I have decided to add 512 megs of ram to my HP Pavillion. Has anyone else added ram to their comp with a noticable effect on their games?

Am I an Idiot...or is everyone else just really smart?

Yes... It has can have a HUMONGOUS effect... What did your pavilliion have before?

I upgraded from 512mb to 1gig... and it made a world of difference when i'm playing Planetside... Planetside, although it says that requirements are 256mb, the game goes up to 700... So you really want anything well above that... But that's only planetside, not sure about the other games -true- requirements.

Oops, just realized it already has two 256 in it so I have to take one out to put the 512 in. So its increasing by 256. Its a pretty good computer I think it has a Nvidia FX 5200 in it and it is 2.08 ghz.

Am I an Idiot...or is everyone else just really smart?

hmm
I upgraded my graphics card from a crappy 16mb to 64mb geforce4(pci) and noticed a huge difference when playing halo, then when i upgraded ram i noticed a big difference in ti also(along with boottime, applications, and just plain system response)

well my next goal is to get a apg 2x graphics card considering i just now figured out what that port in the corner of my mobo was(unless im mistaken)

n00bs will be shot on spot...
It only gets more logical from here(sigh)

To MasterChief: Yeah, it's decent... might want to upgrade the graphics card... though i dont know what kinda games you play so you might not need to.

I have a similar system, and its fine! I play Battlefield 2, Doom 3, Half-Life 2 etc fine on this system - but at the lowest settings I might add.

why don't you just leave the 256mb module in and add the 512 to give you 768mb ? or are they different speeds?

sounds like he had 2x256...

The other side effect of more ram is windows is more stable as it has to do less Page Swapping... (playing with virtual memory).. The less windows has to do - the more stable it is (its like a lottery.. )

@MM i think that's exactly what he's going to do... He's going to leave one of the 256's in and put the 512 in aswell as there's only two ram slots bringing it upto 768mb.

Make sure you know how much ram your motherboard can support. If it only supports 512MB (as my HP Pavillion does, although yours is newer I guess, mine's a 512n), then the extra 256MB is useless. I suggest a new motherboard and a gig stick. More money? Yes. Worth it? Definitely.

haxorphreak has a very good point, you also should have looked to see exactly what ram your motherboard supports. Some boards can hold for example : pc 2100 with 266 clock or pc 2700 with 333 clock and if your board requires registered or can use unregistered or unbuffered, ah kind of pointless post though since you already ordered it.

It doesnt really matter what speed the ram can go at... Ram is pretty much backwards, and forwards compatible... It's not very good to mix one speed with another however.. for example, a 266mhz 256mb stick, with a 333mhz 512mb stick.. Although it probably wont matter in most cases anyways.
