This might get me some slack or have me banned, but I have to express my dismay at this forum. I am part of a few forums and must say I have never run across a forum where people post more silly remarks or mean spirited writings jsut because they can.

Though most memembers are helpful - the few pathetic souls who make it their job to battle, argue and inslut - have brought this down. I am almost affraid to post for fear of either mindless babble responses or unsolicited attacks.

Freedom to write whatever you want comes with a responsibilty.

Over and out.

Yea, i know what you mean.
Sadly, the mods COULD do a better job. But you have to admit, its hard when theres over 10000(i think) members.
As to the dumb, anoing and I-dont-care-what-you-think members, well, what can you do? Megaton Cat is a perfect example.

Good to hear your opinion, and i hope the mods read this (they will).

madhouse,

What does not help is that FPSC is in a transitional period - theres not a great deal of discussusion about FPSC EA that is not already done to death - mostly threads regarding problems which have been gone over time and time again.

Some are sometimes a little lost and have nothing better to do.

I guess there arnt many users currently actually developing anything to shout about and as far as development of games is concerned there is therefore little posting of interesting practical FPSC game building issues. Either that or there are users which are so into their game making that they dont want to waste valuable time here - which would be the case if FPSC was that good.

I suspect that the EA version difficulties make the first observation quite the most likely one.

Some users here probably dont have anything much to do with FPSC other than play around with it otherwise they would not be here wasteing time on nonsense posting. Any serious game maker will spend as little time as possible at a forum and when they do will post seriously about development issues - not just talk about the weather or what they saw on Tele last night, or indeed spend time on any other nonsense postings.

I guess the powers that be could be said to be quite light handed on how they police the forum and thats by and large a good policy. One would expect human beings to behave in a civilised manner without undue interferance from authority. A bit of light hearted fun is fine though some of the personal verbal attacks on forum members that are seen here from time to time should not be tolerated at all in the slightest way by TGC.

Hopefully when V1 is released users will be too busy posting real questions about game making with FPSC.

If you dont want to be bombarded with nonsense when you post then just dont take the bait - state your post and leave it at that - just like I will do with this post - Ive said my bit now I'm outta here.

Dont ever enter into any tit for tat personality clashes - that will even at this forum only lead to one end result. There are still some here refering to individuals in a non postive manner if thats how I can describe it and it will lead to nothing but tears for those concerned if it does not stop.

peace to all

If you make a legitimate post, and you're attacked, a mod will make sure the attacker pays.

Quote: "Freedom to write whatever you want comes with a responsibilty."

Agreed.

Quote: "Sadly, the mods COULD do a better job."

How so?

Quote: "You've made an error: it's megatRon cat."

Don't fuel the fire.

Quote: "lol, good one French gui

although I think we may want to stop before this devolves into a 'lets flame Megaton Cat' thread"

Agreed. I do find it ironic that there is flaming inside a thread about flaming.

Quote: "All MODs get paid if we are bad fourm posters. If we aren't they don't get money. So naturally, to Milk Lee for all his worth, they must let us slaughter each other then come in and "collect their paycheck""

We don't get paid at all. We volunteer our own time to help keep things running smoothly.

Quote: "But the atmospher is far worth a few insults. On many boards there is a "Call MOD" button. This is abused to the core. People will "Call" the MOD simply because they dissagree with you. Sure it results in pretty boards, but what is life without a nice debate now and then. (Even MOD Wars are fun)."

Most of us mods have posted our e-mails. Use e-mail (or msn messenger/aim/yahoo) if you see things getting out of control.

Quote: "But the MODs CAN take care of it all. Rarly if ever are there a lot of people logged in (perhaps 50) so they CAN check it all. They just sit back and let us fight. (Until it gets too bad)"

We're not babysitters. There's hundreds of new posts each day. Perhaps together, the time we all sacrifice we'll see 95% of the threads around here, but we can't simultaneously watch every thread.

Nobody forces you to make a post. Use some common sense. If you're going to slam Megaton in a thread about flaming, you're 2X as worse. If you don't know whether a post is appropriate, ask someone(I've had several users ask me in the past).

Most of the slamming of other users goes on in the general talk.
If you look around at the other boards, you'll see that 95% or more are where they should be and stay on topic. This is one of the better forums around on the internet for game development. Every forum is going to have there share of flame wars, and arguments.

It's nothing to get too over worked about. Best thing you can do is take some time off from the forum and code.

Madhouse,

Actually, I'd probably agree with alot of the comments you have made.

But again, these forums are pretty good - have you ever been to Gamedev.net or MTV2.com? Other forums don't compare to these ones, which are pretty tame, friendly, get (reasonably) low traffic (which is good, as on MTV2.com your post sinks in under a minute) and contain a fairly tight community.

I do wish some people would be less sarcastic sometimes, but really Megaton is alright, you aren't meant to take his witticisms to heart.

Hope you feel better about the forums soon

Perhaps the advice on how to post should come from people who have never been banned and don't flame.

