Work done so far - lots still to do, so many buttons not yet working.

To edit values:

1. Click on them. (Integers turn green, real numbers turn red).

2. Use the backspace then enter the required value.

3. Press ENTER. If correctly entered, the value will change back to white.

Feel free to download, play and comment...

http://www.computechtenerife.com/particlegen.rar (800K).

Quick Screenshot:

When finished, you will be able to create your effects and save as DB Classic source code to import into your own programs!

I must say though it took me w hile to notice that I was typing something when I had to change one of the values, a cursor to be flashing infront of the text... (though I think its cos I'm lacking intelectuality)
Also, the color picking wasn't too good (it wasn't bad though), I though it would be better to click on the color pallette and be able to move the mouse around till you find a good color then let go the mouse button when your done... and I think there should be an option to save the colors, not just do it automatically..

otherwise really good I like it

P.S. sorry if I sounded a bit rash about all my comments

EDIT: I also think its great to see something like this that's for DBC, everything just seems to be done for pro nowadays.

Version 1.1 just posted (800K).

http://www.computechtenerife.com/particlegen.rar

Lots of camera tweaks and misc fixes.

Zotoaster:

Agree about the colour picker, so it's now been improved!

I've also added the code behind a couple more presets - I particularly like the Waterfall - even if I do say so myself...

I've thought of another preset not on the list and I'm considering moving the Start, Stop and Single Shot buttons across to next to the Exit button to make room for more.

Can anyone think of any others to add if I do make room?

Also, I need a favour...

Created any good effects?

Take a look at any of the existing presets that work. If you can improve on any of them by tweaking the settings, or can create your own - either on the preset list or not, you can now save the settings to a '.PRE' text file!

Press 'S' to save the current data and type in the required name (without the '.PRE' on the end). The particle name box is used for this.

When you have entered the file name, press Enter. Use a suitably descriptive name as it might be added as a Preset!

This will create a .PRE text file in the Particles folder which you can open with notepad and copy/paste here in this thread.

If it's good, I will use/add it as a preset and credit you in the finished program. Any of the presets are open to improvement.

Thanks...

Here's one I made of a Nebula...

Really really great job so far
If I ever need particle effects I'm gonna use this 'cause its really easy to use and I like it, though I wish you could use more than one color..

P.S. Perhaps you could make it that if the mouse is near the edge of the screen then the camera turns, these buttons which control the camera just don't feel right... I think they'd be better if they were a little more sensitive..

P.P.S. Is it too much to ask to change the buttons when you click on them? otherwise nvm

When finished it will have the same camera control system as MatEdit (cos I liked how that worked). Not done it yet as I thought it was more important to allow people to play with the particles first - rather than the camera.

You will be able to use up to three eventually. Sit tight!

Yes, that's on my list, but quite a way down it!

Shame DB hasn't got any AND/OR/XOR capabilities when pasting images. Life would be a lot easier!...

yeah i agree...

I think for when you click on the buttons you should just make an putline to the button, pretty simple but better than nothing..

V1.2 just posted - with the new active button feature.

I've also started to add the multi-colour/multi-emitter options and the directions buttons are now sort of semi-working.

Feel free to d/l and have a play from http://www.computechtenerife.com/particlegen.rar as it's the last download I will be posting until it's finished, (assuming anyone wants it that is).

I got multiple emitters and multiple colours working!

This shot shows using 3 particle emitters using red, green and blue particles.

Each emitter has independant particle images, colours and applied values - including gravity.

Here's my version of a volcano eruption...

Good point! I'll add that now...

BatVink:

I'm not someone who usually bothers about frame rates, so to be honest I've not even checked. I'll take a look and see.

OK, added a new switch to kill the particles if they drop below floor level and it works fine.

I've also maxed out the number of particles and the lowest FPS I get is 28:

Out of interest, what size of image do you use for your particles? It's something I've been meaning to experiment with, but never had the time.

I'm just wondering if it's faster to have an oversized or undersized image for speed. Quality will obviously suffer with samller images, but it's quite possible speed is also suffering!

So far I've only used 64x64 sized textures, so I don't know what difference bigger textures would make.

I would expect it to have some detrimental effect on the frame rate though...

Not far off finishing the program off now!

Just uploaded V1.3 and the official beta release should be ready in the next day or so. I can then write the DBC #Include files while whoever is interested in it has a play...

http://www.computechtenerife.com/particlegen.rar

I've redone all the presets and if I get time I'll knock together a couple of DBC demos showing some of the presets in use.

Comments welcome...

Excellent excellent excellent! The other system that was available just seemed less friendly than this. How opportune that you bring this out right as I start working on another DBC game! Awesome stuff.

Version 1.4 just uploaded.

http://www.computechtenerife.com/particlegen.rar (820K)

Now has no preset buttons - replaced with a pop-up listbox of presets, so the old max number of 8 presets has gone.

You can now load any particle effects you save as they will appear on the list. Just click on the save button when you have a nice effect and give it a name (no extension).

When you next open the list of presets it will be at the bottom (you may have to scroll down the list).

Also added a very nice clouds effect and done a bit more tweaking.

By all means play, but please don't use it seriously as I may yet change the parameters for the program and if I do, any presets you create may not work in any new version.

Actually, is anyone interested in this program or has everyone switched to DB Pro now?

Downloading now!

I got one of the earlier versions before, so I can tell that this is much better! Amazing!

Great app TDK. it's really easy to use and i can't wait for the final version. I've only got one problem: how do i load the presets i make into dbc? I have tried looking in the help file and opening the file with DB but i just get a lot of numbers with no indication of what they control. Is it just a feature that is not done for this version and will appear in the finished app or am i just missing something obvious?

greg man:

You are right - it's not done yet. I'm going to write a couple of demos using the effects created and the #include functions will be created in the process.

I can't do that until the program is fully finished or I will have to keep altering the include files.

Hoping to finish the program this weekend.

Has anyone found anything obvious missing in the program?

It's perfect - If only I had some way of running particles in my own programs like that, I...would.

Btw, if you haven't got too many beta testers already (and you don't hate me too much), I'd love to help test this program.

(For once, I've kept the 'Email' and 'MSN' buttons on the bottom of this post accurate.)

[Insert extremely witty comment here] :: Add me to MSN if you like, but don't expect any big favours [unless you like VB6]. ... IDK!!

I've been working on both the generator and the new IDE, but it's hard going...

The bit that was missing from the generator was the ability to rotate the emitters 360 degrees with the particles spraying out in the correct direction.

I've not seen it done before in DB Classic.

But, take a look!

http://www.computechtenerife.com/rotate.rar

Just got to get it working in the generator and make it work with all the emitters. Then find a way to export the data to work with another function so you can use it in your programs...

And to TDK: Yet another amazing DBC program. This'll probably take it's place with VanSEAM and the rest of my DB resource programs. Us DBC'ers have waited for something like this for a long time

I have looked everywhere, and there is not 1 completely finished particle program for DBC that can export the particle code.

So that's why I'm hoping that you will finish this.
