so... the E3 Nintendo press conference is now over, and it was the most interesting yet!

while at the same time. still know nothing about the Revolution itself really.
so what do we know? oh that it is the size of 3 dvd cases stacked on top of each other... this console was small enough that the ceo took it out of his pocket!

also know that it will be backwardly compatible.
yeah so GameCube games..

erm, and N64 games, and SNES games, and NES games, and... well you get the picture. Nintendo are keeping with thier promise to provide game experiences rather than appealing to just the masses.

as well as not taking away from thier current userbase by still firmly detailing that there are a guarenteed 60 titles due for the Cube over the next year.

the consolidation of the GameBoy Micro also is a sign that GBA games are not going to be drying up either.
only the next few days will show what the Revolution prototype can do, but the end result right now looks as if Nintendo are sticking two-fingers up at polite Console society.

will they get away with it a second time? with prices for development tools set to drop to allow more innovative games to be published on the Revolution.. I'd say that Nintendo has just open up a beloved library of over 2 million games for it's customers with the hope that they will continute to have innnovative games in the foreseeable furture.

hopefully with the secret surrounding the specifications and in particular even the wireless controllers, that this means we've got alot of excitment ahead.

without a doubt they had the biggest reactions of any of the conferences yet! .. with the outro footage of the new Zelda, I for once say that fans of Nintendo aren't going to be disappointed.

So screw the rest of the world ^_^

I heard it was going to be fully revealed on Thursday Can't wait.

I'll see if some fansites have a video of the build-up conference you saw. Do you actually get to see it?

If I seriously wanted to play my dusty NES, I'd drag it out along with Castlevania and with my $10 N64. This new console better have something good in it and not one of Nintendo's wacky "revolutionary" schemes.

Not at all.

- Free Xbox-live style online play system
- Pure wireless controllers
- The size of 3 DVDs
- Downloadable library of games
- Built in wifi, plus wifi launch games

no specs as yet.

Facts are meaningless.

Yeah they might have the thing I saw, it's about an hour long.
While the Microsoft and Sony presentations were over an 1hr 30min, I can't say that I was AS excited during them as I was while watching a DJ Mix on two Nintendo DS consoles..

Seeing new Zelda footage, new Pokémon footage (don't care what people say Colessum was cool and deserved to be a full RPG, XD promises to offer that.).. overally they didn't really show much, but they just seemed to be having more fun.

It was less like 'this is our new console, it's going to change the world through awesome graphics', and more like 'these are what we as a company are offering to you over the comming year'

Given neither the PS3 or Revolution are planned for release before E3 2006, if not just after.. well it seemed sensible to only preview what was to come rather than unveil it all.

I liked the comment at the start,
'The Nintendo DS is out-selling the Sony PSP by 2:1. Yet some people might moan "The PSP isn't out in europe yet!" and my answer to that is. Nintendo made thier release date in Europe, not our problem what Sony do."

mwhahaha ^_^ you've gotta love the attitude they have

did you see the Nintendogs bit?

"OMG! :") I didn't teach her to do that!", I was laughing so hard.
The game looks a bit like Tamagochi but evolved. Cool though, might get it when it's released here in a few months.

You notice all those people who are bitching about what's wrong with the current console generation also now have nothing to add.. with a console that promises to add more inventive games plus a back library of over 2 MILLION Classic titles?

It's gonna be awesome haveing the entire library of games that I grew up with at my fingertips.

Also gonna be awesome having a FREE X-Box Live! Style System.
Something that annoyed me about PSO on the X-Box was it cost plus the Live! subscription. The big sticking point is the cost with a lot of games. Nintendo have promised NO FEES FOR ONLINE GAMES OR THE SERVICE.

