How do I create a bump map texture? Do I need any special software?

MSPaint would do, its basically a black and white picture file using the different shades between white and black to cause the bump effect

I'll be interested to see the responses to this one as well. It looks like all bump mapping does is add lighting/shading to a textured object to help make the texture itself seem to have far more polygon detail than it actually does. Take a flower pot for example. A fairly decent looking pot could be made using two "conified" cylinders. Not a high poly count. Add a photo-realistic flower pot texture, and it looks a ton better. Add a bump map texture and it get a greater 3D look, where the rough edges of the pot come out, maybe a crack looks like it actually goes into the pot. All that can be make the object look like it was made with billions of polygons, but it actually is just an effect. How one goes about making a bump map texture, I have no clue.

DBP's bump mapping usually comes out better using a normal map(The rainbow colored thing ).

Here's a thread I created a while ago that might have some helpful pointers.

The bump mapping shader works just fine with DBP. There might be a few .fx files floating around that give better results(I don't really know).

Download gimp 2.0 and the nVidia normal map filter to create your normal maps(both are free).
