I know, I have posted this before, but I didn't get much help. I also am using thegamecreators tech support, and am just trying to have as many sources of help as possible.

Whenever I start up DB, it hangs up and all that happens is a black screen with the DB loading cursor (the hourglass with D E in it.). When I press ctrl+alt+delete, it says that DB is not responding and I have to end the program.

This problem seemingly happened out of the blue, although the one thing that has a remote chance of being the problem is WinRar, wich I installed (i believe) around the time that DB crashed. But as far as I can remember, DB still worked for a while after I installed WinRar.

I un-installed and re-installed, but it still doesn't work. I also tried de-fragging my computer and doing a system restore, but that didn't work either.

Does your computer meet the requirements?

If DB has worked before it should still work unless something has been changed...have you changed any hardware in your computer? cause I doubt that winRAR had anything to do with it.

Are you using Darkbasic's editor or DarkEdit? Darkbasics editor often "crashed" on me before even getting into it. DarkEdit is easier to use.

I would download the latest direct x drivers just in case too:

yeah i know what the problem is, i installed some windows updates around the time when it crashed. the tech support people say that i should completely re-install windows. i think it's kinda stupid how db can't handle windows updates. is there any other way that you know of that i could fix the problem? like a patch i could download or something?

Link- I REALLY hope that was a joke. That would have been funny 20 years ago when BASIC programs were indeed basic, but these days BASIC languages have had most of the 'limitations' that swamped down the old BASIC languages fixed.

have you tried;

right click on db.exe
properties
compatibility
run in win98 mode

that helps me alot

Also, sometimes the security screen attacks DB and they both
die a horible death

Also, for DarkEdit ... disable visual themes gives better buttons.
Also, let me know if you have .mid problems playing music ...
I'm currently have that problem, but since I seldom use
music files except as a background, its not too important right now.
Or, I can always use an external DLL for that.

i tried running in win98 mode, but to no avail. i also got some more info from tech support. they said it might work to uninstall db and then physically remove all traces of it from the registry and everywhere else and then try re-installing it.

well, if my db and security screen did engage in battle and self destruct, what do i do to fix that?

how do you disable the visual themes? where is that?

also, before now i didn't even know that dark edit existed. i can do pretty much everything in dark edit that i can do in db, so i don't even need my defective db! i can just use dark edit, right? because edit still works.

I use Dark Edit for everything mainaly because I can squeeze much more code on the screen and its colour coded. I have never experianced any problems using Edit instead of DBC so just try using Edit if it seems to work for you

Did you try getting the latest DirectX yet like Grog Grueslayer said, because that may be your problem, because DB won't work right without it. I think it needs like atleast version 7, but there on version 9 or something now, try getting it and see what happens.

This happened to me - Random DB corruption, kinda like spontaenous combustion (y'know, when stuff sets on fire for no apparent reason).

If in doubt, re-install. Always re-install. Fixed my problems on no less than 3 counts.

(One time, no matter what file you chose and started editing, DB would always load this same broken graphical demo I loaded once, and the code would appear when you F12'd back to the DBC editor. But that must've been about 3 years ago or something now.)

You never said if DarkEDIT worked for you. If it does, just use it and problem solved....as far as I can see.....

The DarkBASIC editor and compiler are the same program.

@Blanky ... but darkedit isn`t, darkedit is a windows based ide written by Guy S for the original DB, if you look inside the darkbasic folder you should see a program called xdarkedit iirc, you need to start that and then set it up from the options menu before using it, works much better than the DB ide and allows you to scoot around windows pulling resources together etc much more easily.

Exactly. Up to a few months ago, I never knew that program even existed, until I opened it up in the folders.

DarkEDIT doesn't actually compile your programs.

Try this yourselves:

DB.exe -x some_code.dba

That runs some_code.dba, and that's the principle all DarkBASIC IDEs run on - i.e., via command line.

Think about it - TGC wouldn't let anyone rewrite their compiler, would they?!

blanky's idea is a good one.

If the dba program runs, then you know that the problem is with the editor portion of DB.exe and the compiler side is OK.

You haven't actually said whether using Dark Edit worked for you or not. If it runs, but won't run your DBA files, then it looks like DirectX being at fault.

If the dba file doesn't run from a command line, then I would again start looking at DirectX as being the culprit and reinstall/update it.

A faulty DirectX installation may well stop the DB editor from opening up, whereas Dark Edit being a Windows program and will run - even without DirectX installed at all.

no no dark edit works fine for me. it's just that dark basic will not work. if i click on the dark basic icon, it just is a black screen with the loading cursor. ctrl+alt+delete tells me that it's not responding. so i just use dark edit. everything's fine.
