im wondering because this is the only forum where newbies have to have their posts approved. how many are not approved? how many are edited? it seems like an unneeded workload for the mods, and it cant be fun reading 100 newbie posts

so question 2, why do you need to approve posts? how bad was it before you implimented this (i took a DB break for half a year so i wasnt there)

If you want images/media/software hosted, log in (with ws ftp or something) http://lysergium.net/public with the username public, password public

There's alot of posts that don't get approved!
Especially spam... It's a Great spam filter!

I very, very, very rarely edit a newbie post ( if it's got bad content in it, it simply doesn't get approved ), I think I've edited about 2 or 3 that I've approved all up.

It's not too bad - I log in straight onto the approval system... Most of the time there's none waiting, and at the busiest of times, there's about 20 waiting

Nothing more than reading a single thread on the forum

Before the system was put in... It was aweful!
There was a massive bout of newbs posting pornography, cracks, illegal stuff... Just general arse-hole'ness...
Since then, I don't think any normal forum user has done it ( to that extent anway... If we see it, they get banned. Then they come back with a new account to try and spam us, which never makes it past the newb filter ).

Again, it's a great system, and really does make keeping the forum a safe environment for everyone ALOT easier

Jess.

um. this post wasnt needed. i dont approve of it! lol
mostly because they spam imediatly with questions. numerous threads in all the forums of the same question.. demanding answers withen 15 minutes of posting..

and the noob post approval is good because it does calm things down. i dont need 100 posts all in one hour of nonsense and get all the good posts down.

On the subject, may I asked why I was noob slapped by whoever? Im sure there was a perfectly good reason, I just hope its not from having a different view than other forum member, if you don't want to approve this, want to send me an email? (DJLeys[at]gmail.com). Thanks.

Don't look at me like that!

I've never had to disapprove, except one thread that was in the wrong place.

I dont think Mods do there jobs well enough. The amount of time I see brand new newbies posts getting lock after getting approval as they were making a team request without doing any work themself.....

Nah just kidding! That was about once. I was a member on here years back and it was full of arse-hole'ness like Jess said. I think the approval system is a good idea!

Well, I was on here a while back but never used the forums then. So I can't comment on it and the closest I've ever come was mistaking the Program Anoucements for a progress in progress forum. I read the stuff about the WIP forum, but didn't think it was ready for that. I basically got the two backwards. If I would've known I would have posted at all. So my post got moved to the WIP forum and I didn't want it to be flamed so I through in a few details and a screenie or two. I'm not a newbie to the forums but even I make mistakes as they do change over time. I was gone for about two years just got a new laptop and just got back to my project.

I've been around so long, by the time the newbie system got installed I was way beyond the requirement of 'regular forum member' so I've never had to endure the post approval delay.

I do agree it's a great idea, since without approval there's no way to stop someone from creating an account just to spam the forums with porn and illegal crap, which some people undoubtedly still try to do (mods, am I right?).

In the long run it makes these forums a more enjoyable experience for the people who want to use these forums for what they were intended for.

I don't suffer from insanity - I enjoy every minute of it!

The only posts I disapprove are double posts because the poster didn't realise they had to wait for it to be approved before it would appear and decided to repost it instead. Although, this only ever happens once every couple of weeks.

Me neither. Once I got noob slapped but stopped using the forums before it started. What's the approval thing look like? It's dark and mysterious to me. I can vouch for there being too many noobs before, but there was an up side to. If I got bored, just open up the Team Request forum and have a wild night of flaming noobs. Ah those were the days .

I agree with the n00b slapping system. It works really well.

Unfortunatly it is sometimes used and the writer of the post didnt express him/herself clearly enough. He/She though should still be slapped though as there messages are there responsibilities (see the AUP)

There is only one problem I have with the approval system.

Since certain replies are awaiting approval they don't show up, not even a placeholder letting the rest of the community know that a post is awaiting approval. So I post, only to find out later that the post is approved and sometimes two or three posts wind up ahead of my reply.

Then rereading the thread, my post may look completely "off the wall" or out of context. Especially if the noob post states exactly the same thing as my post.

Or worse... Sometimes I go back to threads, and all of a sudden there are numerous posts inbetween mine. And quite possibly the thread has taken a new direction.

Quite confusing IMHO!

It would be nice if there were placeholders in the thread, so that the rest of us could know that someone is intending to post, but that it is awaiting approval.

Hehe, I know you were just kidding, but I wanted to make a comment. We(or at least I) still approve team requests and then instantly lock them, so the user at least knows what they did wrong(or what to improve).

I've only done this once, but if I have to lock and unapproved thread I generally approve it first to show the person who posted it. Otherwise they might try again. And again.

I do what Mike does sometimes...

I do it to the ones that are on the borderline, and I link them to the Team Request guidelines page, and then lock it...
Gets their team request out there ( if they left contact details, even better ), and also shows everyone who views that that isn't acceptable

As a moderator at the GBX forums, I can understand entirely why new members have to get posts approved. I wish there was some kind of auto approver, which would make Moderator jobs easier.

I've lurked for quite some time on and off these forums, I must say, due to the extra work of the moderators, these forums are well behaved and very informative.

Unfortunately, pre-approving posts for new members on larger forums is quite impossible.