These threads are getting rediculous, if we lock a thread we get complaints, if we leave a thread to fester we're still getting complaints.

How about this for an idea:
Keep your irrelevant opinions about how the mods work to yourself, we're here because the community asked for us to be here, now live with it and STFU because it's getting real old.

If you have a serious question about something to do with the products related to this forum, post in the relevent boards. I hardly see flaming on boards other than the general discussion, unless it's a 3 line team request for the next 1337 mmorpg, in which case the thread is promptly locked anyway.

And a note on how to deal with flamers... don't shout back at them, it makes you appear just as bad as they are. Reply as if their response was completely unobjectionable. If their response really is so bad that you can't seriously reply in a civilised manner, just ignore them completely.

I know I can be harsh at times, but almost every time it is against someone who repeatedly asks where something is on the forum when all they have to do 95% of the time is take 5 secs and use the search feature at the bottom of the forums.

Oh now you've done it, Hamish. Yes, even in a thread about irrelevance and irrevereance you'll get spammed about how crappy IE is, how stupid you are and how "cool" FireFox is. I happen to agree with the original poster. I'm not sure what percentage, but it seems like the number of posts about "Who's a bigger moron" or even more annoying "I like to feed my cat cheese" are on the steady increase.

All that said, this is the general forum, and provided RicheyD is OK with the extra bandwidth sting at the end of the month, then I guess it's all mostly harmless. As soon as you start telling people to stop posting what they feel like they get all patriotic and say "Hey I can post what I like, this is a free country blah blah blah"

I thought you were banned because you spammed? Megaton may be a bit arguementetive at the moment but I assure you its just his age. At least he doesn't go around making billions of useless threads unlike some people.

Or there could be a mock-bot.

Like when you start a new thread, it passes it through a search and tells you:

''There's already 12,325 threads with those words in the title, please press the back button to confirm''

Quote: "Sadly, the mods COULD do a better job. "

I have no doubt that I, and perhaps others, could do a better job. Bear in mind that we all do our best with the time we can spare for the forum, we're not paid for this, and it's not really fun trying to find the right spot between harsh and lax enforcement of rules. There will always be room for improvement.

Quote: "All MODs get paid if we are bad fourm posters. If we aren't they don't get money. So naturally, to Milk Lee for all his worth, they must let us slaughter each other then come in and "collect their paycheck""

And it gets especially tough with ahem certain people ahem who appear to have absolutely no sense of humor, take themselves completely seriously and throw temper tantrums if one in their thousands of useless threads gets locked.

There are also some people who have offbeat senses of humor and tend to be very sarcastic (Megaton, Benjamin, Jimmy, sometimes Exeat & I...)... really it's not meant in a mean way. Different people find different things amusing. If you don't know whether someone is trying to offend you or not, give them the benefit of the doubt

Also keep in mind that this is a forum with a very low average age compared to some (not many - game forums tend to be clogged with 12 year olds for some reason), due to the relatively ow target age of DB, DBP and FPSC. Most people on the forum are in the 12-18 age range. So it's naturally not going to be really mature most of the time .

(Ahem)

Seriously, I agree with what Ian T said -
Quote: "people who have offbeat senses of humor and tend to be very sarcastic (Megaton, Benjamin, Jimmy, sometimes Exeat & I...)... really it's not meant in a mean way."

And I have had my fair share of, quite frankly, very weird posts from Jimmy, but hopefully they aren't insulting. (just plain
weird!)

Just read through the whole thing, lots of interesting and true points have been said, well done to those who made them.

answerign the original question, i ask, what do you want?

if mods do their jobs, people complain about how power hungry they are and how they lock on a whim.

if they dont then people say they're lazy and dont do their jobs properly. they're just like social workers, damned if they do, and damned if they dont.

I think to solve our search and sticky problem, Rich needs to add a little test to all new members and the ones who get slapped (for good measure). He needs to come up with say 20 passwords that you have to enter in order to make you first post when joining the forum or getting slapped. How this is going to help is ... you have to read the stickys to get the first 10 passwords and you have to use the search feature to find the other 10. And to make it so they don't cheat and just google for the passwords or skim through the stickys, he needs to sort of encrypt them in an easy to figure out kind of way so you have to read at least the first post entirely as it is usually the most important anyway. This encryption will also help weed out those who have no earthly bussiness programming in the first place.

Wow. What an evocative and controversial thread. I really have no idea what to say about this except that the mods can pwn y00z any day. In the end we're all just a bunch of self-righteous wainerholes trying to get our teenage exaspiration out into the world wide web via a community of like-minded individuals, and if the site were to suddenly explode in a giant flaming ball of fiber optics most of us would lose very large chunk of our lives and would either go into deep depression or have a lot more free time on our hands.

Wow...no periods. My excuse is that it manipulates your psyche so that your subconscious won't let you stop reading until you hit a period. There's a comma in there for you, and it is a single sentence--just a very large one.
