Just watched the first few hours of this live webcast from Google HQ - fascinating stuff.

They've gone to lunch now but are back in an hour with some more tech stuff.

http://www.google.com/press/factorytour.html

Some guy asked how many servers they had They wouldn't say, but they have 4 CPU servers (with LARGE amounts of ram), 20 servers per rack, and the last released figure (a few years old) was that they had over 10,000 racks - the most interesting part they announced in the webcast was that they self-build every single one!

Anyway am going back on in an hour to see the rest of the talk, it's way cool - if you try it pick the low-res version regardless what connection you have, there are so many people viewing it the high res one breaks out loads.

The times are Pacific Standard Time which is GMT -8 I think.

I just tuned back in and they're on a break so I guess it should be the Future Directions talks next which are the ones I want to see the most, especially Sergy Brin and the QA session with him and Eric after that - they'll be the most fascinating parts, I sure hope I didn't miss them.

Finally payback for all the times I get messed up with GMT.

Thanks for the heads-up Rich. It was very interesting, and helped pass the time at work today.

I liked the gmail segment. Althugh I'm still nervous about the fact they they can parse through all of your e-mail in order to advertise to you. There are definately some friends of mine who I can not give my gmail account to.

Heaven only knows what Google would think I am interested in??????

I just tested out the personal homepages.. works quite nicely.. it's not earth shattering, but it won't hurt to have it appear under my search box without taking over the whole damn page.. cool.

They said it had some drag and drop feature...but when I tried it out, I saw nothing of the sort. What did I miss?

hmm...i got FF too, do I have to activate it(google desktop) somehow?
