I've been very interested in 'Machinima' lately, looking at their website etc.

But what I don't know is;

@-> What is it actually designed to do? I know it makes movies, but it all seems to be based around games - is it just designed for making game movies?

@-> How on earth do I get it? Is it freeware? Shareware? Commercial?

Ya know, if you were to go to google and type "Machinima" the first 2 results would tell you everything.

Machinima is not a program, but yet a style of film making wihich involves modding games and creating 3d scenes instead of using actors. MTV plays Machinima music videos sometimes.

But still... google is your friend.

Haheh ha....

I'm in a good mood, so I'll just tell you.

Machinima is just a word for videos made using in-game footage, then, in some cases, using voice overs to create something... DIABOLICAL.

Yeah... I thought it was some program. Turns out there are SDK production kits you can download from their site though (can't at the moment though, there server is 'very busy')

you don't need an SDK
all you need is a game engine

:grabs half-life:

this is one valve made earlier
now all you do is quite simply script events.. this is incredibly easy thanks to the QuakeC Scripting (even more so with Cut-Scene BSPs now), and you effectively create cut-scenes like you would if you were making a level.

i mean that's effectively all machinima is.

Red vs Blue, the most popular machinima by far, only uses levels and objects from Halo itself...

Easiest things you can do are with stuff like Half-Life / Half-Life 2.

HL - Milkshape 3D, Worldcraft, Copy of HL
HL2 - Softimage|XSI Exp, Hammer, Copy of HL2

In-fact HL2 has so much in the way of tools to create machinima as standard and free it's a little silly.

Same goes for Unreal 2.x

I made a 10 minute halo movie with voice overs etc... Required a video capture card, microphone, couple of xbox's, couple copies of halo 2, video editing software, controllers and about 55 hours of editing/voice over time...

Total length of movie: 9 minutes and 58 seconds.
Total Hard drive space for movie: 2.8GB's.

Machinima doesn't have to be created using a game engine, but that's certainly the easy way.

Machinima is using computer genrated actors, and is NOT pre-generated. So if you script a game engine, it's not true Machinima. If you have 2 guys with joysticks and a lot of time on their hands...that's machinima.

We tried taking the long way around. We weren't going for a real machinima, just one of those junky videos you see a halo.bungie.org

1. My friend records himself screwing around on Halo 2 to VHS.

2. Brings tape over to my place, we record what VCR plays into DV Recorder.

3. Use USB hook up to get a .mov of the movie from DV Recorder.

4. Convert to .wmv and open in Windows Movie Maker for editing.


At least that's what we would've done. Researched what we needed to buy (mostly the cables and a purchased license for quicktime I think), but didn't get through the whole process.

Pretty much what we did... We went to the store and bought a video capture card(some hauppage one), hooked up one of the xbox's to the capture card on my computer and used that xbox as the "camera". Then we used the other xbox on system link as the "puppets".. Moved them around and captured it with the camera.

I forgot to mention another program... We used Adobe Premiere to edit the video's and have it in order without any crappy stilled scenes.. We used Cool Edit Pro to make the voice overs.. Worked extremely well

A friend of mine was in a real good machinima. They made it over XB Live on Halo 2, called it "saving private cyan". Their site's down, but it was popular so I found another location, he was Grunt AZ, the blue sniper.

Anybody see the Casper Slide done in Half Life? That was GOOD! Around 8 guys all trying to dance at the same time, jumping, strafing and crouching to the music.

Do you mean macromedia.

If you want to make animations and games get Macromeadia Flash MX 2004. I Don't know how to make a game but I have made some movies. If you want to buy it costes $500 for the regular version and (i think) $700 for the professional version. Don't worry too much their are trials to see how it is.

If you want a free way easier way to animate in 2d get Pivot Stick figure animator. Its cool and very easy to learn.
