Hello,

I am wanting to make special effects for my films.

I want to make something like a glowing ball forms in someone's hand or a glowing aura around them.

Is there any way to do this with software?

I've tried googling and i found some software but I don't wanna go and download everything not knowing how good it is.

Is there any good software for what I want to do? If there is can I have a link?

Thank you

Peace

How do you think 99% of special effects are added? If you want depth and interactivity, you do it in a 3D modelling and animation package.

Particle illusion is also very good, as Vulcan says. The effects are fantastic, although it's harder to do depth, and not possible to do layering without a lot of messing with the video footage.

No, you do it with a movie editors, there are a lot of softwares for that
the most professional ones are AffterEffects, Premiere, FinalCut Pro and some others
but here are a few cheaper solusion
EffectsLab - 50-64 Euro - Special Effect editor, it is a good editor but they are still
building it, in the near futher there will be more effects, I plan to buy it soon.
Chromanator - 50 Euro - movie editor for greenscreen, lightning and stuff check the tutorial section.
VideoMach - $30 - very simple movie editor.

Deibiddo - Pinnacle Studio 9 is pretty good and comes with loads of effects. It's a bit unstable though, so unless you've got a rock solid very powerful PC I would avoid it.

VirtualDub can perform basic video effects but is better for video cutting, splicing, conversion, etc and it's free (and VERY fast to use!).

All of the top-end packages cost hundreds (if not thousands) to buy though.. if you've got a Mac then your choice is greater, programs like Motion and Motion 2 are stunning (and very cheap), but you can jump to the other end of the cost spectrum and get Final Cut, etc.

Just looking at the Effects Lab demo reel now - very impressive! Thanks for the link Renegade.

Yes, you can edit frame by frame... Export every frame of the original, no effected scene as a high res, high quality bitmap, (this is what I do in Studio 9) and then Paint Shop Pro! Reintroduce said frames as full screen titles in Studio 9, render as an AVI and then pull it back in as the finished scene.

Laborious, but it works.

Yes Rich, Studio 9 is the most unstable piece of sh*t ever. As for the effects, there are none unless you pay for them. I've unlocked 6 of the effects packs and upgraded to Plus! for just under £200 - if you're serious though, don't go for Studio 9 - it's all pretty and no stability.

A few other things about EffectLab
it's on sale untill the 30th of june, 50 Euro instead of 64 Euro.
The older version was called AlamDV2 and this is the plugin page
they plan to make all those plugins available to EffectsLab.

final cut pro / maya and motion with shake would be an awesome complimentary set of tools for professional effects.

after effects would also allow you to create spfx.

It's good to know the George Lucas is the only person that makes movies
plus usually the simple people don't have the cash to buy
Maya ($2700 last time I checked) and other high-end softwares.
There is a major diffrence between inserting some models to a movie
to create visual effects, for inserting models you do need to use
some sort of modeling package but for effects you don't have to.

mayas z dimension is carried natively into final cut pros video, they both share the same file format! wicked if you paid attention to that, so you can create a z dimension order of objects within your scene and allow your parts of the video to appear to be behind components and in front of other components.

editing video on the mac using final cut pro is like working with a 3d openGL panel, this is why a lot of the features allow for realtime updating as its utilising the macs GPU to handle the effects. this is why also its possible to register the Z dimension for components in your movie allowing for amazing composition of 3d and video and 2d elements.

adobe after effects on the mac and pc will produce great effects for the cost of the product and allow for rotoscoping etc in the later builds. v6 and up i think has this feature.
