Quite an interesting topic, one that has been argued numerous times. A truth is, how can any one person be assured that he knows? Can you honestly say to yourself(speaking to a person on either side of this discussion) that you have all evidence supporting your argument? Many can bring about many great arguments, some even converting others to their "faith". However, from all the statements above, I see that we all know that we do not have the knowledge(and no human does) to say that either side of the discussion is true.

Knowing this, be neutral in the discussion. The day you find or hear about life on another planet, say you know there is life elsewhere. Or, the day you know that you know that you know all there is to know, and you have not known other life, then say that there is no life.

I speak that you should be neutral in this disussion, because you have no way of proving or fully supporting your theories. You do not have the evidence. As for the beginning of time or our galaxy, and others, you do not know how they began, or what brought us to this point. You do not know much at all(I am speaking to all of us), as compared to all knowledge and all knowing.

This topic is excellent. But, it would be more productive and fun if no one took to themselves a "truth". The discussion is great, but do not say that you 'know for a fact'.

Not too familiar with Heisenberg eh?

There are things that can't be known no matter how hard you try. Like the position of an electron at any point in time. Then there is the the three body problem. (the inability to find an equation of motion for three obiting bodies) we can only approximate. Its chaos out there man, You can predict the future sure. just don't expect your horse to always come first.

As for the aliens. Prepare yourself by standing in front of a mirror, holding up your right hand palm outward, split your fingers between the middle and ring finger (thats it) and repeat "Live long and prosper"

Something really catchy that makes people stop and think about the meaning of life and say to themselves "My but thats clever"

About SETI:

I don't really like people that run SETI. Every show that i've seen about UFOs they always talk to SETI people. They do not believe that anybody has ever been abducted or have even seen UFO's... why?... because they believe that if aliens where actually here they would of been contated first.

About Life on other planets:

Actually there is life on other planets already. Every probe we send to another planet has Earth microbes all over it. No matter how "clean" we think the probe is we infect other planets with our most primitive life forms (yes they actually survive the vaccume of space).

Life on other planets? YES
Intelligent Life On Planets? Very Probable, but not within our solar system
How advanced? Well there IS life on other planets already as stated by Grog, that are just barely "life" and is not advanced at all. Then we see normal humans which are billions of years more advanced than these different "microbes", so you would have to expect alien cultures somewhere within the universe to be "billions" of years ahead of us. With all the space out there, it is hard to believe that humans are the most intelligent and advance life forms. It is EXTREMELY hard to believe all life comes from earth.

So yes, I believe there to be alien cultures within the universe and believe there to be a very good chance of aliens that are more advanced than humans even.

But of course, I will probably never find out what does and does not exist in my lifetime.

Yeah and the first child to be born in a colony on mars will be a Martian. But thats not what is being discussed. Original life we're talking about. Not life that has been transfered naturally or otherwise. (Although 'we' could have arrived on a comet...But imagine the odds of that happening...)

Anyway, I could argue this till I was Blue in the face. And people would still not agree with me. The statement was "We will NEVER FIND life on other planets".

If we don't find life on another planet or moon in our solar system - we will never FIND any life, for sure.

I like pessimists, they like to think that the world will end.

Although 'we' could have arrived on a comet...But imagine the odds of that happening... 1 in a 1000. Pretty good odds huh?

Lets see... if we look over at mars... LOOK AT MARS... thank you, you will see that it is a crator rikkend planet... Now there is a VERY high chance of a object striking a planet... just look at it from propper time, not common time. every 1000 years. Why 1000 years? Lets see, can we really measure things in single years if they take place over the course of millions of years?

And microorganisms are NOT transphered from planet to planet by us... they exist on many planets... if you would read a little you would have heard that scientists have "found" microganisms living in the atmosphere of Venus.

I personally think that we will never grow past our need to destory things, so I have corrected the Star Trek motto...

