I have an issue with my internet speed. I am on 1Mbps (AOL) and i have a D-Link DSL-G604T Router. When i download a file it should download at 135kps. as this is the sppen my brother gets on his pc. However when i download on my pc the speed steadily declines untill i get 85kps. and nothing else is running. please can someone help me.

* have you done a spyware/adware/virus scan?
* When you say your brother gets that speed - is he on the same network?
* If he is on a different network, does every device connected to your phone line have a microfilter on it?
* If he in on the same network, are you using different software?
* After you using wireless or wired connection to the router?
* are you doing this test at the same time of day (AOL may have oversubscribed your exchange)
* If they're different connections and you are still getting slow speeds and you've done a complete scan for viruses and spyware (I recomend [href=www.freeav.com]AntiVir[/href] and SpyBot/Adaware.. All free)

Any help?

My bro uses the same router. he downloaded from the same site 5 mins after me (we did a test) I have just formatted my pc. so no spyware.

well i'm on the same thing except for the router type i use belkin

if you're on wireless it's probably why..
you should try turning your computer round or somet...
i turned mine 10 degreess to the left and i halve the download speed really positioning is critical...

Yeah - Wireless is fun like that. I found tilting the arial took my signal from 12Mbps to 36Mbps! I never get 54.. Which is why I went back to cable

Just because you've reinstalled doesn't mean you dont have spyware.. Windows isn't the most secure thing in the world!

Do you have wireless or wired? If its wired, it might be a faulty wire?

BigAdd, it could be the fault of the server, not of your pc. If the server was experiencing heavy loads at the time, speeds are going to be lower.

I'm not on wireless. i just dunno what it is. its always been doing this. Maybe it my network card.

For virus scanning I'd recommend AVG(Still free).

p.s. Don't use Norton AV it's a resource hog.

You also might try this site:

It has tons XP/3D optimizations. (I'd recommend reading and following the XP Guide, but also look at the next site for a bit more.

Check out step 8. This will help you and your brother both.

Also, on a 1Mbit conection you max should only be either 125/128 Kbyte depending on how the 1 Mbit speed was qouted.

The number one thing I'd reccomend if get cable modem I love 5Mbit downloads most sites don't even keep up.

ADSL works by distance. The closer you are to the exchange the quicker your overall speed.

I have a 1Mb DSL right now, which will download at 120KB/S. That is the exact speed you should be expecting from that connection, if your bother gets more then good for him. Means he has a quicker than advarage connection.

Most of the downloads I start will begin around 3-400KB but gradually come down to 120KB.

The start speed of a download when listed to you by an app is bugged. The is some prefecthing(buffering) while your choosing the name and location. The amount of time you spend on that Save file as screen will appear the best way to check your connection vs your brother is to use a speed test site. Like this one:

When you look at those results the grey area (the TCP Ovehead) is what can be optimized by the step 8 section on the site I listed above.

haha, that's funny.
you know, people have run tests on Windows machines unsecured and it only took them 20minutes online before they were MASSIVLY infected.
saying that, it COULD be spyware.

I had a problem like this a while ago. I'm on 2MB and my downloads dropped to about 40k. If I checked bytes recieved section of connection status (the two little monitors on the task bar) I was getting loads of errors.
Turned out it was a faulty ASDL filter. Now I'm back to 220-240k/sec

Hardware (filters, cables, phones, routers, modems etc..) is another possible bottlemeck, but he and is brother are on the same network. So that eliminates all but the network cables, the NIC, and the router. Optimizing will help but it would help his brother as well. In the end it's probably interference of some sort. A higher quality better shielded net cable might help. You can try swapping cables and router ports with your brother and see if that changes it at all. If so then it's hardware and nothing you can do without replacement. If nothing changes it either NIC(not likely) or software(more likely) related. Make sure your using the latest drivers for your network adapter.
