Its just this renegade 12345 moron who keeps posting forums, deliberately to wind people up and not contribute a sausage to the community.

There is other rubbish that gets posted as well, but if you act like the kind of person that is at home in this kind of community then you dont really have any problems. I certainly dont have any problems with the mods, they do their job well and are liberal.

We just got hit by a bout of spamming...

We're on top of it ( obviously, otherwise these threads wouldn't be locked ), so no need to worry

If people judge this forum by the nonsense that often goes on in Gen' Disc' then we have problems. However, the fact that these inflammatory threads are all locked up and sinking into the oblivion of page 2 should be a good sign, like that there's mod's here dealing with the nonsense quickly.

It's fairer to lock threads than delete them because at least then the sensible users posts aren't affected - at the end of the day, the recent influx of crud starts out as crud, it's not like we're locking useful threads that have been infected with this stuff. You might notice the destinct lack of 'flamebait' tags, which IMO look far worse than the cute little padlocks.

They need a thread of shame as a sticky so people like Renegade 12345 get their name added by a mod everytime they start a stupid thread.

It called be called "What is the point of Renegade 12345" as he had said about Play Basic. But then again, if that was the title of the thread it would probably be empty.

Simple... yet fun!

I feel just the opposite. Not enough locked threads... Not enough Slaps... Too many warnings... Too much eagerness to help people who show no effort etc....

The forum seems to be under attack from useless postings. And if it were just the Gen Disc. Board, I might be able to stomach it. But unfortunately some of the nonsense has trickled it's way across the Forum.

I think we are being to lax here, and we are sending the wrong message to newcomers. IMHO many of the recent threads are at an all time low. Countless meaningless headings such as "Plz Help!!", you know the routine.

Even that can be tolerated to a point. But most disturbing of all, is the attitudes "by the people asking for help" towards established forum users "Who are trying to help them". A recent poster even went as far as to attempt to go toe-to-toe with Rich. To me, this is completely unacceptable.

I understand that sometimes posters are younger, foreign language etc.. That's fine. Here we don't discriminate based on age. But it goes both ways. So I'm not going to be all PC and "Barney-like" when someone throws attitude and a hissy fit. I'm not going to help them any further, and I am going to let them know why.

We do a great injustice by not letting them know how they are coming across. It's not about just looking to flame someone. But when someone shows a complete lack of common courtesy, they are going to hear it.

HaHa! Go zenassem! You have a completely valid point. Most of us would like to help, but don't because of the overflow of rudeness/attitude...

I never mind helping people on the forums. Even if they don't say "thank you", as rude as it is, I usually make a tutorial from whatever I helped them with and put it on my site. Then I get tons of thank yous.

The thing that does bother me, is when people bug me constantly on MSN asking me to teach them how to do something, or help their friend out. If I do help them and they decide not to say thank you, it results in a BLOCK.

I too was getting to a point where I was afraid to help someone. Heaven forbid you make one mistake, and there ready to rip you an arse and disregard all the effort you put in. People can't even be bothered to look the code over to see if it's caused by a typo.

It's not like we are technical support. Nor are any of us getting paid to help someone. We are just generally trying to help a fellow user who is facing problems that we ourselves once faced. And maybe someone helped us, so now we are trying to return the favor. Usually it feels good to help someone out (even without a thanks, as mentioned above).

But man, what a kick in the teeth it is to get blasted when trying to help!!! Even more nauseating is when its because the original poster failed to mention a key point.

I'm still going to offer help in the areas I can. But not to someone who totally disrespects myself or another member of the forum. case closed.

I guess you could say I have my own mental padlock! (In the form of a nice database list of disrespectful users.)

You know how posts have to be approved by a moderator to appear and this lasts for a set number of days. The same thing should apply to starting threads but this should take about 5 times to expire. Once they've gained the privilage of automatically approved threads, a bad thread should result in losing this privilage and threads requiring approval again. I know it'll be a bigger strain on the mods, but its just a suggestion.

Simple... yet fun!

I'm sure the forum would be a better place if we let all the braindead, shiteating spammer tools have their way with a forum that's intended for intelligent and constructive discussion.

Sure.

I'm also sure there's absolutely no irony in the fact that the only people who complain are people who have formerly been warned for starting fights and complaining about how their products don't get enough free publicity.

Absolutely sure.

@robo cat,

It's a good idea, and I agree. Something akin to that was discussed here a long time ago... (unfortunatley it was not implemented)

All newcomers would not be able to start their own threads until they reached a number of post counts. Obviously the problem is monitoring those posts to see if they should be validated as a contribution.

After so many posts, they earn the right to post threads.

I think the search forum would see a great increase in usage!

I belong to forums like this, and it does generally work. But it can be frustrating for someone who has a legit question. And not all newcomers are the problem.

=====

One thing I would suggest is upon account creation forcing people to read the AUP and "How to Post". I would even like to see them pass a "simple" test on basuc forum usage.

