Hi all!

Whilst I'm waiting for media for my RPG (Realms Of Tutopia), I thought I'd get started on a new project. As you may have guessed that is where this game comes in!

I've been working on it about 2 days and have 2000+ lines of code so far.

List of things already incorporated
-Player control
---Moving
---Jumping
---Stomping
---Dust particles
---Sound effects
-Levels
---Collision
---Crates
---Crystals
---Exploding boxes
---Portals
---Particle effects
---Some sound effects

Things I still plan to add
-Player
---Animations?
---Shooting?
-Levels
---Moving platforms
---Lasers
---Stories?
---Other collectable items
---Switches
---Doors
---More sound effects

Here is a downloadable .rar file with a bunch of screenshots that I took today.
http://elbsoftware.dbspot.com/Demo/Screenshoot.rar

I had taken a video but at the speed it ran in Fraps and the lack of sound effects because Fraps doesn't record them made it pointless. I'll try and get a demo up soon.

Any questions or comments based on the screens are welcome.

Thanks in advance.

Andrew.

[Edit]
Forgot to mention a few things.
When you jump and land a small dust cloud with a quiet thud occurs but when you stomp it makes a louder noise and bigger dust cloud.
At the moment you collect crystals and smash crates by stomping on them to get the crystals inside. This adds some puzzle elements where you need to smash crates in the right order as you can use them to reach a higher places. This means if you smash them straight off then secret areas will be un-reachable.
There is probably some other stuff but oh well!

[edit] Looks very nice, alot like Croc. I think you should pan the camera out a bit though, but it looks very promising. I've to try out your Realms of Utopia (sp?) game shortly, but the screens for that looked good as well.

I edited the above post so please read the bottom part again.
I can host them myself on DBSpot I just put them in a rar file to save time. It took it from 35Mb down to 8Mb! Thanks for the offer.
If people want them seperately then let me know and I'll sort it out.

Well I've done some serious optimisation and the program now is exactly the same but is just 1600 lines of code.
My loops look like this:

I have 3 levels fully made now.
The plan is to have a new thing implemented every two levels:
1+2 = Just the basics
3+4 = Exploding blocks
5+6 = Lasers
7+8 = Enemies
etc.

Looks very good so far! I've been working on a platform myself but haven't had much time to program it... I really like the block explosions, although I think the question marks would look better if they were bigger.

The only thing I didn't see in the screens or the planned updates was the addition of sceenary. Do you plan to have any, and If so, what kind?

Also, don't you think the 7th level is a bit late to add enemies?

What you talkin' bout?!

Drew Cameron's Edit - It is Realms Of Tutopia. Thanks for comments about both. Camera never has been my strong point but I'll have a go.

Bizar Guy - Thanks.

Not too much. Possibly the odd tree or plant or something. I'm definately planning to add a skysphere but not to look like sky. More some sort of plasma sphere! I'm also messing around with adding some black fog to blend the objects with the background in the distance which looks quite cool. If you have any suggestions of what to add in the way of scenery then let me know and I'll give it a shot.

Quote: "Also, don't you think the 7th level is a bit late to add enemies?"

Not really. Every two levels brings in a new obstacle (exploding blocks, lasers, enemies, moving platforms, ropes). It is either them at level 4 or another obstacle at level 4. I am adding them in based on difficulty level so if it turns out that they are harder than something at level 8 I'll swap them around and vice versa.

At the moment I'm planning to make 8 levels and a boss. The teleport room has a central platform where the player starts off. Then to the North, South, East and West there are other platforms each of which has two portals to other levels. Once all those levels are complete a portal will appear in the centre platform which will take you to a boss level. If Drew doesn't mind me sort of implementing his idea of having two characters which you can switch between in order to complete a level I may try that as well.

Thanks to both of you. The player almost certainly won't remain as a sphere with a face unless you lot want him to.
Raven - I'm glad it reminds you of such a good game but I don't know what it is about it that does.

Not Equilibrium... that was a final fantasy like game... probably The Magic Land. The main character in that was a pee with sunglasses.