This means finally FREE Phantasy Star Online! Hopefully we're also looking at some other new MMO games to enjoy. Now that Nintendo are fully supporting thier Online Community rather than seeing it as a non-issue with the GameCube. The new CEO has a new attitude towards gaming, it is a fresh breath of air. Quite frankly it feels fun an exciting. ^_^

X-Box 360 in November 05, $250
Revolution in April 06, $TBA
PS3 in Spring 06, $400

i'm sure the PS3 is impressive and all, but i'll wager that the Revolution will retail cheaper than the 360.. likely around $200-250.

should be quite cheap to get the X-Box and Revolution. PS3 however is going to dent the wallet hard.

That price for the X-Box 360 is just the base model, no online gaming or movie playing or anything. There are two more expensive models, I believe at around $350 and $500 or something.

Because he had custom designed, massive pockets

Frankly I think the Revolution's going to bomb unless it seriously undercuts the 360 price-wise. The fact that PS3 and 360 both have a vast array more features than it does combined with the 360's early release and powerful lineup of launch titles and the PS3's awesome hardware stats easily eclipse all the good things I've heard confirmed about the Revolution so far.

Then again, at least it doesn't look like a laser printer

truth is though that no-one outside of Nintendo really knows what the Revolution is capable of.

that said, none of the GameCube games have relied on the hardwares performance abilities to provide enjoyable games.
although Nintendo can't boast it's annual turn-over is close to Sony's.. the truth of the matter is that neither can Microsoft.

However when you get down to it, both Microsoft and Sony have spent billions on developing thier new systems. Nintendo however have spent roughly 1:8th of what those companies have. They've not set out to be the most powerful, just as they didn't set out to out-do either Sony or Microsoft last time.

If the Revolution performs the same as the GameCube then frankly Nintendo will be still the only company actually making a real profit margin. Micosoft had been paying almost 4years in order to write of thier development debts. Sony also had huge development debts, but more importantly are the debts they got in-to with constantly haveing to replace hardware on faulty PS2s.

When you consider Nintendo were making a profit on thier hardware even at the reduced costs, and still are. Not to mention profit on game sales, as well as high SDK profits from developers.

The GameCube didn't barely survive like the N64 did, but it stood pretty proudly being different. Effectively saying "No, I'm not going to be a shill to unimaginative games."

Nintendo relied on thier own franchises to create fun an enjoyed versions of genres, even reinventing old characters to provide a more entertaining experience.

It is no wonder that according to a UbiSoft survey, most gamers when faced with the Multi-platform question of 'which platform to get', often orientated to the GameCube at almost 4:1. Particularly with thier own quite imaginative Beyond Good and Evil title, that has promised to make a return for 2006.

See that's all most gamers care about really. A machine doing the job it's suppose to.. Let Sony keep it's Cinematic Realism graphics; doesn't mean thier controller is going to be any nicer or easier to use. But you'll have pretty scenary when your frustrated.

FREE Month Subsciption. Note the words at the end of the sentence.

The Revolution will provide gamers with a FREE Service with NO FEEs for any game except for purchase.

Quote: "Sounds cool. But the slim PS2 model is like a CD player..."

The PS2 is roughly how big it is.. When you consider the PS2 is hardly ground breaking technology, and the Revolution will be roughly the same speed as the X-Box 360 (as they use an almost identical setup apparently). Sorry but that just makes the PS2-Slim seem like Slim-pickings. pun intended

I beleive this was where Nintendo wen't wrong. While the 'kiddy' image stuck with them, gamers instinctly went for the PS2 and Xbox. I don't know who these other "gamers" are, but if you stopped an average teenager at a school, odds are he prefers Grand Theft Auto over Mario. Franchise characters really put some people off, and I worried this new "Mario 128" would do as good as Nintendo feels.

So now we're comparing 2 different generation systems together? Doesn't seem right considering PS2's age. And why doessize matter anyway? Who cares how big it is? Aslong as it runs well. Dunno about other people but I plop my game system under my TV and it stays there like hot chocolate on my cat's fur.

Who cares about the adverage teen.
All they want is to blow [censored] up.

