Wolfgang Gulke, a Nuclear Physicist and Futurist, recently commented in Nexus Magazine how two scientists at Britain's Warwick University have microchips embedded under their skin that allows them to send emails, just by thinking.
He says.. 'The process is still cumbersome but by willing a cursor around a keyboard on a computer screen entirely with their mind, they can send emails. It's really the start of interfacing the microchip with the human nervous system'.

This is kind of old, actually -- we've had technology that can accept 'input' from the human brain for a long time, the problem is adapting the input device to the human brain. I recall reading a while ago about how some disabled people were able to turn lights on and off by thinking through a wireless interface device and a chip in their brain, but they all had to figure out what they had to think to trigger it.

Sounds slow as hell

Nevertheless, it's a very interesting idea, and I'm sure it'll turn into something very useful with time.

However it'll have to really be the bomb before I allow them to stick a chip in me to use it

Mouse,
Yea, you may be missing the point.. in this new research, it's not the brain that is the essential element of achievment, it's the Mind. The brain is an organ that facilitates the will of the mind, like the heart pumps blood.
I can think much faster than I can type so if the microchip can interpret or recognise 'thoughts' then computing goals could become lightning fast.
Training the Mind seems to be the key to such technology.

I think moving the mouse with your eyes would be awesome although to pinpoint it on things could cause problems

hmm and that si very weird
i have no idea how the trigger would work or even how to use it the onyl thing i can do in my MIND alone is do math and think of things(words and pictures)

LOL! If they ever made one of those things I would stay completely away from them... My mind would overload the damn things.

Seriously.. When I'm just sitting there I visualize a series of random numbers letters and thoughts processing through my mind faster than the speed of computers..

Peace

can u make a vision of a dot in less than 5ms or think what 5+5 is in less than 10ms(btw did u know that it is eaiser on the mind to multiply rather than add)

How would you receive data from the "Mind" if the "Mind" is indeed different from the brain? You'd still have to intercept signals from the brain.

Stop being so negative guys

There was this scientist at Warwick university who had a microchip in his skin, but it only hooked into (interesting use of phrase ) the nerves on the arm, so he could only send messages by doing things with his arm.

However if these new devices can actually learn what brainwaves indicate certain commands and execute them, then good for them!

So my code would look something like this

zenassem,
You're right there's a lot of crap going on in our minds which gets in the way, but as anyone who has written an essay knows, you have to clear the mind and then concentrate.
The reason I find this topic interesting is because I meditate regularly (which I can highly recommend for programmers) and in a way, I can see how it can work.
I'd like to be a test subject and give it a try.

Yea, I think the brain is a bit like a telephone exchange or a processing plant, while the mind can range freely or be still depending on conditions and will...

If you finished writing something and decided to check it by reading through it you would be there for days as it would just write it over and over again.

Simple... yet fun!

They make it sound more difficult than it is.. like it's some sort of Mind Trick to get it to work.

Reality is that it has little to do with the mind itself. It connects under the skin in the arm; and all you have to do is move your hand and it works like that.

It's kinda like using a mouse driven keyboard using your fingers to guide the mouse; but not like the whole Minority Report, think of it more as your still typing.

The technology isn't new and has quite a way before it becomes more realistically applicible. Not to mention not many people are going to want to have something surgecally implanted just to use Windows

yea they will probably use linux, say screw that cause they dont understand it, then switch to mac unless they have also done the same thign and in that case some nerd in nevada would build his own computer and it emulate such things and then distribute it using TGC

Raven,
I get the impression that the development has moved on from there. The active ingrediant is Will or Emotion, not hand or arm movement. Hard to believe I know, but as with lie detectors each thought has an emotional response and it is the intensity of these that would be measured and transmitted to the cursor. Like Wolfgang Gulke said 'interfacing the microchip with the human nervous system'.

Placing microchips under the skin is in common practice these days with animals. Where I live, pet owners do it with cats and dogs, so they can keep track of them. It's no big deal, is done in a second and is nothing more than a pinprick.

In times to come probably all babies will have microchips implanted at birth, that way they can be monitored 24 hours a day.

double blink - leave the eye cursor where it is or pick it back up

triple blink - click

Or left and right eye blinks for the clicks, that is a cool idea. Some people might not be able to help clicking on certain links, heheh.

@gbuilder
I understand that point, but how would you intercept what's going on in the mind? If I'm thinking how you're thinking the mind is entirely separate from the electrical signals from the brain, how would it communicated to any device they would implant into you? It's making my brain melt..
