Grid theory help?

Ok well I must first say Hi, I’m new to the forums and have been looking up and down them a lot for a week or so now. I plan on programming a small game for my mates and myself to play each other with. If you can imagine it its sorta a 2d grid based system as in many squares each containing a unit or object and they may move through out the grid. If any one has played Heroes of Might and magic 2 or the very old shining force games it’s basically the same concept, or I guess it bears some resemblance to chess. Each unit takes a turn to move up and down left and right etc etc etc

But there is one major block I just can’t get passed… I really don’t get how to use a gird is used in BDPro =( I understand the whole X, Y, (Z) axis deal as I’ve had to do many mathematically crap years at high school… I really just fail to see how it can be used inside dark basic and how to make my characters move with in…

Eg (“Enter battle, Grid is drawn over a bitmap background, Units may pass over squares or attack other units in these squares”) I can program everything else… But for some reason I’m just not getting this Tile system thing…

I’m sorry if I sound a bit vague, but I really just don’t get it. Any helpful links or suggestions please =)
