Ok,
A number of the people whom I know have told me to stop playing Counter Strike Source and play Counter Strike 1.6.

I ask my buddies well how do I do that and they tell me it comes with steam.

I say well my steam doesn't have it and then they think I'm crazy.

Is Counter Strike 1.6 legally free? Sites on google claim its free. I download the Counter Strike 1.6 Cache file which is a .gcf file. My problem is, how do I load it in steam?

On my games list I only have:
Codename Gordon
Half Life 2
Counter Strike Source
Team Deathmatch 2

How do I add Counter Strike 1.6 to that list. I have the neccessary .gcf cache file but yet I cant seem to get Steam to acknowledge I have it.

I feel like I am taking crazy pills. I even download the Steam+CS1.6 file. Nothing.

Give me some tips please. What are my buddies doing that they aren't telling me. What am I doing wrong?

I would appreciate the help.

You can download CS 1.6 for free, if you own Half Life 1, don't think you can get it if you own HL2, unless you got the pack with both HL1 and 2...

It should be on the list as Counter-Strike

It'll be greyed out, just double click and see if it installs it or makes you pay.

See thats what my buddies say to me.

The list does not have it at all. It is not white and it is not greyed out. How do I get Steam to acknowledge that I have the cache files on my computer so it can make a spot on the list for them?

Or how do I run these cache files without steam?

HUH?

This situation has been discussed before?


If I knew how to manually add the stuff into a file I am sure that would work. I probably need to edit a certain file and add something to tell steam to acknowledge that I have various .gcf files.

Supposively CS 1.6 is freeware and I do legally own Half Life 2, but yet I still can't play the CS 1.6

I have googled this topic and all I get are illegal methods to get it to work which will result in me getting banned. I don't want that. If it has been done before then I am sure I just need the proper instructions.

I think CS 1.6 is free only if you buy half-life 2 silver or gold

or if you have a legit half life 1 cd key.

Actually something I feel is seriously weird about his list is the fact that it has Half-Life: Source as 'Just Released'

Definately doesn't appear like that on my list.
Counter-Strike is free, but what you need to do is access it before Steam will allow you to see it on a new account.

If you had Half-Life (original) then it would automatically be added to the list, but because you only have Half-Life 2; then there is a minor bug that Valve haven't seen fit to correct.

Browse Games > Individual Games, Counter-Strike (original) is about half-way down.

It doesn't really perform much differently to Counter-Strike: Source though, and they're slowly getting all of the old levels done.

This is what your list should look something like, though with a good few more greyed out titles ^_^

if you own half-life 1 you will have access to:

team fortress classic
counter strike
deathmatch classic
day of defeat
codename gordon (maybe a free addon for all?)
ricochet (maybe a free addon for all?)

you need to buy hl opposing force to play that game (standalone game)
you need to buy hl blue shift to play that game (standalone game)

counter strike condition zero is a seperate stand alone counter strike game, this gives you:
Counter-Strike: Condition Zero
Condition Zero Deleted Scenes

if you own HL2 you will get access to:

half-life source
counter strike source
hl2 deathmatch

day of defeat source is still on the coming soon list, dunno if it'll be free for hl2 owners when it's released.

so i think thats how it works. when i first loaded steam in, i put my hl2 key in (after installing from dvd). then my hl1 key, then opposing force key.

my valve folder is 6.78gb, thats without the standalone games of counterstrike condition zero and blue shift. so you need some space if you want to keep all the games on your computer.

also it's recommended to update steam. if hl source has come up just released you havent updated it in a long while (or never).

he probably dont have that version. my guess he picked up the normal copy from the shop. which dont give you access to the back catalogue, even the tin edition in shops dont give back catalogue.

but to cut a long story short, you need HL1 or buy CS condition zero for $14.99 from steam to get CS

And it works fine for me

Only one time have I really had a true problem with it, 1am on Nov. 16 2004. That'd be teh minute HL2 was released and activated for people who bought it online

The impression I get with steam is that they only want you to play their games, which I expect is what they were thinking when they came up with the idea .

Nah.. what they were more likely thinking was, "Vivendi are talking close to 50% of our profits.". Though as far as the community is conserned it was a way of unifying several aspects that traditionally were seperate.

Instant Messenging, Patching, Downloading New Content, Using Modification Games, News, etc..

So you have a number of features that primarily would've ment several sources and much of your time spent downloading or trying to find are moved to one place.

It also adds a much quicker (and from developers perspective atleast) and easier Visual User Interface System.

Steam itself wasn't exactly original, but thier use of it has become very interesting. As with all new technology it had some very major teething problems; but then I'm not sure what can really claim being used on such a wide-scale for the first time, not to suffer from that.

I don't have a problem with steam, it runs with a relatively small footprint, doesn't take up many resources and keeps my stuff up-to-date. So I can just click and play games without worring if I have the right version or having to wait several hours for it to download.
