How can I add to an existing layer? Everytime I try to add to a layer, it creates a new layer for what I just put into the image.

I may be using a different version than you but if you hit F7 that'll bring up the layer menu. The layer that you're currently working on is highlighted blue. Selecting another layer will cause any drawing to go to that layer.
