I was just browsin Slashdot and found this link.
It's a keyboard where every individual key will actually be it's own display, probably using OLED. Therefore you make your own mappings for individual programs and actually change the symbol or image on the key. Mmmmmm...

Yep, I'm just imagining the usefulness for Photoshop and just any type of editor in general. In Photoshop? Your keyboard graphics switch to photoshop functions, in VB? Your keyboard function keys remap and re-graphic, playing an RTS? Your keyboard re-maps automatically to the setup for that game, leaving blank keys for keys that don't do anything. A game could ship with it's own custom keyboard layout, so the first time you start it up you're greeted with fresh custom keyboard key. AHHH, the possibilities are endless. The only problem right now is that the price will be above $200.

I'll still buy one

Looks damn sweet but I'm concearned about the price - I mean saying it 'will cost less than a good mobile phone' is no good, and there's no way I'd spend more than £50 on any keyboard, so it looks out of my league.

Maybe things will be different when it's released, like by then display technology will be even cheaper than it is now which could bring the price down.

Cool, would like one of those. Would be nice if they change when you hold down shift, ctrl, alt etc. No more remembering hotkeys

Yeah this is a few days old now - personally i'll be amazed if we ever see it. It's just a bunch of nice renders.

Were that to ever get made I would write an app to assign random pretty pictures to buttons and change input configurations really fast and make a cool little keyboard light show.

That would be sweet if it was real. Sadly the images don't quite look real enough for my liking.

its a cool concept, but it will mean we will have to make keyboard icons for each aspect of our game

imagine breaking a key and having to spend $20 for the letter "X" replacement .

I would like that for certain programs where im a keyboard shortcut cowboy.

the other concept i thought of looking at this is animated keyboard icons similar to a screen saver, but animated over the keyboard. sweet! but hardly practical.

im guessing that the key's do change when u push shift going by the pictures that say english lower case, russian uppercase and such. so that means no more hotkeys xtom.

Well there wouldn't be a specific 'X' key, they'd all be the same.

Looks cool but what happens when you get:

Keyboard Burn In

A screen saver for your keyboard?

It would probably turn the keys off after 10 minutes of no use or something.

If such a thing were affordable (or feasible at this time), I would get one.

It may be expensive if it comes out but it might be the future for keyboards, meaning they might be common place in 5 or 10yrs time and cost <100. Yeah keyboard screensavers would be cool too, the keys could light in different ways making animations or act like an equalizer when playing music or simply turn off. Seems like it could offer a lot over current keyboards. Just needs dell or some pc manufacturers to make it mainstream with their bundles and bring the cost down.

It could mean the future of keyboards though. Has anyone seen the super flexible digital paper that Fujitsu came up with?

Actually what would usefull for something like certain programs would be something like this, only not an actual keyboard(more like a keypad).

lol! Until someone gets the idea of mimicing the original, and smacking the keyboard with a mallet

Looks like an interesting idea... Would be good to have a keyboard like that.
I've always wanted a keyboard that I can switch between DVorak and QWERTY without the hastle of re-labling my keys

And the idea that each key is it's own little display is just awesome!

That is so tops. In theory, if it updated fast enough, you could have a game on the keyboard. I mean like a full on Quake FPS effort or somesuch. Tops. Erm, or just get a tablet PC. Heh...

Also, have you seen the virtual laser keyboard? Basically looks like a little ciggie lighter that you plug into a device (made for PDAs), and it projects a keyboard onto the table in front of it in red laser light type effect! And it detects which keys you are "typing" on. How tops is that?

Aha, found it:-
http://www.virtual-laser-keyboard.com/ It's actually for sale now. Can get for around £80. Not bad. And is amazingly cute. Reviews say the only downside is it is weird not feeling the keys, but works amazingly well. And is bluetooth. Double tops.

Cheers

I am 99% probably lying in bed right now... so don't blame me for crappy typing

The technology is here, and has been here for a long time, they are just doing it the stupid way.

The SMART way:
Get a lcd, get presurepads. Make a touchscreen. Get transparent "keys". Tada, and much cheaper too.

Quote: "Keyboard Burn In"

I am pretty sure that won't happen. Burn ins were originally caused because of the Cathoray tubes being concentrated on 1 area for too long. We now have like plasma burn ins (so some people say) but as long as you aren't useing something that creates enough heat to dammage the display material, nothing should happen.

Quote: " How tops is that?"

No tops... unless you are mr, where is the u, where is the I. that keyboard is useless. Typeing can be much faster if you can feel the keys and stuff. It is like playing the piano off of a peice of paper that is colored to look like one, you can't tell what you are pressing.

and what is with bluetooth? let's plug into the wireless network port.

i wouldnt like to be using an X key for a spacebar key sized area.
there would be differences to key sizes across the board.
