i have another computer in my room that doesn't have internet connection. but all of the others in my house do and they have netgear cards. i want the computer without internet to have it so i was looking at the Netgear Gigabit PCI Adapter, and its cheap ($15-$20). so, i thought, wow... i could use this for a simple-nothing special-internet connection. so i started looking at reviews for the card and almost everyone gave it 5/5 except one guy who gave it 1/5... and he said it doesn't work at all for Windows 2000, which is the OS i have for the non-internet pc. so, i thought, "o great..." and now i dont know what to do... should i buy it and pray that it works, or does anyone have any experience with this card on a Windows 2000?

Why not find more information about it and see if the manufacturer actually says its incompatible with Windows 2000?

the manufacture says it works with windows 2000, but the reviewer said that they were lieing. and there aren't that many reviews for the product, so i can't tell if the reviewer is right or wrong... thats why i came here to ask if anyone successfully used it with windows 2000...

if they claim it works on 2000(check the SP# too) and it doesn't, sue them for false advertising then buy any card you want.

i'm sure you could probably find a similar card cheaper anyway that WILL work wih 2000

if it's just to connect it to the network to share the internet a 100mbps acrd will be plenty fast enough, no point wasting money on gigiabit lan when you don't need it, and it's only worth gigabit of what it's connecting to supports it too (the other pc/switch)

there's a 10/100mbps card that will fulfill your needs

the only thing im afraid of is if i buy, for example, a linksys card, will it be compatible with my Netgear network? im hoping that it should...

pcmcia is the laptop card

every network card is compatable with every other acrd that uses the same cable type and protocol.
cat5 cable with an rj-45 plug and ethernet protocol are the standards usually used nowadays, any card with those specs should work (and any modern cheap card will use those specs)

When would you ever need a network so fast?

100 Mbps is 25x faster than any internet connection available to home customers (in UK) - only people who really need gigabit networks are companies with 1000+ machines, with that number it's obviously gonna go slow at 100 Mbits...

The thought of a home lan running at 1000 Mbits is a nice thought, but not essential...

if you're gonna buy it though, buy 2... no point in buying something that fast if it can't communicate with any other machines at that speed, they'll all be limited to the standard 100 Mbits

...maybe one day I'll finish a project

i guess ill just buy the card, try it... if it doesn't work, ill buy a different card...
