If you're doing this in photoshop, you need to have separate layers for the text and background. Delete the background layer and save it as a GIF, or PNG. I can't seem to get PNGs to work (I think cos I have photoshop light version), but using export for web seems to work for GIFs. Also that way you get more choice about the export settings.
