ok my gpc(generic pc) is screwing up
i havent attached my monitor to it yet but i know its unresponsive because the num lock and such keys wont change and the leds dont say that the hdd is busy and the floppydisk does not do a bootcheck(where it makes that sound when u first boot
umm and well the case ummm lets just forget about the case theres nothing wrong with it because it does not exist
my motherboard is on a peice of paper cause i dont have a case that it will fit in so i took off the front panel of another case so i have a reset button and leds

a pic of my "case" is attached
btw yes the white stuff is paper

so does anyone know what could be wrong

duh?

plug in monitor?
mount in case? (earth terminals are actualy there for a reason)
actualy read up on things you shouldn`t do when building a system?
like placing a motherboard on a nylon carpet?
leaving loads of conductive metal cases in a heap?
antistatic precautions?
installed memory correctly?
plugged switch cables onto correct pins?
read motherboard manual?

and how on earth you expect any degree of success working in such a mess escapes me, I actualy flinched when I saw that photo, waste of some good hardware a charity shop could have made use of <jk>, dunno whats wrong with it though, not the sort of thing thats easy to fix over the internet, at a guess something is plugged in incorrectly or you just zapped it to death with all the static you made running about and climbing over it .

I had the exact same problem. Turned out my AGP slot on the board was defective.

It's M-E-G-A-T-O-N. NOT MEGATRON.

Could be your RAM is not well plugged in. Take it out and put it back in. If that doesn't work, disasemble the whole thing and try again.

How about getting a case? How are you even managing to turn it on without the connectors from the power switches of a case?

Get one from ComputerGeeks, they're pretty cheap.

Beeps will come out with no speakers and a long neverending one will come out if no ram, have you checked what that random cord going off to the side does?

As long as you have a static free enviroment, your fine without the case. I've run a computer with out a case for about 2 weeks cause the case was on backorder and I really wanted to use my new toys.

If you dont have onboard graphics then it wont work until you put a gcard in.
you may need to reset your bios.
if you have installed windows xp on a different computer then put the hdd in that computer it wont work.

Any spelling mistakes are totally In tensional.

Listen to the beeps and take note of how many. Go to your motherboards website to see what it means. Most of the time it is due to loose ram or a loose video card though. I would completely disassemble the PC and rebuild checking all connections for tightness and cleanliness.

I'm sure you can find a speaker somewhere to put into it. Almost all MB's have a plug for it.

things in the past i have experienced a pc to not boot up:

not having Ram plugged in correctly
not having the CPU fan plugged in (CPU protection thingy on my motherboard)
a loose molex or other power connection.

ok thats the only few things i can remember.

you might need to plug the pic speaker in, since motherboards will have a sound warning system being a combination of beeps which you can check in the manual telling you what they mean.

He probably already fried his mobo if he hears a weird humming sound when he turns it on then just touch it i promise you won't live to tell about it.

But setting it on paper wtf is this a damn joke? its gotta be a joke. I mean seriously is this a joke?! i once set my mobo on some antistatic plastic you know the stuff it comes in and turned it on. Needless to say it didnt work THANK YOU TECH SUPPORT! it costed me a few too for that mobo so i was pissed but i'v learned don't listin to tech support!

the humming noise might just be the PSU or a fan or the hard drives whirring
