Here is the latest ill-informed BBC press article about the Elgin Marbles.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/entertainment/4580011.stm

As usual with the media, kindly ignore their ignorant and misconceived "commentary" on English law. Every single comment they make is wrong.

It is for the Trustees of the Elgin estate, applying the will of Lord Elgin and the trust set up thereby, to determine to whom the Marbles shall be lent. The British Museum and indeed Lord Goldsmith (merely the Attorney General - big fat hairy deal) are utterly and completely irrelevant. They can merrily decide that the Marbles should be returned to Greece. Yet they do not have ownership of the Marbles. So it matters not what they decide. They could no more validly and legally decide to transfer ownership of the Marbles to Greece anymore than I could, for example, choose to give ownership of Rich Davey's house to RobK.

Nemo dat quod non habet.

The media, in its usual breathless incompetence, makes me sick. To think they fill the minds of people with such crap.

Philip

PS: Oh, and THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS BRITISH LAW. Can the BBC get NOTHING right? There is the law of England and Wales. There is the law of Scotland. There is the law of Northern Ireland. British law does not exist. UK law does not exist.

Media stupidity is something that peeves a lot of us. I sympathise

Personally I've been gritting my teeth every time I hear a reporter refer to the use of a filibuster for judicial nominees as part of the checks and balances, when the checks and balances have never had anything to do with the senate in the first place.

Not to sidetrack the topic - that little ruccus has been defused now anyway.

One wonders if the situation will ever improve.

The bloody Beeb are at it again.

We have to pay for the BBC, in the form of a license fee, and then it starts screwing up like this, it REALLY irritates me.

Not nitpicking, just a question...if a law is the same in England, Wales and Scotland, does that make it British Law?

Next: Does JellyStone Park have it's own law, or is it part of a wider-ranging area?

On a more serious note, I haven't followed this story, what's the significance? It's obviously put a bee in your honey

I think its because of the incorrect reporting, especially over facts of law...

Ergo, what the the BBC is reporting is false...

Thus they cant be trusted to report the news properly

Thus it would be easier to get a bunch of monkeys to report the news. Unfortunately they all work for Channel 5...

The laws and leniences are different depending on what part of blighty your from - for instance...

In England if you have debts, a-holes come along to your house and take your stuff.
In Scotland they take you to court and arrest your wages instead.

I know your frustration Philip - I can't even read newspapers these days without getting irritated. I'm like most people and can't stand being condescended, by whatever media source, but it must be said that the British tabloid press and the BBC's news team should be driven into the forest and put to death. Sensationalism sells papers, facts are those things they hope nobody knows about.

In England your debts can certainly be seized by creditors. The Court has jurisdiction to make what used to be called a garnishee order (nowadays called a Third Party Debt Order) over a debt owed by a third party. This obliges that third party to pay the debt owed directly to the judgment creditor.
