about 2 months ago i ran system restore on my computer (hopefully you all know what that is if you dont then well ill tell you it sets all your info back to factory settings but still keeps all your files) anyway i ran that and after i did that this little icon appeared donw at my clock (im using win XP) and these things poped up and they were add new hard ware (i didnt install any new hard ware) and i had to go through EVERY SINGLE CARD, USB, MOTHER-BOARD AND DRIVE ONE BY ONE until it was finished. BUT while they were getting installed during half of it, it asked me if i wanted to continue installation??? of course i do! but the reason is that, it said that was becuase it didnt pass windows logo testing? so i clicked continue it was all done but then i remeberd i still had directX 8.0, so i typed on over to microsoft.com and downloaded directX9.0C and when i ran installation, during half of it it said that this program did pass logo testing and that setup will now close! i typed straight on over to support at microst.com and they reply with me to give more detail so i did i sent them a photo of it and they havent replyed back since then that ALL happend in 3 days or so. so basicly im stuck with a computer that CAN"T UPGRADE ANYTHING! please give any help on what i should do BESIDES throwing away my computer. 1. it has VERY important files on it that CANT be deleted (by law) and 2. i like my computer!!

well, your pretty much screwd. that happend to my burning peice of crap known as compaq. if you can afford to do this, switch to linux. free, fun, and the penguin is da bomb.

no maybe i wrote it wrong well i didnt but its 9.0c and no it didnt install succesfully it said "this program has not passed windows logo testing, setup will now CLOSE" key word there is close but anyway it didnt even get half way until it said that so please ANY help would be nice

you don't know what linux is. omg. sorry not trying to make you feel like a n00b, linux is the open source operating system. kind of like having web page that any one can edit, delete, or add to it in what ever way they want to. firefox is open source, and wikipedia. linux, because it is open source, means it is free(not including dounloading costs on your interenet bill). I recomend using a linux cd boot, basically it is a cd that when you put it in during boot, will boot off the disk installing nothing onto the computer. basicaly a OS on a disk. if the computer your using has a fast connection, and a cd burner that can burn .iso your good to go. www.knoppix.org is the best cd boot. but the file is 699mb so it will take a day to download. once your set with that you can access you hd to recover the data and email it to your self or burn it to a cd if there is a extra cd drive

so let me get this straight i have a fast connection (dsl) and i have a cd burner and i go to that website and i download that hugely massive program (699 mb) to fit on a 700 mb cd and i pop that cd in while i start up my computer. but 2 questions, what happends to my computer? and can i delete that 699 mb file once i have it on a disk?

you can delet the iso from your computer after you burn the iso. make sure you burn the image (.iso) instead of draging it into a cd-data disk. normally, this is called "burning a cd image" like if you back up a cd but don't want it every were you would make a iso. or if you backed up a audio cd, so you wouldn't half to re enter all of the track names and to avoid cd protection. nothing will happen to your pc after using this (hopefully ), but the pc is pretty screwed. *bill gates laughing in corner of a room*, just make sure the bios of the pc allows you to boot from a cd. if the pc came with 2000, or xp it should work (expecialy xp). one thing you half to take in acount for is that nfts can't be writen in with linux because it isn't open scource. fat or fat32 can, so if you have fat or fat32 hd your golden. if you have nfts you can only read, no writing. if there are certain thing you want to do but don't have root access in knoppix (such as writing a file in fat32) look at www.knoppix.net a very good beginner site with form, and documentation to get root access

actually my main hd is nfts but my system recovery is fat32 (hehe FAT) and my system recovery hd only holds about 2 gb so yeah im pretty much screwed. and by the way my pc didnt even come with any cds it was a refurb from a website.

well, go out to a store, get cd-r's. if the pc your using dosn't have a cd burner, go get an external one.

the blind leading the blind sometimes. dont bother with linux if you want to continue using DB. Its not fully compatible yet.
try linux as an experience but buy a 2nd hard drive to place it on instead of dual booting.

If no-one gives your an answer to a question you have asked, consider:- Is your question clear.- Did you ask nicely.- Are you showing any effort to solve the problem yourself

well most of it is music it holds a small 33 gb but about a 5%of that is important

I say use knoppix, and if there is a cd burner available, burn all the crusial stuff to a cd, then worry about the music. get a 40gig external hd, format it to fat32, and copy everything over in knoppix. or go to a computer repair shop

Indeed, do not attempt to use Knoppix if you don't know what you're doing, it can seriously mess up the MBR (Master Boot Record).

Also, you can say goodbye to DB and most games out there.

You will only stop playing the unimportant games. All the good games have linux ports or run in wine(Unreal, Unreal Tournament, Unreal Tournament 2004).

Knoppix and other linux versions usually spit out something along the lines of Warning: Kernel Panic; your current operation may fatally corrupt your MBR (Taint.o)

It isn't very hard to miss. Most people have one bad experience with Linux, and give up. They tell everyone else that its 'dangerous' and 'bad'; but everyone has had at least one bad experience with Windows or Mac OS?

I believe all this partial hatred is due to most people being afraid, and unable to dive into the void. I did this 2 years ago, and I installed Red Hat Linux 9. I've never had any real problems with it, apart from keeping it up to date. (Latest wine build needs 19 other dependencies, which I need to find and download by myself )

use knoppix not for installation, just use it to find the important stuff, and if you can fix the pc. don't install yet, recover the stuff before you try to recover the os
