I found out about darkbasic in the first issue of a magazine that came out called game maker. There was a tiny article in the corner of one of the pages but for some reason I just liked what I saw. I did a google and found this site. That's all there was to it really. How did you people found out about darkbasic, it's not as if it's widely talked about outside of the community. Thanks.

Actually, I've seen references to it in many engine-reviewing pages.

a good friend showed me a project he'd made. I wasn't massively impressed in terms of "oh wow - this could be the next big thing!" but I was impressed that he'd managed to make a program with a 3D model that was flying around a randomly generated terrain with a smooth tracking camera.

When I saw how simple it was - I though "I want in on that..." and headed straight to Amazon and bought it. Never looked back. I love it!

I don't remember how I found it.

In fact, I pray, every night, in tears, wishing that I never had.

I had not used a game making language since STOS (Atari). Then in 2000 I found DIV and started to get into things again. I also had heard of Blitz at the time (from Amiga friend obviously), but had avoided it due to DIV being totally brilliant language wise (awesome how easy it is to program). Then I noticed a few posts on the forum about DB. Saw a few of the early demos and pretty much threw DIV in the bin (because of the 3D functionality *not* because of the language itself). Bought DB around mid 2000 and been part of the forum community (if not the programming side for a few busy years) since then.

Heh, I remember when the next big DB thing was to get a real box and manual (CD in jewel case with "welcome to the wonderful world of programming" letter).

Cheers

I am 99% probably lying in bed right now... so don't blame me for crappy typing

DB was on a mag cover disk (maybe Pcgamer) a few years back , tried it, liked it then never thought anymore about it till I saw DBPro in Pcworld. Tried it, liked it but never produced anything worthwhile (so far ). So now I spend my time waiting for the next hilarious faux pas from Raven and talking to myself.

I honestly cannot remember.
I may have come across it on GameDev.net when trying to do the DX tutorials.

i think i found it on downloads.com(before cnet sold that domain so now it would be download.com) under compilers as i was wanting to make something more than a webpage. I tried liberty basic first then blitzbasic 2-d then searching for something where i can actually compile an exe, found dbp liked it and voila i end up posting here

(i beleive that was when the 1.048 upgrade was "new")

hmm ive been working with it for over(edit: miscalculation) 1 year and i still havent made any game that was good, although have made a pretty good media player through 3 versions

the words "extremely immature" come to mind. Hopefully everyone (except the noob slapping mods) will be able to ignore that comment and get on with the discussion.

Y'know, when two people start fighting this immaturely, it's like watching a burning messershmit taking a dive in a WWII movie, making a brilliant show of its disgrace, then finally comming to a halt, disappearing forever into the sea. Banned from the skies, hopefully forever. The idiot who got banned a few days ago is a good example.

Anybody got some popcorn?

Which is why I didn't argue back but instead asked that everyone ignore what was said and get on with the discussion. So how about we do that.

So that means no popcorn?

If I remember correctly, I was working in EDIT, writing EUPHORIA code, and my dad handed me a CD and said, "give this a try". That was DBC, before the enhancement came out.

As I recall... I was reading the DBP book at barnes and noble. I got a ways through it before I had to leave. So, I went home and fired up the internet, searching for dbp. Only problem was, I forgot it was "dark" and typed in "blitz" instead Thank god I went back to the store and read it again before buying it No telling where I might have ended up instead...

I read an article about it on slashdot a few years back, and paid $90 for it to be shipped from the UK. Little did I know that I could have probably got a better deal with a local retailer

found DB on the internet in 1999 after java 1.1.4 sdk was bollocks for even simple image flipping re 2d sprite animations.

I was looking for a 3d game creating device that was good. Then i started asking people how others made games so easily sometimes. Then i was sent that little demo with the scorpion in a cave. Was like "how do you do that?" and he replied "you have to use darkbasic, http://www.darkbasic.com" and i was like "ok then..." and spent the next 2 months studying it

well at the time I had no idea how games where made yet I was very interested in making one. going to downloads.com to make an rpg maker I figured out that sucks. Then I was looking on google and found Darkbasic. When I got I was like yay now I can make the next big rpg and stuff like that. Then I installed it and was almost disappointed that it was code. I wanted a click and drag program but I decided along with my friend that we should keep working on it. After some attempts on some games I soon figured out that the next big rpg wasnt a very realistic ambition. I became more computer literate and figured out many things though Im still very much a beginner in coding Ive come a long way.