Resident Evil 4, Killer 7, Gheist. All GameCube Exclusives. (well for the next year anyways)

Sorry, but people bash Mario, Fox McCloud, Zelda, etc.. until they play the games. It's all just a case of fanboy's being like "well it's no Halo"...

and ya know what they'd be right. Because Halo wasn't revolutionary, it wasn't inventive, and without playing it with your mates or over Live! worldwide.. it just isn't any fun.

What does Nintendo provide gamers with and have done? Social Gaming.
Almost every Nintendo game is based around having friends to play them with.

Almost every PS2 or X-Box game revolves around you.. in a room.. on your own.

What does that tell you about the teenagers of today?

[edit]

me and my brother often take our consoles around other ppls houses.
hell I had a gamecube tied into my car for a year for when on a long journey.

the low power and small size of the console allows you to put it anywhere, take it anywhere, and use it anywhere.

For the GameCube you can get a Screen that sits ontop and a battery pack that sits underneath and got out to the park.. play a few round of Mario Party with your mates while waiting for the tennis courts to become free.

it's more social that using GBAs.. and is fun.
my cube travels with me most places, cause if there's nothing else to do you can just flip it on and have some fun.

Nintendo is so getting my money.

I'm thinking they're appealing to the average testerone-pumped teen with the new darker Zelda title, but still keeping it fun for all the existing zelda fans.

Actually the Xbox Live bronze package (free for Xbox 360) does NOT include gameplay, which is seriously stupid as that's all it's good for.

As for 2006, it will be just like 2002 when I went out and bought and Xbox and an NGC--- I will get a 360 and a Revolution. It is pretty sweet that it will feature backwards compatibality with all of their consoles The Xbox is also backwards compatible, but only with selected games.

I believe the Revolution will kick ass--- Nintendo has so many cool licenses that it's a sure winner in my books.

As Raven says only for a month. This is free. Forever.

Which means since I've got a wifi router I'll be able to connect from the start - altough I'm sure those without a router would be able to get a cable or something.

Actually, FULL online access on Xbox360 live is subscription. Downloads, patches are free. Extras a pay once like ring tones, etc.

Xbox360 only has a DVD drive. PS3 has a blue-ray drive which plays DVDs, CDs and the new 54Gb Blueray discs (and plays PS1 & 2 games). Looks like Blueray will be phasing out DVD just as we're finishing upgrading our VHS libraries with DVDs!

Majority of developers are creatign games either
a/ To continue a franchise
b/ The Adverage Gamer

The Adverage Gamer is Male and between 18-26.

Quote: "Very sterotipical of you, which leads me to believe you don't know as much about the market as you think you do."

Really? Well go figure, a stereotype is often built on an 'adverage' perception.

Males GENERALLY enjoy blowing [censored] up. I know I do.
Teenage Males are often far more amped about things Exploding, Sex, and Generally Violent things.

Oh dear that's a stereotype... but face facts.
Halo 2 has sold more copies than The Sim 2 on every platform.
It has outsold Tekken 4, and Grand Turismo combined.

Halo is a huge franchise for Microsoft and what has basically made the X-Box what it is today. All because over 70% of the gaming market is Male between 13-26.. and they like to blow [censored] up!

Who give a crap about stereotyping each age group. I know having worked in several development companies, that DEVELOPERS DON'T.
We make games that we want to play, then give it to playtesters to get thier feedback... if they don't like it, say because you don't have 600 odd weapons with which to torture your opponents, then you add more weapons.

And ya know what? Surprisingly those games SELL. Go figure, even though they were developed to pander to a stereotype.

Tell you what, you answer for my why the GameCube has a kiddy image?

I'm sure you have some perfectly explation for it that doesn't even hit people can be catagorised through stereotypes.

If you actually look at it, hardly any details have been released. We have wireless joypads (yay! no more cable tangling or pulling the console off the shelf with sudden movements), looks to die for and completely free online gaming that requires no wiring for me because it's got wifi built in. I'm happy.

Lets not assume what hasn't been revealed yet isn't actually present.

