www.5gigs.com

5 gigs of bandwidth for free seems like a good deal to me, and if you want really good websites look at their commercial packages with bandwidth up to 20 gigs for a fee though

You will also require a lot of effort and a little luck.

or you can figure out how to make a php version of your site and upload it somewhere, and run off of their bandwith... jk.

5 gigs isn't that great... you only get 80mb of server space...

Also try and stay away from lycos Europe hosting. I have been with them for about a year but when it came to renewing my subscription, they fumbled my account and now i can't get into my account. They have locked my site and claim i havn't paid (even though i can proove i have). I have now had to contact trading standards and i am a week off starting legal action against them.

Glad i got that off my chest.

(assuming you have little to no knowledge of web design)

A free host is a good place to start. Most come with some sort of designer that you can just dump some stuff on a page and come up with a nice looking site. If you want to have more control over what you do, consider learning HTML, and look towards XHTML. I say XHTML because that is the standard that is going to be implemented by W3C in the next few years.

If you get a hold of that, you might have a server side language on your free hosting, try taking a few tutorials on this server side language to let you do some interesting things. It can also help take development time down for html as you can get the server side scripts to spue out the html you use the most.

I am more than happy to assist in any design or html querries you have, i help design Jessticulars first site and i help powersoft from time to time. I also do web design and programming for a living, so if you need help, just ask, it won't cost anything.

I always edit HTML by hand coding.. I cant stand code that programs produce - its often very innefficient! I also prefer to be in complete control of the code - that way, if something goes wrong I KNOW its my fault, not the fault of the program making the code

You do realize that with programs like Dreamweaver, you are always free to edit the code yourself at any given moment?

Visual Studio gives you complete control while providing a nice GUI and highlighting.

I have Dreamweaver installed on my PC at work, but dont use it. If I'm only going to use it for a text editor - its a bit beefy. I might as well use a smaller app, like UltraEdit (My favourite.. I've been using it for years. It gets installed before WinZip and just after my drivers on EVERY reinstall )

I strongly disagree with the "its hardcore" to use a text editor to design a website.

each tool serves a purpose as well as notepad, sometimes there are time constraints and dreamweaver makes things a lot quicker to develop many pages with consistency.

btw

notepad has "find replace" but its lame compared to dreamweavers code or insite text "find replace" features or bbedits find replace features as on small aspect to improving dev times with other packages.

If no-one gives your an answer to a question you have asked, consider:- Is your question clear.- Did you ask nicely.- Are you showing any effort to solve the problem yourself 

And Dreamweaver's code is NOT inefficient. In fact it's probably the most efficient HTML designer you can use.
