Hello all,

I'm building a text based RPG at the moment which runs in a window using the SET WINDOW ON command with a SYNC RATE of 60. I've noticed that when my program is running it massively slows down other programs.

Example:
I'm testing my program for some simple stuff so I decide to have a waffle to a friend in a Java based chatroom on a website . . . the chatroom won't fire up while I've got my program running. Close the program and everything is fine. Okay, I thought, I'll try IE instead of FF, same problem. Right, I'll try MSN then, MSN runs but is chronically slow.

So, any thoughts why this would be happening? I figured that my text based program wouldn't be using shed loads of systems resources but it appears to be. Does anyone have any experience of this and is there a way of stopping the slow down outside of my program?

my only suggestion(though it probably wont solve your problem) is to set the sync rate to 0.

DBC is a memory hog, nothing much you can do about. Well unless you running Windows XP. If you are then try holding down crtl and alt and then press delete while still holding down the crtl and alt keys. The Windows Task Manager will pop up, then click the second tab "Processes". And look for "Dark Basic.exe" in the list and right click on it, then a little menu will pop up and click on "Set Priority", and then change it to like "Below Normal" and then repeat the process again for the MSN program or whatever, except look for MSN.exe or something like that and change the to "Above Normal" or "High". However, if you don't have XP then I don't know.

Underworld, you're a genius!

Your Ctrl/Alt/Delete solution worked like a charm (at least for FF and Java chat, I haven't checked MSN yet) and your weren't joking about DB being a memory hog . . . my little text based program waiting for INPUT is perpetually using between 90-95% CPU usage, no wonder I was getting slow down.

Thanks for the tip
