Can someone please explain to me how to make a transparent background in photoshop

I have know idea what sflm stands for

you can create a photoshop file thats transparent on the first pop up window when creating a new file.

or

create a new layer and
delete the background layer

If no-one gives your an answer to a question you have asked, consider:- Is your question clear.- Did you ask nicely.- Are you showing any effort to solve the problem yourself 

Or ... if you already have a colour that you want to become transparent then use the magic wand tool with a low tolerance to select all of that colour and then delete it.
If the layer you are working on is the background layer and you did not set up transparency when you created the file make sure first that your background layer is unlocked. You can do that by simply double clicking the layer in the layers palette.
