UPDATE

-----------------------------------------------------------------

Hello everyone,

I am currently working on a game entitled Grand Theft Auto: River City. It is a parody that fuses the GTA world and the River City Ransom world together. It also has a touch of Phantasy Star Online in it (you have the ability to go online with up to 3 other friends and battle the whole game together). It is currently online to 4-player death matches but I have completed the combat and enemy section (I just have to make the enemies work across all players, currently no one hosts the enemy AI).

Here are some pictures to demonstrate:

Here is the main character Alex (in the white shirt) fighting the enemies in red. The combo system is in place which allows for up to a 5 hit combo.

Weapons can be easily picked up and either used for melee attacks or thrown to knock out the enemy. When an enemy is stunned, you can pick them up and hurl them onto the ground for a smash attack!

Shops will soon be available to purchase food to heal yourself and to boost your stats, just like in the original River City Ransom game! Oh, and yes, you can steal and drive the cars.

Here is a picture of the car being driven.

I need to add in the shops and finish up and optimize some of the online aspects, but soon I will be ready to create the original RCR game online GTA style.

The game might look better (albeit more retro) using Mode7 Rendering, that way you could have everything as a sprite and generated on-the-fly.

I could help explain how, would certainly make it look more interesting, from a graphics standpoint.

Thanks for the comments. I know the graphics are no where near today's standards, however I'd rather focus on that last and the gameplay now. I also want to keep the graphics kind of "retro" looking because I want to keep the same style as the old NES game River City Ransom (one of the best beat 'em ups from the makers of Double Dragon). I might redo the characters in 3D but they will still retain the cartoon look if I did. For now the gameplay is going well. I need to make the online part smoother as it only runs well on a lan. I'll post new stuff as the game progresses. Any other comments/ideas/praises are welcomed.

heh, well my suggestion was actually to make it 'more' retro, relying on nothing truely 3D.

It'd be very interesting to play GTA with an F-Zero/Mario Kart style perspective.

My thoughts exactly! I would be interested in makeing the ground look like the SNES mode7 look. The buildings, cars, etc. will still need to be 3D so I won't change over to a 2D only format, but having the mode7 look would be awsome! If you could provide any help I would appreciate it greatly!

I know that wasnt directed at me but i belive i can help with the 3d part. My limitations are:

1. Characters
2. Complex Vehicles,(I Belive these models (The type your using in your game.) should'nt be very hard.)

(Note I cant be modeling alot, im already helping out with Black Out.)

Helpful things would be:

1. Poly counts

2. Reference picture

Just let me know if i can help .

Thanks! I don't want to detract anyone from their own projects, but if the time comes where I need help modeling I'll be sure to give you a ring. Thanks for the offer and support!

You know the cars kinda look a little too dark, you should set the ambient light higher. It makes it all look kinda cell shaded(but not really cell shaded).

I remember those characters from a old NES game, City Pimps I think it was called(amazing game). Anyways I would probably focus on gameplay first too, then later have the graphics updated.

Yeh, work on the gameplay first. Whenever I make a game and do the graphics first, it always turns out bad because it feels finished long before it is.

Also, this is a cool idea, but...

Why can't you make the cars 2D? they are in Mario Kart and F-zero.

I could...but I already programmed way too much of it around 3 dimensions that it would be a pain to go back and do it all in 2D. I also want to update it and give it a cel-shaded look (the shops, cars, buildings, etc). I want it to look old-school while still being new-school. See Grandia 2 for the dreamcast. It looks like a 16-bit RPG but is in 3D.

River City Pimps was a hacked version of River City Ransom. Basicly nudity and curse words were added. However, the core of the game was the same.

It's maybe just my sense of humour but that game looks like awesome fun, kinda reminds me of Target Renegade and I loved that. There's something about a dude in a T-shirt doing a flying kick, it just screams RETRO HEAVEN!.

Looking forward to this.

*UPDATE*
The game is currently online!

Sorry for the lack of updates, I have had a hectic couple of weeks.
During the free time I've had I have added the online functionality.

Now you can fight the enemies together in co-op mode for up to 4 players (broadband) and 2 players (dial-up):

Or you can duke it out on the roof tops in Melee mode:

Steal cars, throw weapons, chat, and just have fun online:

I'll hopefully release a demo in the next couple of weeks. I still have to tweek a few things, but be on the look out for a demo soon!

Very sweet. I love the 2D sprite look, and it is phenomonal. You really need to get a downloadable version of that game ready....I really want to play it.

I should have a downloadable version within the next 2 weeks. I want to make sure the enemy AI is spot on. I also need to fix a few animation problems and make the combat system run smoothly between each player,

Thanks for the praise. Anymore would be appreciated

Nice. My only complaints are that the cars need to be re-modeled, and he moves to slow. Otherwise, this is looking great so far.
