Who wants to give me a second opinion before I toss this 9700 PRO? Just happened recently. All catalyst drivers updated.

Try reinstalling the drivers that came with the card (not the new ones off the internet)... if it's still messed up get rid of it.

As you can plainly see the display is corrupted before the drivers for the graphics card are loaded. Either the graphics card is overheating or has been damaged by heat or maybe even condensation.

Can't really suggest much without more information, but then looking at those screenshots it really does look a bit naffed.

Anyway, have fun

Looks Knackered...

Get a cheap card for the meantime or get a new one if you can afford.

I think it's drivers but then again latest thing I've handled/messed with was an nVIDIA TNT2 32Mb...

looks like toast

ship it to me, and i'll tell you if that's correct or not

@Raven:

doesnt look like censoring to me, i think it's more of the card not displaying properly

Are you sure it's seated properly and the AGP slot is free from crud?

It's definately a hardware problem, nothing to do with drivers or anything like that - but I've seen several cards do that when not securely in the slot.

Don't throw it out, get a friend to try it in his PC for you to make sure of it's condition - but even if it's broken in half it's still worth keeping hold of - things like monitor connectors and GFX card fans don't sprout from the ground, you might need the spare parts one day. Also, if your considering overclocking your next card, then a spare fan on the memory chips can help.

memory failed imo, either that or the cards not seated properly, although normaly they just don`t run if wrongly mounted, my second 9800pro died from overheating (as did the first one), even though I fitted a way larger Artic heatsink that used up the bay below the agp slot, but it just took it longer to die.
heres an easy test for it, get a Linux live cd and boot from that, if you still get corrupted screens then it`s safe to say it`s toast since both OS and drivers will be totaly different (either that or the MOBO agp controler has problems) try a cheapo card just to make sure (you can get agp cards for £20 or so)

I know its obvious the GPU is screwed, but the icon problem looks as though Windows is applying the wrong mask to the icon, and not an actual GPU fault.

either that or it stores the icons in video ram that has a problem (like alternate banks have failed), mine started crashing at random under shader intensive use before it finaly failed (Farcry, Doom and HL2).
the ATI cards seem to run a lot hotter than the designers expected when running shaders, or at least thats how I see it since I keep getting them overheating, temporarily I have a Nvidia 6200 series card installed until I can afford another high end card, the 6200 doesnt even have a fan (just a passive heatsink), and has onboard temperature monitoring that says it never gets above halfway to the shutoff temperature, you can run Doom3, HL2 and Farcry on that well enough too as long as you keep the resolution down to 1024x768.

or you can just take it in and spend more on a person deciding what is wrong, then to buy a new one!

But atleast we will know what is wrong.

Take it out and give the card and the socket a good clean. Dirt in the socket or something slightly conductive on the board can cause weird graphical glitches like that. Also check for excess paste under the heat sink, if too much is used it can ooze out onto the board and cause problems.

looks like not all the pixel pipelines are working, my 9800se did that when i tried to unlocl the other 4 pipelines but at least one of them is screwed and i got images a bit like that.. but not quite.

never toss hardware, spares are always worth keeping. even if they don't work right, eg if in future with a newcard the screen won't come on, just staus black, try the old card, if it's still black it's not the graphics card.