If someone can't be bothered to do that, what is the likelyhood that they will make a positive contribution here.

Again... unfortunately it's not likely to happen.

But I can still dream!

It's a resonable idea. Thing is it'll just make more people complain about censorship and their 'rights' (to anyone who has a clue how the internet and privately owned sites work, that's obviously a complete joke). We already get enough complaints about post approval as it is, despite the fact that it's stopped a whole lot of crap from getting through.

@Mouse,

You are a MOD. And that should be enough. You shouldn't be concerned with answering to every whiner about how to run the forum. The MODs are actually too nice, and do to much back-bending, IMHO.

You all have been given certain abilities because you have earned them, and are regarded as having the ability to use discretion; by the people that matter.

Any over-reaching of "power" is handled by higher powers, and discussion with other MODs.

IMO, the structure of the forum collapses when everyone thinks they have a right to go one-on-one with a MOD.

It's nice that alll of you generally choose to respond to criticism; but it's just not warranted in every case.

So for all tense and purposes, I shouldn't be typing this!

I got MSN'ed a couple of nights ago. As soon as I gave them the answer they were looking for, they blocked me!!!!

Ticket marked, along with a few others. Personally I'd like to see a "Hide User's Posts". The user would also get to see a "12 users have blocked your messages".

hhmm...this would be nice...but it would be good if it would show something so you know that they had a post there (otherwise it might get confusing for you to not see their posts...especially if you block more then one person)

so maybe in place of there post it would show you something like "<insert username here>'s post."

something you could have is a warning system that is visible

and then have a list of all the banned people on a page with a reason for why they were banned as well as their email address so if they got banned for hurling abuse we can send them an email hurling abuse

btw that was a joke, but the visible warning system would be a good idea

I think we need a background system
see sorta like a prison sentence
when a person gets banned(or even a thread locked) they get a reason a rating on how bad the damage was and depending on that how long it is until they are unbanned and put on probation or n00b slap then if they even attempt to do anything bad(make a bad post that did not go through) they would most likely get banned again
also have a report to mod button where u can report a user to the mod and if its legit then the user could get a virtual "mark" 5 marks or so gets n00b slapped 10 marks gets banned (5 and 10 is just for example)
also i think tgc should come up with a test on "Good Forum Behaviour"
and if they fail then they have to wait at least 2 days before they can attempt to sign up again

anyway thats my idea and yes i know i skipped a few details but hey! get creative

i like your creativity ermes but i dont follow your jaded attitude and remarks to this forum.
you were once a member here (still on occasion) and showed that it was possible to make your creativity shine through, however the trolling about the procedures here make you look a little silly and for those of us who are old in the tooth, shows the ugly side of ermes

It defeats the purpose of the forums to show a negative side. perhaps you lack the inter-personal communication skills to let things slide and see things as what they are.

anyway good to see you again but leave the tude at the door and create another cool game so we can see the result of good work.

If no-one gives your an answer to a question you have asked, consider:- Is your question clear.- Did you ask nicely.- Are you showing any effort to solve the problem yourself

oh thanks indi, i'm pleased you like my works.
What about my "ugly side", well i'm not like the most of you and i've my own ideas on some things around here, but for shure i can write and talk of my ideas.
Otherwise, if i can't do that, it's the evidence this forum isn't free.
Yes i know, we have rules. rules are maked to be broked.
My idea is no locked threads but threads evidenced with a sign indicate TGC don't agree with the post contents. and stop.

And another things, for all of you, don't forget i'm from italy and i'm writing and reading a foreign language. What is "old in the tooth?" i can't understand the most of your slang here....

By the way, no new games already, just making tools to design tracks (for racing game) with a new collision system for a game ispired to LE MANS championship. But it will take a long time. And this will be a freeware project.

Stay well.

You mean nobody else can see those forum guidelines!, that's why nobody follows them, they're all in our minds.

Ermes, I don't know what you expect from us, you seem to like comming along just to critisize. That attitude of yours that seems to work so well on planet Ermes is not compatible here, long in the tooth or not - you should know better. Personally, if I did'nt like a forum I just would'nt visit it, trolling it might give you some jaded sense of justice - but then there's only so much trolling that one can do.

If you don't agree with the policy here and can't stay within the guidelines, then go and make your own forum where you can be as big a jerk as you like.

Is it usually when you complain about the rules that this happens?

I can see how that would be.

Ermes,
With the respect you have here I just don't understand why you have this attitude. You might not see it, but your posts often sound quite arrogant. This is not the attitude that you started with mate. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, everone is entitled to disagree, and often it's a choice between locking, or letting someone get roasted with flames. We all know what does more damage in the long run.

You forget all the work is done behind the scenes, however much you'd like to think the opposite, I think mods have better things to do then say: "ooh, leys has posted again, let's go lock his thread/delete his post".

The problem is, most people can't seem to accept that some people differ in opinion in what is right or wrong from others. The mods have the advantage they can enforce their opinion. Live with it.
