Sony released an official kit for it, no reason to 'mod'
The official release of Linux on the Playstation (which is now only available in Europe) is pretty static. You can't make your system into a Server, you can't use it to do much actually.
It's really just word processing, internet browsing, etc..
This was part of Sony's failed attempt to get the PS2 classed as a computer, and if you purchase the PS2 with Linux on it; then to a limited effect they got thier wish.
You have a CD, so if you bugger anything up you throw in the disc and it'll correct your mistakes by reinstalling everything. I've been told the new PS2 Slim version runs purely from CD now, but that you need a 16MB (or 2x 8MB) Memory Card in order to use it.
I got one for my brother, but on the whole it seems pointless. It's not even exactly quick. Feels like using Linux on a 486.