Peter that was my entire point. The only thing that makes Halo the success it is.. is the Multi-player aspect.
Without it, it's nothing.

It sounds like a bash, but it's more trying to make a point about what Nintendo are offering that makes it a very appealing console.

One thing we do know about the WiFi connectivity of the Revoltion, is that EVERYTHING is WiFi.

TV Adapter, Controllers, Microphone, etc.. nothing has a lead anymore.

We also know that the Controller will run for 24hrs worth of gameplay before needing to be recharged, and the controllers will let you know when your running low on power.

Another thing we know is that you will be able to program your controllers to respond to a signal. Not been disclosed in what way, either Audio or Vibration .. maybe both. Still this does make me happy.

We also know that Nintendo's online service is going to be GameSpy compatible, with the actual Front-End being developed by GameSpy.
Who let's be honest literally pioneered the 'X-Box Live!' style of online game interaction. (Though BTs WirePlay was a very good step in the right direction at the time)

I'm just so excited and iching for details about the actual hardware. I am quite positive that it'll be running equal if not just ahead of the X-Box 360.

I don't want to make this sound like a "I'm right, you're wrong" argument but those quotes are way overrated. Things exploding, sex, and gore? Is that what you think the only thing we all care about in a game? How shallow are we?

And who is this "Adverage gamer". I only have one definition for gamer: Person who enjoys playing games at moderation. Age does not matter, and hell I think it's pretty obvious that a huge chunck of games on the market today are aimed at males, in sepcific, teenage males.

And "The Adverage Gamer is Male and between 18-26" thing? You can't trust a simple mindless poll. The only reason they got to that number is by assuming the 18 under audiance didn't get thier hands on Games like San Andreas that are rated M. (And let's not kid ourselves, we know that junk doesn't work and kids can get thier hands on whatever games they want regardless or ratings or store policy)

Mouse, your blog's point of view is as about as twisted as the case for the Iraq war

We've been given no details about the console at all apart from small snippets that, let's face it, wouldn't look out of place in any console and yet you can make such confident assertions such as

Quote: "Not only that, but they have the nerve to name their new console 'Revolution'. Its tally of revolutionary features:

It's small
It blows"

I'm met some anti-Nintendo people in my time but that is so extreme it made me laugh. Sorry

oh my mistake, i forgot that both you and mouse happen to be seasoned professionals who have lots of experience on the development cycle of titles during thier production lifetime.

so be my guest to sit there telling me excatly how things work in my own job.

i mean after all we don't make games for the masses to enjoy, through the market research conducted by the publishers to let us know what the market is asking for and demanding along with the adveraged statistics...

no what we do is we go to some high-school anywhere in america, kidnap a teenager and demand he tell us exactly what he wants from a video game to make it popular. as the market revolves around the generation of idiots who can't actually decide if they want soda or juice with thier lunch.. i mean after all it is a the sound choice to be giving them all of the creative power.

yeah.. tell ya what, look around you and see how far teenage ingenuity gets you.

i mean fgs, in one thread your going on about how we don't need a new generation of consoles.. only to find another post 20seconds later saying how awesome the new consoles are.

this is pretty pointless because as we all know the teenager is always right. after all they do know everything in the universe..
so good luck with that.

I don't give a damn for consoles (never owned one after the 2600), but it's interesting to see the widespread fanboy-ism as soon as it comes to this topic.

I'm sorry I questioned your boundless knowledge of consoles, Raven. After all, we all know you're an industry professional as well as a Jedi Knight.

Actually I agree with Raven in this thread about almost everything. The average gamer they're selling these too are NOT teens anymore, they're 18-35. They're the ones who grew up in the 80's with the NES, who are now older and have jobs and can afford to shell out $300 a console. Even if you don't enjoy gore, sex, and violence, it doesn't mean that the average teen doesn't. That's why they also create niche games like Animal Crossing and Katamari Damacy--- for less mainstream appetites.

