well, whenever it gets like a hamster basically, a few days ago i completely dismantled my whole pc and removed every fan from it's heatsink and took out the fluff out with a brush, i also removed the cpu heatsing and cleaned and applied new thermal compound, somhow there was fluff under the edges if the heatsink too

it was running almost 10oC cooler after the cleanout

my heatsink also screws to the mobo and is a large copper zelman, didn't stop me unscrewing it and putting it all back together, the fact i built the whole system in the first place probably made it a bit less daunting than if you didn't build it yourself.

But yer CPU doesn't need cleaning... also if you clean it then you could cause damage by chipping/breaking the core (if it's AMD) or by static buildup.... oh wait, let me touch a brick (inside joke)

Everytime I've swapped out a processor they've always been clean anyway, there's no need imo.

Every few months I normally take a big can of compressed air and hold a vac inside the case while blasting the dust out. Does the job nicely. Cant say Ive ever had dust between my heastsink and prcessor though

@O_x- actualy, mine does need a ton of cleaning, everytime i clean it tons of dust flies out as well as dog hair, and when i spray the canned air i end up sneezing and coughing and vacuming afterwards. lol.

If you hold the vac in place at the same time it should all get sucked in. I have a dog too, she sleeps in the same room as the comp maybe you should look at getting filters for over your intake fans.

Great, I was beginning to think he meant the inside of the case.. was getting worried lol :S

Anyways, I don't even clean the heatsink/fan either because I'm lazy like that.. I have a dust filter in the front of my case which I do clean out every few months.. just turn the key twice and the whole front of the case opens like a huge door and remove the filter. Almost like emptying a vacuum bag rofl ^_^

¬_¬.. i stil don't see what's so funny about it, electricity will jump to the quickest route to the ground; bricks will conduct electricity; no not in the same way metal does, but it will still act as the quickest route to ground.

jesus, anyone who took 1st year physics would know that.. not that anyone around this forum does. no instead all ya'll ever do is pick at what other people comment on like you've got nothing better.

as for cleaning; you should clean your system NO MATTER the cooling solution every 3-4months, if you don't have one of those small electricronics vaccums then use a soft-bristle toothbrush. Has nothing to do with making sure everything sparkles but making sure contact points are clear of dust as dust will inhibit electrical conduction.. this can loose you ALOT of speed.

Just because you have no fans inside a computer doesn't mean that dust will no longer settle inside it; it's attracted by the constant electric fields.

Right... so, there you have it... CPU = Computer System.

It's good to be caught up on high-tech lingo.

i cleaned and redid my cpu thermal stuff because i felt i'd done a pretty half assed job with the thermal compound when i assembled it so while i had the pc in pieces i took of the heatsink and did a proper job, there wasn't really dust between the cpu and the heatsink just around the edge of the cpu where the heatsink curves up a bit off the surface (anyone with a zelman copper round thing and an athlon 64 will know what i mean.

Raven: a brick will oppose more resistance to ground than your feet unless the brick's soaking wet, a brick is a pertty useless earth.
here's my logic- bricks are mainly sand and are dry, dry minerals and ionic compounds do not conduct, sand (silicon dioxide) is glass which is one of the best insulators there is, hence they use it for insulating high voltage power lines.

No, people know what the CPU is and what it means, they just still refer to the system as the CPU. It's pretty common and it'll bring about DOOM TO US ALL.

Only Computer stores will refer to your Stack/Tower/Slimline, as a CPU. Can't remember the reason I was told by the bloke at CompUSA but I don't really care much for the fact that PC Hardware suppliers to the masses get terminology wrong.

The problem with this is quite annoyingly profound really.
Given that the Computer Literate are out-numbered nearly 10:1, and as always is the way; when you have one particular group using terms for something, if the majority believe it to be true then that's what they will call it.

What is more annoying is because according to these people you've only be using computers longer, and the Floor Staff at CompUSA are the "Professionals", your the one who has it wrong.

One particular recent argument is kinda branded on my brain right now; That the G4TV Presenters are Experts on the Next-Generation Hardware, in particular what the Playstation 3 is capable of. Far more than any developer would ever know because they have "Press Access". You can't argue facts with people like this either, because while being told I was completely wrong; I was then told that the Playstation 3 has more "Floating" thingies than everyone else.

I then proceeded to explain what a Floating-Point was, why the more than can be pushed is beneficial to 3D Applications extra. Just to be spouted that the PS3 has more so it's better. Trying to explain that the ONLY reason the console has more of these things is because of the Graphics Card, which the then just released GeForce 7 was showing although the card is an improvement; it's specifications doesn't show that it is capable of out-performing it's predecessor by quite what NVIDIA were claiming.

It was mostly an arguement about how I believe that Killzone 2 wasn't real... even an iota.

Still despite explaining the power difference, showing several articles on the subject, explaining how the technology works and why, I STILL knew less than these G4 experts.

I've never watched the channel, but while I understand that most computer reporters are avid technology buffs; fact still kinda remains that people actually working with the technology you'd think would know more about what's going on, no? But aparently not.

And this is the serious problem. You could put yourself into a position where you'll meet alot of people who will see you as an expert say a floor staff at CompUSA; and tell everyone who wants a Graphics card that, such-n-such has a Fo Shizzle Processor which provides far more colours allowing better graphics..

After a few weeks you'll find out that that same card has an unspecified new processor that everyone wants in the next competitive brand card too.

So of course you'll see one card putting in a Shizzle Pro, and the competitor putting one in but calling it something different like a Nizzle Pro. Two new completely pointless processors to outdo the other all because some idiot believed a store clerk and started bragging sounding all technical.

I mean the entire computer industry has and will forever run on rumours to push each brand forward.. Above is perhaps a most extreme case, but the morons rule our terminology.

WiFi for example. I have no sodding idea where this came from, but it's definately a buzz word out of comtrol. I sure as hell don't remember the early Wireless Connections being called that..

It's something that seems to have appeared since routers became a big thing.

I mean the only other technology we call like that is HiFi, which for those who aren't aware stands for High Fidelity. Wireless Fidelity makes no sense though, what the heck does it stand for?

I'm sure there are others but I can't think of them right now.

If you have so much dust/hair/ect in your pc, then it's mostly your PSU's(power supply unit) fault because it doesn't have an air filter or it has a crappy one.

My dads computer which probably hasnt been cleaned for a few years ha build up all around the inside of it on every piece of hardware in it and what is ever worse is that the power supply was just a dust ball i sneezed alot to make a story short.

I thought it would e a good idea to clean my computer out after reading this lol needless to say it really wasnt that dirty the front fan which sucks air in wa as dirty as hell but everything else seemed to be in fairly good shape but needless to say that can of compressed air was sprayed everywhere alot of dust bunnies though.

the system gets dirty and full of fluff because your "outer case" has holes in. the whole point is to let air flow through the system to allow cool air in and hot air out, unfortunately near invisible dust particles get sucked in too but due to a combination of static and friction they stick to surfaces. the cpu cooler (and i mean C.P.U ! ) sucks air down through the heatsink where the dust particles often collide with the heatsink sufaces and stick. eventually this build up becomes a considerable hinderance to the air so it cannot be blown freely through the heatsink prongs, it also acts like an insulator (you know, you wear a fleecy jumper to keep warm, that sortof idea).
as for the actually cpu getting dirty, some heatsinks don't form a perfect contact over the whole cpu, just most of it and leave the edges slightly separated from the heatsink so the dust settles in these crevaces.
