there are some ten-year-olds on these forums who don't know how to program.

fxgamer: i just turned 11.

fxgamer and exnocythe: do either of you know anyone named taylor cummings? i seriously doubt it, but

I don't think age matters, as long as you're smart!

That is weird with 10 year olds. I though you had to be 13 or older to be on the forums. If only if only some Mods were reading this.....or your parents.

Yeah, I thought so. Maybe not. Most forums are for 13 year olds and older, I'll check.

When you sign up it only has two options for age.

Under 13 years old
13+ years old

I believe if you can read and write you should be able to post... regardless of age... especially since this is a safe place (I never see a "lets meet in person" message).

I started to learn DarkBASIC when I was 33! I bet it would have been a hell of a lot easier when I was 11.

I'm thinking about 6. I think I started when I was 8 but i'm not sure exactly... i'll have to find my very first Basic program and check the date of the file.

Here's a snip from a page about the minds of children:

Kids mature in three domains of growth: cognitive, physical and socio-emotional.

At ages 5 to 7, skills in all domains are emerging.

At ages 6 to 8, kids are beginning to consolidate their growth in all domains. They're still learning fundamental communication, math and problem-solving skills, and their social and community awareness is expanding.

At ages 9 to 11, kids are well coordinated in large and fine motor skills and they now have an increased attention span. Their developing self esteem requires positive reinforcement and it is important for them to be part of a group.

At ages 12 to 14, kids start looking at art and music more seriously. They are more sophisticated at conceptualization and abstract thinking, and they start making the shift from learning to read to reading to learn.

I only started finishing games when I got !real! math in class. (With wich I mean useful)
I'm 15 now and I'm programming about 3 - 4 years now.

BTW: How the heck can you program at 6 if you just started reading and writing?!

Well at that age they need the encouragment and help from Dad or Mom.

Here's a page where a Dad talks about introducing his 6 year old son to programming... at his sons request.

this is quite the thread. Personally, I'd think you should have atleast taken algebra, so probably atleast in 7th grade.

I'm 15, and I just started actually programming games. I've been doing it about 10 days now, and I already have a demo of my game made. My only previous experience with code period is a little bit of hacking (the good kind). I'll post my next demo on some thread whenever I get it hosted somewhere worthy . Anyone (yes, even you little bitty 11 year olds) can program with dark basic, as long as they can code stuff in. Knowing how to work with angles and stuff is a big plus, and you have to be smart, but programming isn't a big life step like learning to walk and talk.

And does being able to program as a kid make us wierd?

I started when I was 10. Within 3 years, knew DB, Qbasic, HTML, and Visual Basic. I was still an amateur in VB, and I forgot some HTML, so I had to look up the HTML tags every once and a while. I was an intermediate programmer in DB and QB.

I'm not bragging or anything, I'm just saying that there are alot of young programmers out there. You guys are not the ones.

@ Sven B - I agree with you. I don't think anyone can really start programming until they start algebra and learn about variables. (I am very lucky that my school has an advanced math class, or I would still be learning proportions and exponents now.
@ devastation 328 - WE ARE NOT LITTLE BITTY!!!!!!!!!! SOME OF US ARE ALREADY GOOD PROGRAMMERS!!!(like me )
@ shadow fire monkey - No, there are tutorials on the Dark Basic webpage. They teach you 3d stuff, but on the limit rush one it has a bunch of other stuff.
@ anyone who thinks that you need to be 13 to use the forums - Not true, there is an option which you say if you are younger than 13 or older. I put younger and I can post and stuff. I have not run into anything saying that you have to, so it is not an issue to the MODS.

Yup. If your under 18 don't post your age. This is a safe place for kids because of the ever watchful eyes of the mods. They just want to make sure that nobody knows the age of anybody that's under 18... just in case some weirdo is looking at the forums. A person doesn't have to join the forum to read these messages.

I first started at 9 with Qbasic - couldn't really do anything with it though, other than make it print random words. At 10 I discovered the amazing Klik and Play that kept me going for about a year before I moved on to the games factory, which really was just the same as Klick and Play

Then in 2001 I read up about DarkBASIC in a PC Zone magazine... sounded too good to be true, 2 months later I got myself a copy of it
1.12 Enhanced, So I thought I'd got some special deal because it was boxed, not downloaded

Now I'm also trying my hand at making the next Halo 2 (which I'm sure we all are, if we're honest with ourselves), it's not going to be that good though... Now my college course has a programming module in it. while everyone else sits there annoyed that VB isn't doing what they want it to, and I can just get it done in a few minutes, install the DB language on the college machines and carry on coding...

But to get back on track, DarkDASIC for kids? I'd guess that 70-80% of the community are kids, I never expected Sven B to be younger than me though. Next I'm going to read that TDK_Man is only 10 (except having his own company)...

...maybe one day I'll finish a project

I have no information about where I live, and I don't have my e-mail or IM account public, so the only way a person would be able to attack someone is to post here, which will be taken care of by the MODs.

I am going to get rid of my age anyway (but not when I started because that isn't important.)

normally they delete ages but this thread is to momentous to delete. and greenbunny i didn't mean 11 year olds suck at programming, just that they're young. when I was 11, i was eitehr sleeping in class, at the movies, or playing quake 2 on my leet p2 266 laptop online w/ a 28.8k modem!

and greenbunny, i just whipped out my ti-89 calculator and 10+3 is atleast 13, therefore your not 11. darkbasic is kind of a beginners language but it's awesome and we have some leet programmers that use it

and im 15 and a good programmer, im a kid too sorta

and i dont really feel that nervous about all the ages on here because I've yet to see a post that says "meet me behind the gas station on 5th street and ill give you some sliding collision code"

@ devastation 328 - I wasn't angry about calling us little bitty. It is kind of a compliment saying that there are younger programmers that you . Anyway, it is pretty obvious that I am kind of young with the Green Bunny signature and my avatar.

I started at around...hmmm 11 when my grampa gave me his old TI-99/4A....monster of a thing really. After no time i was making programs to do my math for me, or move a pixil across the screen.

loved the thing...
about 2 years of use, and it went dis-functional. But it was ancient anyways so i dont blame it ...

i dont know the actual system stats tho.

But it had the ability to use cartriges or cassette tapes. Loved the noises it made will reading the cassette tapes...

My old speccy had 128k memory
I never could program with it though - I was playing one of the games on it (unfortunately, I don't remember which one now)- Couldn't find the controls, pressed random buttons, and it printed up all the code to me... If only I could remember that combination, If I was to re-assemble the thing I could probably make sense of what it was doing now...

...maybe one day I'll finish a project

I started with Qbasic when I was 10 and then switched to Dark Basic when I was 12. Since you can't make very many good games besides RPGs with Qbasic, I became good at using For - Next Loops and arrays. With this talent, I am best at making dungeon games, or games with tiles, like RPGs. I have been using Dark Basic since.
