USB flash devices, media tapes, console cartridges, etc as software too.

It was implied a CD with data on it.

Any data is considered software. A bit is software.

The Software is the data, the data is the bits, the bits are what are on the CD.

A CD is a piece of media, ie. hardware. That is why you refer to the software as being 'on' the CD, rather than saying that the CD 'is' the software.

In addition, 'any data' is not software. Software is a set of instructions for a processor which causes it to perform a certain task. Hence database contents are not usually software, neither are the contents of my "Monty Python's Greatest Hits" CD.

I agree, data/bytes/bits can be considered software - but bits aren't on the CD - teeny tiny notches are all that's actually on the CD. They aren't turned into bits/bytes/etc until the CD drive swipes the laser across the surface and performs this translation - without the translation they're nothing more than little grooves.

I have something that's on everyone's mind:

"Who cares"

So some teacher is trying to explain software and hardware to a group of dolts. There are people in my school who can't work a calculator.

It's M-E-G-A-T-O-N. NOT MEGATRON.

Letters are letters.

Letters arranged a certain order however create poetry.

What is poetry? Just a mixture of letters. What is software? Just a mixture of 'bits'.

Facts are meaningless.
You could use facts to prove anything that's even remotely true.

It's compulsary

I feel sorry for you! I would have rather spent it on anther, useful GCSE.

I 'C' T is purely a governmental subject. The great ideal of children being about the competantly produce party invites, run Access and be able to "search safe" on the internet.

I mean, where's the communication in IT? Programmers spend most of their time silently sitting in front of a computer (yeah, I konw there's emaio and MSN :X)

Computing on the other hand is a proper computer subject. Rather than be taught the obvious then come out with a useless qualification if you plan to work in the dev field then Computing teaches you all the nitty gritty like ASM, data structures, OOP and programming.

@neo - how on earth did you manage to get an E in the coursework? What did you have to do? Was yours too complex for the teacher?

Facts are meaningless.
