The new Netscape 8 Web Browser is now out - looks like I'll be dumping Firefox, and use that instead...

What!! Netscape is very poor compared to FF - and Ntscp. uses the FF rendering engine (gecko) anyway!

As I said before it uses part Firefox, part Internet Explorer - get a lot more security features that with either
It's also very fast...

No actually, the Firefox technology was in development before Netscape allowed there browser to become Open-source (thats when Mozilla picked it up and rewrote it). Gecko was an underlying feature that was part of the RHUNIX login-screen, and was developed to show simple HTML (which was used in the loginscreen)

It was eventually developed into a fully-fledged rendering engine, and was slowly picked-up for the Netscape project.

Mozilla is was the Codename for Netscape.

Netscape is great (and will probably get Netscape 8 pretty soon), but anything beats AOL.

There's no way Netscape can actually share IE code - IE is closed source and I doubt MS would ever release the code for it, especially for use in Netscape! Plus NS8 is open source on certain platforms, so that'd be like giving parts of IE code away. But I'm sure it takes quite a few UI/functionality influences from it. Virtually same rendering engine as FF (cheers Gecko) but the NS8 interface is nice for sure.. good anti-phishing tools as well! Still a bit too bloated for my liking though.

Depends how you look at it.

Elite Forces, and Return to Castle Wolfenstien are seperate products to Quake 3.

But it's the same deal.. they're not NEW products, they're just modifications.
Sweet Jesus, Half-Life is just Quake ... sure over 50% of the code is replaced by Valve, but it is STILL Quake underneath all of the modifications.

Yeah.. FireFox is such a major difference from Mozilla. Sorry, but FireFox is almost literally just a minimalised version of Mozilla, with a more user-friendly front.
Sure they fix bugs in the release, but in-turn bugs fixxed from FireFox is added to Mozilla.

The name isn't FireFox.. It's MOZILLA FireFox. And for good reason.

nah.. it's a different team who develop upon the Mozilla standard, it's like a division of the Mozilla Foundtion; both projects run parallel.

same goes for Netscape, it's still Mozilla just with a different name.

I think FireFox is used more because people like to know that it's "more" enhanced by the users, rather than the development team. So Linux developers and Windows contributers feel they have more power over the direction of it. A very good system if you ask me.

I had a go at netscape 8 just for a laugh, and it was pretty cool. I liked the idea of switching between IE and Firefox rendering because some sites don't work with FF very well.

But, I then found that the firefox extensions I've come ot love over the years won't work on netscape, neither will the themes.

So, back to FF for now!

Even IE uses the mozilla engine (probably not the same version as FF).

Quote: "Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows NT 5.1; SV1; .NET "

and I assume this is FF:

Quote: "Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.7.2) Gec"

Actually that's something that confuses me Dave, because every browser when you JavaScript it appears to callback 'Mozilla' as the browser type.

I have a feeling it's because JavaScript was developed by Netscape, as such it was only expected to be used in Netscape. But that's mearly an educated guess.

Never tried JScript to see if it calls back the same results.

http://webtips.dan.info/brand-x/useragent.html

Quote: "Netscape has always used "Mozilla" as its name in these strings, but many other browsers "lie" and also identify themselves as "Mozilla", something that got established a few years ago because the other browser makers wanted to get through browser-identifiers on sites that disabled Netscape-specific enhancements when any other browser was being used. So they identified themselves as Mozilla/2.0 (compatible; RealBrowserName) -- even though they weren't always truly compatible with Netscape. One of the browsers doing this was MSIE, which used strings like Mozilla/2.0 (compatible; MSIE 2.0). When MSIE got enough market share to be the "browser to imitate" by many of the Brand X's, you started seeing strings like Mozilla/3.0 (compatible; MSIE 3.0; RealBrowserName), which is pretending to be MSIE pretending to be Netscape."

Some sites don't work in Explorer, some don't in Mozilla, all work in Opera.

the choice would be simple if Opera didn't cost so damn much.

