No the Playstation 3 total power is 2TFlop
The actual processor is a fraction of the power of the RSX, which I've tried to explain on a number of occasions.
Quote: "That's pretty pathetic for a whole new line of video cards. I don't see any new technology whatsoever. I mean, more horsepower is nice, but there isn't a single game on the horizon today that the best 6000-line won't handle quite nicely, and since these cards have no new features of their own, they seem pretty damn pointless."
And how is the Radeon X-Series any improvement over the 9xxx-Series?
It's the same deal, I mean the 9800 XT was actually capable of running Half-Life 2 at near enougb Maximum Settings reasonably well.
Thing is modern games are improving, and as they do these new cards are going to become more and more important.
Perspectively these new cards do offer quite a bit.
The GeForce 6800 Ultra can run Unreal 3 - 1024x768x32@40fps, no joke that's it's refresh speed; Radeon X-Series is half of that.
So the first thing you'll note is that this new card 7800GTX can run Unreal 3 at 110fps, on the same settings. Another thing to point out is that the AA and AF have been overhauled. Now they'll run based on Alpha Channels and with as little as 5% Processing Cost. This means the same setting at 100fps.
As far as the low end 7200 goes, your looking at potencially 40-50fps.. which makes it AS playable as the current high-end $450 cards.
Another point to make are the new hardware features.
Half-Life 2 is adding HDR this August with 'Lost Coast', but this will require HUGE VRAM and also costs quite a bit of GPU time. This means that it takes an almost 50% speed hit in order to run it.
Hense why at E3 they were showing it on SLi 6800 Ultra.
7800 GTX however does it hardware. You'll see very little performance hit, somewhere around 2-3% if what they said was true.
So these awesome graphics that are just making thier debut will really start comming into thier own. Especially given Hardware implimentations of technology is often sharper than software becuase it doesn't need to be 'optimised' to make it friendly to all cards.
While sure, it is mostly a speed increase...
GeForce FX 5950 Ultra - 0.45 Million Polygons Per Scene
GeForce 6 6800 Ultra - 0.97 Million Polygons Per Scene
GeForce 7 7800 GTX - 1.8 Million Polygons Per Scene
We're talking characters going from 3,500 -> 7,000 -> 14,000 Polygons in a matter of 3 years. This is an insane improvement!
