I personally hated the new look of Super Mario All-Stars for the SNES because there was no way to turn it off. If this is what happens with the Revolution's downloads, you can count me out.

What do you guys think?

Yaayy, now maybe the princess will become a hot anime babe, with swords and a puppy. Just like I've always wanted!

Quote: "Moving on, Iwata also promises that the classic gameplay of each title will remain absolutely unchanged, which, after all, is what these games are really remembered for. Right?."

Wrong. The gameplay was great, yes, but the lower resolution graphics made the games equally special and unique.

What's on the outside (graphics) matters just as much as what's on the inside (gameplay, engine, etc...)

I agree with Tobias. The music and sound was also great back then--- if they update them with "movie-like" theme songs... then I will be very disappointed.

keep the old titles the same, and make the new titles with the new technology.

Well, it would be reasonable if they were to make a new version of the game but also allowed the classic version to be downloadable. If not, no big deal, people will probably make ports of their emulators to the Revolution. Just like you can play Gameboy games on a Dreamcast.

Out of ht two posted screens of all stars, the bottom one looks much better. I wouldn't be bothered at all by an update. If Mario 64 has slightly smoother graphics? Great!

I think it'll diminish the whole nostalgia thing because I for one would not feel nostalgic about a game if it didn't look, sound, and feel the same way as it did all those years ago.

if a game makes me feel nostalgic and bored at the same time, I won't play it. If it makes me feel nostalgic and have fun, I will. If it doesn't make me feel nostalgic but I have fun, I'll play it.
Therefore the nostalgia isn't more important than the gameplay (to me anyway).
How many people still play the really old Pac-man regularly?

To make everyone happy, they should allow us to switch back and forth.

I love the old retro look, but sometimes it might be fun to try it with a new skin.

I couldn't imagine Mario 64 with "better graphics". I personally think it is just fine the way it is.

I think enableing people to switch between an updated and original look would endear more people to the service as a while.

Personally, I'd be playing them cause they're my favourite games and while new skins do feel weird Mario on the SNES despite the new skin didn't look colourful and over-cartoony like Mario 3 did. Kinda kept the more rough feel of the game, which I think is a good thing.

Still there are gamers nowadays who play games simple because 'it has good graphics', in-fact you ask most adverage gamers what console they're looking forward to most and you'll get the response..

"Playsttion 3, because it has freaking awesome graphics!"

That's all new gamers care about. I was insulted the othe day being told my creativity is crap and I only care about old games because I was trying to explain to someone that graphics AREN'T everything.
Though much like with the specifications, or other crap following these consoles; how am I suppose to be right when I disagree with the almight TV, and G4 Channel.

Just how current gamers are though I'm afraid.

I think I'll stick to MAME32 and play retro games the way they were supposed to look and play. The best retro experience is pretty cheap to lay your hands on. just get a half assed PC, fire MAME on it and chuck the whole thing into an arcade cabinet using USB to PSX adapters and old PSX pads to interface the cabinet controls. Around £250 for the most video game buzz you will ever get in your own home. 2 players on a vertical scrolling shooter on a proper arcade cabinet simply can't be beaten. ok, mabey just by 4 players on supersprint.

@raven, yes m8, current gamers = 'media brainwashed gamers'
Oldschool gamers = 'hardcore gamers' ie. we'll play anything that goes bleep, no matter how mince the graphics are.

cheers.

Agreed GeeCee, been meaning to make a cabinet for years but never had the space for it - one day though . I plan to get a second hand cabinet and wire in a PC to the original display and controls.

Personally I like the way Mario looks without all the 'upgrades' - the games so fast that the simpler colourful graphics made it easy to judge platforms when your flying through the air. I think it's simply a way to replace the graphics set with a higher res version - these would have to be drawn, there's no real way to upgrade the original graphics bar a bit of AA without using replacement graphics. It sounds a bit George Lucus to me, like trying to go back and improve the classics with modern glitz so that the young 'uns will go for it. Just pandering to graphic snobbery if you ask me, just like the design of the next gen processors.

quite Van.. will be nice when they the masses loose interest because these hyper-realism games take too long to make, forcing the industry to go back to basics.

I mean despite the front, the industry is currently dying out.. sure companies are still making a reasonable profit margin and more than ever; but this is simply because the last 5years have seen the games market grow 10 fold. Sad truth is that companies like EA are only making such a profit because they're effectively buying up the entire industry to make sure they have as many titles as possible on the market at any given time.

Going to be interesting seeing how long it takes before the public starts to see that the industry is in quite a major crisis.
I mean Eidos for example recently was bought out by SCi, because they'd gone bust.

Despite industry big hitting games like Time Splitters, Hitman, Tomb Raider, etc. they still went under. For a company that'd been around since the early 80s, it is a little shocking. Yet this isn't exactly an isolated inccident.

Okay, here I am - Proven Wrong.

I just played Maniac Mansion Deluxe, which is the exact same (more or less) of Maniac Mansion, but the graphics are much better.

http://people.freenet.de/lucasfangames/maniac/games_eng.htm

I loved it! I would much rather play this nicer version than the old version - because it looks better.

Old Version

New Version

But as far as Super Mario Brothers 1-3? I prefer the original graphics as opposed to the "Super Mario All Stars" enhanced graphics. I guess it all depends on the artist! The graphics in Maniac Mansion were so nicely done, that I think it added to the game play.

The Mario ones didn't add anything to the game play. In fact, I think many of the backgrounds were distracting.

And the gameplay of the All-Stars versions were very different than the originals. It's like they took the same physics from Super Mario World for SNES and moved them over to the NES classics.

But I agree--- that Maniac Mansion remake is a mint

mmm. I remeber reading about this a while ago. If I´m not mistaken Nintendo didn´t say they were going to update the graphics for each game but due to the fact that the revolution uses software emulation the graphics will be improved with filters. In other words the games will be the same for the most part. The games that will look better will mainly be the N64 games. Remember Sony saying ps1 games would look better on ps2? It´s the same thing.