I don't know why these console threads have to turn into nitpicking every last sentence. Like I said in the other thread, there's no point in fanboyism as their target market can afford to get one of each console, or at least 2 out of 3. It's not like you have to sign an agreement after you buy a console stating that you'll never purchase their competition's console too.

And we really can't depend on what MS, Sony, and Nintendo say about their consoles yet, either. I mean, the PS2 was hyped up incredibly years before it was released, and it ended up being disappointingly inferior to what they said it would amount to.

BACK ON TOPIC:

One thing that I can't get around with the wireless controllers is batteries. It will royally SUCK if we have to keep changing the batteries on these things--- hopefully there's a wireful version of the controllers we can choose to use.

Not entirely sure if it's true for the US/Europe, but the lastest Nintendo Wavebirds don't use traditional batteries but some rechargable cell that like most electric toothbrushes you just have to put it back on the base.

no wires at all.. and bam 30minutes recharged for another 4hrs gameplay. in the conference Nintendo did say they'd found a way to extend the battery to almost a day of gameplay.

most recharge units are good for 1000x charges; so if it lasts a day that's about 3years before you have to replace it.

i really like the whole no wires at all it is a really clever idea.. it makes everything feel high-tech not having to physically plug it in. from the current design, doesn't look like anything will be plugged in except the power lead.

this is interesting because i wonder if the memory cards are going to connect via the controllers like on the N64 and Dreamcast or if the memory cards themselves will be able to be used provided they're in-range. now that would be awesome.. just putting all your memory cards in the draw and using them without having to take them out.

I agree its a good idea, because for example it means you can throw them around the room properly . The only thing I don't like the idea of is the fact that you might somehow lose them.

It would indeed

Sorry but that rant looks too authentic

I'm just thinking about this....

Specs expected to be similar to Xbox 360
Wireless stuff
Free online gaming
Downloadable games

Where's the bit that makes it oh so bad

Reading a couple of money sites predicting costs for the new consoles:

Xbox360 $400
PS3 $500
Evolution (will definitely be cheaper than both.)

Quote: "Price points of $59.99 or higher were mooted for AAA games on the new consoles at launch"
from here:
http://www.gamesindustry.biz/content_page.php?aid=7480

Regardless of exchange rates the UK usually has to pay a direct transfer of this price into pounds.

I won't be paying £50-60 for ONE game. Will anyone? Mugs I suppose.
(Although, If Killzone2 plays like it looks in the video I may be unable to resist being a mug too... )

I really can't see the average parent shelling out £400+ for a console for their kids. (Plus £50-60 per game) Or can noone say "no" to their kids anymore?

I heard 360 games were to be £60 - seems a bit extreme?

I'm very confident that most games will be the usual £40, which always seems to get scaled down to £30 online.

On the Revolution:

People in the Indiegamer forums have said that Nintendo said (in an indirect way) that indie developers would be allowed to create games for the revolution, for download on the big online store with the rest of their catalogue. That would be pretty cool.

On the PS3:

If you've seen the pics, I think you'll recognise the font on the console... In my opinion it is definitely the font used in the Spiderman films. Coincidence? Or some sort of linkage between the console and superheroes, so you think it is 'super'...

Here's hoping!

Quote: "Freedom of design: A dynamic development architecture equally accommodates both big-budget, high-profile game “masterpieces” as well as indie games conceived by individual developers equipped with only a big idea. "

David T, they're opening up WarioWare to the world.
The site (even the DNS currently) has gone down while it is being redesigned.

They're adding support for all of thier legacy systems as well as thier current systems as well as thier own versions of popular tools to allow independant developers to create software that if it meets thier approval will be sold on thier variation of the Direct2Drive system from GameSpy.

This will certainly stand as a landmark in Nintendo history. Thier last generation allowing 3rd party developers was really a step forward, yet thier prices kept all but the top-end development companies away.

The future's bright, the future is in the hands of a short fat plummer from the Bronx.