I was searching for tutorials on 3D Canvas Pro, so that I could model big sexy people with my l33t modeling skilz...

Somewhere along the line, I hit a page that listed all this software, and it had a section for making games... DarkBASIC was one of the better reviews, so I grabed the demo

Good ole times, them

I heard about it from a friend. I was telling him how much I wanted to get into game coding, and he told me about darkbasic, I got classic, and eventually got pro. We were going to make a huge game, but then I moved. huh, I wonder what would have become of that project.

A chat with someone on GameDev chatroom. It was weird, he suggested Blitz and Dark Basic; I wonder what made me choose this one?

Amazing how that small chat influenced a major part of my life (DB / game coding)... It makes you wonder how you've influenced other peoples lives.

I saw it on some Mag CD some many years ago . I just ignored it, didn't have the money and at the time it wasn't my style of programming. But a year or two later, I was on a computer course and saw a guy, a few years older than myself, using it and asked what it was. For some odd reason, he lent me the CD - wasn't quite what i'd do to a person i'd just met that day, but hey, not complaining - and I installed it and started poking around with it. I quite liked it, and decided to get a copy from a PCWorld store (umm, I didn't know about internet shopping then?) for my new PC. Saw blitz, saw how it was better than DB but stayed loyal and got DBP, wasn't disappointed

DBC trial on PCGamer...I lost the disk for that one and i couldn't use it well when it came out, but about 2 weeks before my join date i realised it was really quite easy and fun...installed it on a better pc (not a v old toshiba satalite laptop ) and realised I really enjoyed it. Bought DBP for my birthday (couple days after join date).

Same here. DIV was a fantastic language. Shame there was no 'real' 3d (but I hear 'DIV Evolved' is coming out soon - DirectX9.0c with full shader support....)

I saw DB in PC world back in.... 2003? I think
I convinced my friend, that if he bought it, we could make a game together (our first design was a 3d knights game). He bought it for £30, and I started to code in it.

The game never saw the light of day; so eventually he got bored and left me with the DB disc .....

Around 2003 I was like this:

Quote: "Man I'm sick and tired of this crappy RPG Maker. I want to get into the world of 3D! *Looks over* Man those C++ books are big, and man I'm so god damn lazy to read thru them. Lets search the internet!Nah, that would take to long. Lets type random domain names!*Types in gamecreators.com. Well this site has some interesting engines, lets see, RPG Maker CRAP! Hmm what's this darkBASIC??? Sounds interesting."

So then I googled DarkBASIC and found the website and bought it soon after...

I used Game Maker for about 3 years... Then started looking at 3D game making packages last year... Downloaded DBP trial... Liked it... And went to amazon and ordered it.

I had heard about DarkBasic before though... Id seen it in Game Maker magazine like that other guy... (Only 1 issue of that magazine ).

Also Id seen it in GAME and on some PC mag disks... I think I had tried DarkBasic Classic before, But thought it was too hard at the time...

Well I robbed this old lady, and it was just sitting in her purse!(j\k, I killed the old lady). But really I started coding in VB but it wasn't very good graphics-wise. So I went looking to by C++, and I saw this book that said free programming demo with purchase(I figured it was C++), but alas it was only DBC. But I kept it because the book was interesting, and I began to fall in love with DB. We now have 2 kids.

I was visiting my girlfriend in Coeur D' Alene Idaho. We went to a Hastings store trying to find Eddy Murphy's standup shows on DVD, and I decided to browse the software section. Sitting on the wall I saw a program called DarkBASIC. I looked at it, and at first glance I thought it was a hoaky click n' play. But then I told my girlfriend what it really was, after I read the box. A few weeks after I returned to New York, she mailed it to me as a gift. I saw infinite possibility in it (as I do about a lot of things... my eyes are bigger than my brain, hehe). A few weeks after that, I had assembled a team of friends, and I bought DBPro, Cartography Shop, Geoscape, Character Shop, Texture Maker, Giles, ExGen, Treemagik G2, Plant Life, and a bunch of the expansion packs including Nuclear Glory and Blue GUI... the best $650 +/- I've ever spent

My Dad and I spotted Classic at PC World one day (he got that one) and I heard of Pro though magazine adverts and such, leading me to think thoughts of JUST BUY IT, YOU MORON when I saw that in PC World too.

Oh s***, there goes the planet.
