Geek Culture / Need hosting for a large file (30-50mb)

I'm very near to demo stages on my new RPG called 'dream::catcher' (about a month away)

The problem is the sheer size of it! On my HD at the moment, it tots up to about 230mb

Luckily, 7-zip managed to get this down to an acceptable size (about 39mb!! Set on ultra mode, compressing on my Dad's 1.2gb RAM machine)

I was going to rush about getting a demo ready, but until I know I can host this file for free/very cheaply I don't think I'll bother.

Any hosting solutions? (DBspot seriously dislikes me. I'm also unsure of how much capacity it offers)

What makes it so big? I think you need to get optimizing, for real.

No game should take up 230mb

If you get it to <18mb then I'll host if for you, but 40mb odd is too much.

230 MB !!!

You are kidding aren't you? Like Drew said, you are obviously doing something seriously wrong - my bet is you are using loads of mega large uncompressed bitmaps or something similar. I bet with a little bit of help you can get game down to manageable size. RPG's are simply tile based games with lots of little graphics, so there is no reason to have such file sizes.

b) Well, its not your 'normal' RPG. Its pretty bloody huge, and relies on a lot of 3d meshes and textures.

c) Its not 230mb anymore, since I have removed alot of un-required stuff (like the editor files etc.). And as I said above, its yltra compressed down to 40mb with 7-zip.

Sorry man, but it shouldn't be more than 40mb uncompressed. Dumbo and Cool, including all media is under 60mb. After I take out editors, and ZIP it, it is only 15mb, including video files. You are doing something wrong here, for real.

Are you including MP3's? Video's? Large bitmaps? What exactly does your game contain?

Back on topic;

The game contains about 300 meshes (.3ds), 1 or 2 hundred images, 4 MP3's (which come to about 3mb in total), and the EXE itself is 20mb

Drew, I get what you mean, but I think it is a bit silly to compare Dumbo and Cool to an RPG; they are totally types of different game and rely on different kinds of media.

Not to sound offensive or anything, but the point of this thread was to ask if anyone knew of free/cheap hosting for large files, ot to get told how I 'must be doing something wrong'.

If you still need hosting I might be able to help you out. I resell web hosting to indi game developers at a VERY cheap price. You are unlikely to find what I offer anywhere on the Internet from such a trusted source. I buy web hosting packages from Mike @ Vapournet and resell them with extra features included such as Flexi-bandwidth (e.g. data transfer) which gives you a bandwidth limit 10 times greater than what you paid for. So no more being slashdotted.

Although it doesn't say it Flexi-bandwidth is included with all of the Indi Developer accounts I sell. My site has just gone through a major re-fit!

Tis a great site, its one of those sites for uploading software, you know kinda like download.com but you have your own account and is 100% free and you have unlimited space, they get their money by people who want to use the pass thingy which has no download wait and has some extra features and supports download accelerators. They're popular, on their server they have uses almost 10 terabytes last time I checked meaning people have been taking advantage of it
