Hello. This is my first forum post. I have just began working with Dark Basic so I am a complete newb. I have noticed the book "Beginners Guide to Dark Basic Programming" here on the website and at Amazon.com. I was wondering if any one out there has used this book and is it worth getting. I am kinda thinking of ordering it along with Dark Basic Classic (I've been using the demo version) If any one has comments on this book please post them.

Thanks

kicklike amule,

I have never read the book myself. However, some say that it is useful, and some say it lacks on some complete specifics. Either way, I would be sure that it would be a wise choice to get the book for a "jump start", being that you are new to programming. On the flip side, BASIC is a quite simple language, and the HELP files that come with DarkBasic teach the needed fundamentals, on up to advanced approaches.

In conclusion, try out the implemented tutorials, first. If you don't understand the concepts within them, then go buy the book. This will save you money that you might not need to spend. Remember, that the forums are here for you to search and ask for answers to your problems. Good luck to you. Programming is a great deal of joy.

its a very useful tool, both for learning programming in general, and the dark basic language.

The book is good for teaching you the basics, but most of the darkbasic stuff will be from reading the help docs and getting help from online.

When you get this book, don't think that you'll make an awesome game right afterward, the book only gives you a basis of DB, the beginners part, and all else you have to learn on your own.

I bought the book. Its really good for beginners like myself and you. I should warn you though, that it does NOT cover anywhere near all of the DB commands. There have been commands used in software that i've never heard of lol, some pretty cool ones at that. I.E. there's a command i beleive that makes a surface reflective, or something like that. But it does go over several dozen of the basic commands, and in the last chapter, takes you through the process of making an entire 3D game. Definitely cool.

In any case, definitely buy the book, and pray that they release an "Intermediate (or Advanced) Guide to DarkBasic Programming"