@ Jeku

I have rather a few

ieveiw - Open pages in IE via Firefox Menus
FlashGot - Enable Firefox to handle enhanced downloads (I'm using GetRight with it)
ForcastFox - Puts weather information into my menu bar
MediaPlayerConnectivity - Lets you watch movies that are inbedded into the web page in an external Videa Player
SmoothScroll - Better Scrolling
Clone Window - When you press 'new tab' or 'new window', it will create a clone of the current tab/window
FoxyTunes - Lets you control Real player, Windows Media Player, and others in the firefox menu bars
SessionSaver - lets you back up sessions (eg. tabs, history, etc...)
Allow Right-Click - allows you to right-click in sites where you aren't normally allowed to
Favicon Picker - lets you change the image that accompanies a bookmark
Scrollbar Anywhere - lets you scroll the page as you would if you were dragging the scrollbar, but anywhere on the page (ie. using the right-mouse button)
All-in-One Gestures - let's you scroll tabs using mouse-wheel, use rockers (ie. press left-button then right-button on mouse to go to next tab), and have a better scrolling system.
Tab Mix - let's you customise tabs
Adblock - let's you block ads easily and effectively.
search button - puts a search button after hte search box (for opening searches in new or current tab)
NoScript - stops javascript from running from just any website, you have to allow it for each URL (like adblock)
Minimize to Tray - lets you minimise firefox windows to the tray, so a window is always loaded, equals faster loading times.

Have fun!

ieveiw / explorer has
FlashGot / explorer has without the plug-in
ForcastFox / explorer has, but displays it from the sidebar
MediaPlayerConnectivity / explorer has
SmoothScroll / ? i've never understood these, i seem to have always had the abilities with both mozilla and explorer without them
Clone Window / explorer has this
FoxyTunes / firefox only, but foxy isn't the best variation of this. and tbh why would you need it? winamp/itunes/mediaplayer all minimise to small bars
SessionSaver / explorer has this
Allow Right-Click / as such your side-tracking the work someone put into protecting the media on thier site.. but that said if you hover you mouse in Explorer the disable right-click doesn't disable the image/media icons
Favicon Picker / pretty frivilous update
Scrollbar Anywhere / why would you need that with a 3button mouse?
All-in-One Gestures / it's nice, but hardly productive yet. try nvidia's nview gestures, and you'll see what i mean
Tab Mix / meh
Adblock / windows service pack 2 and the toolbar add this to explorer
search button / explorer can search from the sidebar, or from the address box .. i can't stand how firefox you HAVE to use the search box, and it's set to google as standard.
NoScript / explorer has has this for over a decade
Minimize to Tray / :-\ explorer still loads fast from icon

No you don't have to it'll search from the address bar too; and you can change google to something else.

I don't think you know what you're talking about here. Adblock doesn't touch popup windows. What it does is it removes image and flash ads from the websites themselves. Entirely another dimension of sanitizing the internet (and socially unacceptable according to many, but I love it anyways).

whenever i use the address bar it simply takes me to the website that it thinks was most likely my first choice.

bloody annoying.. especially as THAT is powered by google too.

Cheers Bouncy Brick, and that worked for a couple of extensions, but then it decided to delete them all, then I tried installing some other extensions and they didn't work at all.

I think I'll just have to use firefox, and make do with the occasionally misrendered page or two, for which i have 'ieview' (to view in IE from context mnu).

Cheers!

BTW, for anyone wishing to try out the method described in bouncy brick's link, download the .xpi extension file, then change its extension to .zip, then edit the install.rdf file inside it. After you've tinkered, save the file and put it into the .zip file, then rename the file back to a .xpi file.

edit: Just read your post Tesio, and you're right. IE does have quite a lot of functionality (although I never really explored it much), but I just prefere the look and feel to firefox, as well as the security. And I think jackass is a bit OTT, seeing how I was just trying to help Bouncy Brick.

nuke anything removes any object from the page, usefull for quickly removing flashing adds stuck in the middle of paragraphs.

flash block replaces flash content with a button. Press the button if you want to see the falsh. Usefull since most flash is annoying ads.

See those back and forward items in the context menu? People use those to navigate jackass.
Stopping right clicks does nothing to protect media and just annoys people who use the context menu for legitimate reasons.

:-\ actually, you have a point. and honestly I don't remember typing that word. in-fact what has me a little baffled is it's completely out of place in the sence as well as being a word i rarely if ever use.

yes, but those people are a minority.. use the menu buttons or mouse gestures like everyone else and stop complaining.