I say change the main character to something more interesting. It isn't that I don't like spheres, it's just that pretty much anything is more interesting most of the time.

Also- have you considered adding a character shadow? It just seems that with all the cool effects the game has, not having a shadow is wierd.

No it wasn't TML, it was much much older. Wasn't a DB/P game, it was done in DB, on the original 1.08 CD by ColorArts (the german guy who hosts the German DB Convention)

Well anyways, that was an awesome old game. just a shame no save points ment I got bored of it before getting too far. Was weird talking to people as a ball too heh but very awesome.

I already said I was going to change him. The only problem is that adding a shadow to a more complex object will cause a huge slowdown.

Then just make the shadow a circle similar to in mario 64. The important thing is that there is one, because it's exelent for juding where you are in a 3D space.

I know but that means I would have to make a shadow with code rather than just typing in set shadow shading on. Thats fine on flat ground with no jumps or height changes but on this causes a problem. Every time I try it it works for a while but eventually dissappears underground. If you have an idea how to do it then let me know. I'll take a look at the intersect object command and see if that helps.

hmm... could you by chance make an invisable sphere where the player is and shadow that? or would it not work because the object is hiden?

there's no major trick to shadows... do what everyone else does.
fake it.

what you want to do is have the shadow constantly moving downward until it collides with something; at which point you just add 0.01 to the Y axis.

sure the shadow will go through walls and whatever, but on the plus side it's very quick, just remember to alpha the texture/object based on how far from the gound the player is.

what do you use to create your objects/levels and texture them?
This looks great as usual.

Thanks. I use Quill3D for levels and TrueSpace3.2 and Wings 3D for other objects.
Raven - Only problem with that is that for some points the shadow will be in the air and moving down which looks worse than no shadow. Also, NG will trap the shadow under parts of the mesh. I'm not giving up on the shadow though. I'll just keep trying.

I had the idea of all ideas! Well it is pretty good anyway!
I'm going to combine my two projects. Whilst you aren't in battle then your sword will be sheathed and you control the player as you would in a platformer(jumping, climbing, rope swinging), and when you get into battle you un-sheath your sword and can only move and fight. Getting to work right now.

I now have lasers sussed. Using the intersect object command, the beams are projected visually and will stop when they hit something. This means the player will be able to push blocks around and block of the lasers for safe passage. Looks quite good and runs fast.

I think I also have shadows sorted as well thanks to that lovely intersect object command. I can't believe I never bothered to use it until now.

Well sorry for the slackness. I was getting bored of programming (shock horror!) after doing it for at least 6 hours everyday so I gave it a break. I've been playing games rather than making them but now I have the urge to code again so back to work but perhaps more like 4-5 hours a day!

If you get bored of programing, you should probably play a computer game. Not one that you've made, but a true profetional big-budget one. It's probably one of the last things you want to do after programing for six hours, but it keeps thing in prespective, and acts as a good control. If your game is good enough, you can marvel at how much better you're doing than a big budget team of programers. If it isn't, you can get ideas on how to make your game feel and play more like a profetional prodution.

If you don't care all that much though, just sit down in front of a TV and let you brains rot for a while - it's very thereputic...

I usually like to go out for a walk every night after coding to clear my head.

A long walk mind; like 2 miles or more, otherwise it doesn't help you

Thanks. I already had my break playing other games. Mainly City Of Heroes, UT2004 and Chaos Legion. The eason I haven't posted here in a while is because I have been working on Tutopia so this took a back seat but I guess I'll start doing some more now as it got some interest.

Ahh! Forgot this project existed! Damn it! I have 7 projects on the go and this one completely slipped my mind. I'll go and do something on it straight away. I'll set myself a deadline for a demo. That way I'll remeber it! Um...Friday latest.

Well this one was only started as something to do whilst waiting for media. Plus only two of those 7 projects were my own! The others took priority. I managed to make my own collision rather than using NG today and it runs at the same speed so it doesn't really make a difference if I use it or not! Day wasted? I was experimenting with the intersect object command.
