I found this news artitle, have a read:

http://uk.videogames.games.yahoo.com/06/news/56-3e6d06.html

Makes me think of those MMORPG obssessed nerds who clocked 30+ hour sessions every now and then.

But then again, considering many news stories we see today, how much of this story is true?

Anybody might have an epileptic seizure under the right conditions.
No one knows if they will or not. I certainly don't think he was
"over stressed," though.

He must have been really into it, or it was probably just the fact that he didn't take any breaks. I've played for 12 hours before, but I took breaks for food and a quick eye shutter with my head resting on the keyboard. This was at the lan house so somebody usually comes and smacks you on the back of the head after about 15 minutes, then you can grab a coke and keep going.

The over enthusiastic and those with far too much detention time.

Longest time I've managed playing any game in one stint was Morrowind for 7 hours, my eyes hurt after that. Most of time though I do 2 hour stints.

Unless you're planning on playing the game for 12 hours a day for a few months straight, what's the worry?

Or are you?

Don't we all just love sensationalism!

Quote: ""Apart from his obsession with computer games he was a healthy kid and there was no reason why he should not have had a long and healthy life," Sulimov said."

Playing computer games for 12 hours straight at that age is not healthy or normal. People who can't stop playing games like this kid and the couple mentioned earlier in the week who lost their toddler, well they have/had addiction issues that could easily have manifested in any other hobby - I think it's a little short sighted of that article to mention his epilepsy in passing as if it was a side effect of the damage the game did to him. It's easy to blame the parents, but that's usually because they're to blame.

I mean, what the hell happend to parents playing videogames WITH their kids? (or at least keeping tabs on them) - it's easy to spot when someone is getting too frustrated in a game, and that's when you walk over and switch the game off (and also give them that look like your not interested in discussing the matter). I admit that I'd usually let them put on a different (easy) game for a bit.

Years ago, anyone about 30 will remember this, but Dominik Diamond, made a documentary about the addictive nature of videogames, and every parent under the sun watched it and took action. Apparantly some kids got grouchy when they were'nt allowed to play Mario - so they report that computer games are addictive (like smoking, or crack, or midget hurling) and me and all my friends got banned from games for ages. Parent's can't be reading this stuff nowadays, what they need is another documentary, showing it right after Eastenders for the best effect.

That'd teach all those little monkeys that are better at Halo2 than me.

Oooh, one of the lucky ones to get tickets?

I stood in line for about 10-11 hours to get LOTR Trilogy Tuesday tickets, but alas, they were all sold out before we got within 600 feet of the ticket booth.

Y'know what is kind of related to LOTR but not really but I'm going to talk about anyway? Dungeon Siege.

We had it going for a good 10 hours, but only had two computers that could run it and there were four of us, so in reality we each got about 5 hours. People should consider stuff like that, I mean DS can get repetitive, and that's when you switch players, usually the guy behind you thinks you're a complete farking idiot and is dying to show you the right way to take down that horde of trogg. No one has a seizure and we all get to play. Anyone on break can listen to music, find some crummy computer and browse the web, or watch TV, or play with whatever he found on the floor of my bedroom.

Once played Runescape for about 7 hours but ain't been on it for a while now. I'm sure when broadband is available in my neck of the woods (sometime around mid-July) I'll be chalking up a fair few hours on Counter Strike and Battlefield 2.

Can't wait until I get the chance to watch Star Wars Ep 1-6 back to back either.

He was practically dying in that computer games club, yet was on a ventilator and died a week later. Im not trying to say the complete article is BS, i just don't see how they can claim it was emotional stress because he was obsessed with the games and also state he was allowed to visit the local computer club by his parents as a reward for achieving good grades in school could it be possible that the stress of maintaining those good grades so he could play video games that had caused the epileptic seizure.

When i was a teen i would sit and play nintendo for 10 hours at a time, now im 29 i work from 5am to 5pm at my job come home and get on the computer from 6pm to 12am every damn day. I used to skateboard with a guy who couldn't even play most video games over 5 mins due to having seizures although he never died from it, i belive there is more of a reason then just playing games for his death.

My Dad first introduced me to videogames (I used to sit for ages watching him play DOOM) and he was the one in the family who got a play station (when they were pretty new). Ofcourse he used to let me have a bash on it but also made sure if I ever bought a game it was actually good, telling me to check a review before I bought anything.

Over the years he got too caught up in work to play but did start playing again when he got half life for Christmas one year and the sitting and watching started all over again (I had a go, but accidently saved over his file). Then I got a PS2 and it was his turn to sit and watch. He had the odd go but ended saveing over my Red Faction file, claimed it was an accident but I'm sure revenge was sweet lol.

Now it's just me, my brother and my mum. My brother doesn't see the point of videogames and my mum simply doesn't understand them. I admit, if I started playing San Andreas in front of her she may have a thing or two to say and she occasionaly decides I'm playing too much but never really enforces any rules.

If she actually understood ANYTHING about videogames she may be more or less concerned, I don't know. But now I've got a debit card and can buy stuff over the net it's just alot easier/cheaper to get the games I want.

I'm glad my mum just lets me get on with it. I enjoy having the freedom to make my own decisions and thanks to my dad's early lessons I've not bought a duff game yet. I don't exactly relish the idea of seeing my mum bouncing around in front of my eyetoy anyway.

If people sit at the pc 10-12 hrs straight every day, that might give you sign to tell them to get their ass up and take a break at least. Those kind of people live off of video games, and when they play, they're in a different world (you gotta slap them so they'll pay attention to you). I knew a kid like this, and he sat at the damn pc so much, he had no tan at all. If he came out to play basketball for 2-3 hrs, he'd almost get a sunburn. He wasn't as crazy as the Russian kid because he took breaks once in a while, but sometimes he'd just sit 7 hrs straight, forgetting about food and homework. And then those kind of idiotic people get sent to doctors and they're like "ooooo he's getting retarted...maybe all the gamers play nonstop like this...let's tell parents so they'll scream at teens if they play for 1 hr+" Some people don't sit on the couch and day-dream about games whenever they're not playing and don't get brain problems. Some people realize that games are just games and when you exit a game, you actually stop playing it.
And thanks to people like that Russian, parents are influenced to shorten teen's playing times for the sake of their brain. The kid literally played to his own death, probably because he was pk-ing and lost his dragon battle axe and got sooo pissed he had the stroke or whatever. That's my thoughts on 24/7 gamers like him. Btw no racism here, I'm part russian myself.

i think this is crap.. there could be sooo many reasons for his seizure... so blaming gaming (yay, rhyme) is wrong, but gamers are getting used to it as it happens every month or so.. yet reporters seem to enjoy blaming computer games.. cant see why