Space, the final frontier, these are the voyages of the Warship Enterprise, its contining mission, explore strange new worlds, seek out new life and new civilizations, (destroy all that they hold dear and call them inferior if they don't kill each other. Then NUKE the hell out of them and steal their resources.) and boldly go where no man (should ) have gone before!

Okay... I am pessimist against the human race. Is that really so bad? I mean take a look at our choice of entertainment... it doesn't matter that it is not real, but the fact that we still seek it.

We will find life, we have found life, and then we will disscover that water is NOT a key to life.

I did several searches on the internet and i've only found web pages that used the words "could" and "maybe" next to "microorganisms living in the atmosphere of Venus". Can you post a link to an article about scientists actually proveing microbes are on Venus? I'd really like to see it.

Umm, humans only use 10% of their brain at once. Portians of the brain are used for different things, such as balance and breathing and heart beat and seeing, etc. If we used 100% of our brain then we'd be.. really weird. Like jimmy.

how can you say theyve found some in venus? did they send some satelite that went into the atmosphere, then fly off the surface again because this satelite has engines, and then flew it back and found organisms on it? i highly doubt it.

@lynx jimmys actually using 200% of his brain as hes got a physopth and a womans brain sewn together.

Scince we have only mapped 4% of OUR universe, I wouldnt go yelling about the fact that there arnt any other, even non inteligent, life forms out there. And then theres the theory on more universes.

Even thought we may never find them, there is life out there. If you want my full, long and (somewhat) borring speach on it, I'll upload an MP3 to my personal site tomarrow.

You mean the one from Mars that landed in Antarctica. That happened about 13,000 years ago. It's been totally exposed to Earth life the whole time. Right now only a handful of scientists believe those small cigar shaped things are fossils. If they really are proven to be fossils?... they came from Earth... not Mars. The only way to prove former life on Mars is looking at Mars rocks that haven't been contaminated by the Earth for 13,000 years.

Not to bash, but how might one prove, on a scale, how much of the universe we have explored? Even now, there are still theories as to haow large it might be, or if there is more than just one.

To all speaking about life on other planets,

How can you rock solidly believe that there is no other life out there, if there is no solid proof of your theory? This is like believing in a god you have never seen or felt, or touched, or heard, in that even you have some doubt of what expels from your mouth and mind. However, truly, we all have some doubt in what we say, beit we believe in other life, we don't, or we are not sure.

I don't believe that they actually "found" life. But there is a positive effort that MAY find life, eventaully.

And the Astroid doesn't have bacteria on it, it has FOSSILIZED bacteria that occured (correct me if I am wrong) durring re-entry... But then again, a peice of dust might look like bateria to a person who wants it to be.

Oh sorry. I didn't know you considered quotes like that. I consider using caps as sarcasm/shouting. I'll tone down the quoting. I generally only quote when I post code that's not in code snips.

Ah ok. It would be interesting if they actually did. I'm sure if scientists keep looking they'll eventually find life of some kind off this planet.

Yeah that's the debate right now. Some scientist believe the are fossils... most don't. That's why most don't believe because they really can't prove that it's a fossil... it's more of a faith thing.

I do believe there is life out there somewhere.

Well that was quite entertaining to read. You have shown not a single ounce of factual information to support your statement. The earth, its rotation and atmosphere, the sun and our galaxy. About the only thing those statements suggested was that they exist, which we already know. Those have nothing to do with life in the universe.

Ok, what about it? Matter of some form is limitless in this universe. The universe is infinte and can never be fully explored. Scientists have already found other planets that orbit a sun like our own galaxy.

Have you heard of adaptation? Another planet does not have to be exactly like ours to support life. Developing life will accomodate the features of its environment. But there have been planets that more closely resemble earth than even Mars. And wasn't a meteorite found with microbes? Wouldn't that be extraterrestial life?

If you're going to make such an obsured statement that sounds like a tabloid, gather some real facts and explain them.
