Longhorn Beta 1 should be out in about 12 days! I'm just wondering what peoples opinions are on Longhorn, and weather or not you're going to get the Beta version - I probally will if it'll fit on one or two CDs. I've been scouring the internet for information about Longhorn since I found out about it, but one thing I've never been able to find is its release name (probally because it hasn't been decided), when do you think will they name it?

Even MS calls it Longhorn at the moment, no proper name.

I will definately get it, primarily because when I get a new pc it'll ship with it

Official name(s) currently on the table is Experience, Xenon, and NeXt.

That said, I've not heard it dubbed NX since they dropped the .NET core. Regardless Microsoft Beta's are rarely made public, you probably won't even see this even after Release Candidate 1.

It's likely there will be a Trial Version though. Public Beta's generally only happen once they feel that it is time, Windows has never before had such an honour so I doubt they'll change the tradition.

They're certainly not breaking the mold with any other sodding aspect of it anymore.

Even if I/we can't get or hands on it, or choose not too, the screenies will be up on google within a few hours. I've seen screen shots of Whistler (XP code name (for those who don't know)) and they look very different from the relase version of XP.

Still, I'm very curious .

I can't see a problem with Windows 2007, but I doubt they'll use it. Perhaps Windows XL or Windows X?

lmao, god knows.. always felt it was an ironic name for that shopping chain.

'lets go to the next store'.. could mean many things
just like there's a story in Watford called 'That', so you'll be like "you know it's that store in town!" and some smartass will be like "well i don't remember That selling electronics"

it's also the name of a processor that the original NT was designed for iirc; but it came along the lines that they could call it NX like Windows XP is called it because it was 'eXPerience' which makees me doubt they'll lengthen the name again. That said the new spelling had more to it iirc XPS or something. Can't remember now.

doesn't matter it'll be shortened to 2 letters or the year it comes out in.. I kinda miss the whole versioning system.

Windows 5.3 makes more sense in the long-run; but I guess it isn't friendly enough.

Microsoft Windows Codename "Memphis" 9x 4.93 1998
Microsoft Windows Codename "Whistler" NT 5.1 eXPerience 2002

So heh yeah it's not like we've had some sane names. Usually they're just dubbed after the town they're being developed in;

I'm kinda glad they took out the side bar from Longhorn, it may have been a 'step forward' but it was really ugly and I hate having things taking up large parts of my screen. If they could do something along the lines of desklets (you get in soem Linuxes) that could display information, but also be transparent I'd be excited.

http://www.winsupersite.com

This is where I get most of my Longhorn info, looks like he's got Longhorn pinned for being called Windows 2006.

Edit:

Do you think M$ would benifit if they had a long term project to create an entirely new foundation for their OSes to run on? That way they could meet most of peoples grips with Windows right from the very core of the system. Granted this would probally take longer than the usual development cycle, but if M$ could improve Windows then I'm sure they'd beat off any threat from another OS.

On the flip side of that, what if M$ indulged in some open source projects, perhaps even creating their own version of Linux? I know this wouldn't be such a great hit with people, but if M$ developed their own Linux falvour that was compatible with M$ software then they could attract a lot of people to a free OS but control the software that was run it (thus making money)?

Opinions welcomed.

Unless I'm missing something, MS developers do not develop Windows in the city of Whistler Seems like they love skiing in British Columbia is all (i.e. Whistler, Blackcomb, Longhorn are all ski hills here).

Jesus, I only put M$ because I couldn't be bothered to type out Microsoft five times. How can I call myself leet when I ask for help so much, which I'm not afriad or embrassed to do. If it pleases you I'll go back and edit the post to change M$ to Microsoft.

Longhorn is also the name of the Suburb/Mountain in Los Angeles where development started. I always felt that Whistler was quite out of place, but perhaps your right. Either way they're naming them after places.. again i'm sticking with the whole 'not sane' point.

sorry but, why aren't you writing MS instead of M$.. some of us actually happen to work for them ya know so I do find it extremely offensive when retards do that. You want to be a retard about your spellings of Microsoft or it's abbrieviations go [censored ALOT] with those Linux fanboys in thier forums. don't care where the goat comes from but you can definately insert it [censored... seriously don't wanna know what was here before!] >:-(

And what Microsoft are doing with Longhorn is different to that because..?

Seriously while I do admit with Paul, that the major problem is that Microsoft did promise more; and we are all sorely disappointed with the end result. A minor fact that is often forgotten is that Longhorn is actually pretty rock solid, even with current applications.

While this will be the first Windows OS that basically from the End-User perspective won't have changed.. underneath the hood, and Heavy-Useage Users, WILL see dramatic differences in the performance.

The new memory system works smoothly. Boot-up time is quicker than ever, I'm still waiting to see thier 'Unhook Reboot' allowing Windows to reboot without physically rebooting the system.. that should be cool. Searches are now done quicker.
All of the current programs load quicker and take less space, the libraries load quicker and take less space.

Everything has been changed from ridiculously hacked libraries to completely rewritten source to do exactly as it was intended to do after all of the hacks.

What you have is an entirely new breed of Windows, while still technically being effectively identical to the last one.

They've already created thier own Unix, why would they waste thier time on something inferior?

Why are people getting so hung up about an abreviation? Everyone knew what I was talking about and I personally think M$ is better than MS so you don't confuse a corporation with a terminal illness. Annnd before anyone lays into me about that it was a JOKE!

yeah.. first thing people will think in a forum NOT dedicated to the condition will be, 'why does Windows have a serious health condition?'

apart from that fact, it isn't abbrieviated MS; it's done a different way. Forget what but I could ask my Ex, he sister suffers from it.

as far as jokes go; it was retarded.

With all the stuff that was supposed to be in Longhorn but has been taken out now to match a reasonable release date, it looks pretty much like an average XP update. That's ok but makes you wonder why it takes them so long.

I believe that particular fantasy runs since a couple of months now. Doesn't make it true nor more credible, but hey he tries hard.

Err guys, Ravens comment didn't actually say he worked for MS, just that some people here do (which they do). Although I can clearly see how it could have been read like that.

Back on-topic now please.

A great many people think they are thinking when they are really rearranging their prejudices.

According to the press release on Microsoft from WinHEC site, it'll be publically released in July. Although legally the WinHEC version (5048?) should be available, provided you can get you hands on it.

Probably because they are such a massive company. When they start using meetings to solve simple problems and make simple decisions it takes ages and a lot of people to do anything.
They also don't have a lot of incentive to do better. Even if it's nothing more than an xp update it will still get installed on practically every new pc and they can all pat each others backs and say what a massive success it was.

It's pretty hard to be interested in future windows versions. Others like os x and linux have an incentive to get new features working and released as quickly as possible. They have the potential to get a lot more users and are can be more efficient since there is less corporate decision making getting in the way.
Chances are every interesting new feature in longhorn will be available a lot earlier in another os.
